So now that the cat is well and truly out of the bag that I am selling the 7/11, my next step is to work out what to build next. It's going to be a pure track focused bike, with a bit of a fighter influence of course. Looking for any ideas you guys may have, they can be crazy or realistic, just bring 'em on! Here's some points:

Weight - Less than 150kg full wet - I think this is easily achievable
Power - Somewhere around 100hp, with potential for more
Cost - As little as possible, I will be doing most of the work myself, have access to full sheet metal shop, lathe, mill, CNC router...

Focus will be on handling, corner speed and traction. I want serious lean angle, I have a hankering to get my elbow down before I'm too old!

So far I'm thinking it will be a twin, a triple, a V-four, or if inline-4 I will big bang it (just with cams, not crank).

Frame - Dunno, I haven't ruled out the possibility of a custom frame yet!

I like ideas like what Rapid are doing with the RS250 with the V-twin motard donk, the PB Cagiva Mito/CR500 (Actually haven't bought that mag for a while and dunno how it's going), RGV/RG500 conversions, early GSXR 600/K1 1000 conversions... Hmm just gave myself an idea about a SV650 frame with TLR 1000 donk... hmmm...

One day I may even race it, so if it conforms to any race series' going on it would be a plus, like BEARS etc.

Ok bring the ideas on guys, I'm starting to get excited again!

i think rapid are putting a parallel twin into theres arent they?

i looked at putting the TL engine into the SV frame
it would take a fair bit of aluminium welding to do...

I thought it was a Aprilia 550 V-Twin? Could be wrong...

Have seen the SV/TLR conversion in a umm PB or Streetfighters mag, doesn't matter about the Ally welding, got a TIG out the back. Can CNC up some engine mounts if need be too. Could be costly, prob $4K for the donor bike, another couple for the donk. Hard to strip off weight too...

my wish list

when doing these motor conversions you can run into handling issues. the wieght bias can go right out the window

1, rgv 250 with a tl motor or duke motor depending what fits.

2, gsxr400 with gsxr750 motor - can be done but can cause problems with handling as the motor is alot heavier.

3, turbo vfr/rvf/cbr/zxr 400 should get the hp easy enough but then problems with clutches boxes and engine life would play into it.

4, streetfightered gsxr600/r6/zxr600 would make the weight i recon specially without the fairings and gear my mates k4 600 made 112hp at the wheel and light aswell

5, fightered gsxr600 with a 1k motor as you have aleardy mentioned

6, vfr400 with a vfr800 motor

7, casey's gp8 duke. the best of all aspects.

Rapid track bike is the Aprilia v-twin 550 and should be ready soon. Ben Shaw has been helping, working his magic with the TIG welder.
I have also been running a budget R6 track bike project story.

1. Was thinking about that, and wondered if it would fit... The frame would need some serious bracing I would think?

2. Would be way cool as a big banger, love the look of the frame too... der!

3. Prefer to stick away from turbo, purely because of the lag and hitting boost coming out of a corner. A properly sized snail would go a long way to combat this, but I'll stick to NA or blower.

4. Thought about this, but I want to be a bit different.

5. Could do, but my mate already has one!

6. Now we're talking!

7. I already sold my soul when I joined the Navy... Funnily enough I heard a desmosedici RR the other day when I was in Melb, I thought wow that's a hell tough sounding Viffer, turned around and there it was in all it's glory... The rider gave me some blips, and a boner not long after.

I get what you're saying about the weight thing, and yeah I'm going to be real careful about it. Not sure if I can overcome some of those issues with suspension geomerty and seat placement?

Get a 400 sports bike and leave it standard, you will only fuck up its handling by putting a big heavy motor in a light bike. Anything else is going to be way over 150kg wet, even the latest lightweight 600 supersports.

vfr400 with a vfr800 motor fuck yeah!

No offense mate, but you've completely missed my point. I can't believe you even mentioned the word standard in this thread. No more comments from you please.

Haha I thought you said you wanted to go fast ;) I have had my ass kicked out there by 'standard' 125cc's.

I reckon this bike is going to be as much about an engineering exercise as it is about riding the thing. One thing I have discovered is love building them as much as I love riding them, or was that love riding something I have built? I dunno! My mate too has a 1000RR so I guess it wouldn't be a bad thing if I was to tear him up at the track... :p

Have you thought of the fzr400/600 conversion very popular with the track day junkies, combined with some usd and r6 swinger, they are an absolute weapon. Lots of info out their on the interweb if you look hard enough. And they are light.

Would prefer to stick away from the inline 4 if possible, oh and Yamaha aswell [:p]

Does anyone know if a SV650 donk will fit in a RGV frame? They're both V-twins, fabricating engine mounts/modifying tank are no problems...

I remember seeing an rgv with a rg500 motor in rapid bikes a while ago, looked bloody good too.a bloke I know built an rgv with an it490 motor and raced it in the pcra but didn`t persist and sold it.my mate runs a rd350b with a dt400 motor, borani rims and last ride day at wakefield it wheelstood nearly the full length of the straight before lunching the gearbox.this thing would definately meet your weight requirements and is affordable.just a few ideas for ya mate.
