Front wheel ZX9 Removal.

I bit the bullet and decided to have a crack at the steering head bearings on the 9. pulled everything off, except the bars and front wheel. (the calipers are just hanging)

where the heck can I find an allen key head/hex type doo hickey to get the damn axle off!? I can only find up to 12mm at our local shops.

Do I have to undo the bottom yolk clamp bolts, once the bars are off (which I'm tackling next - got the shits with it atm)
or when I undo the top yolk will the bottom just come out allright with the forks.
If anyone can offer me some advice in that area that would be good the fucking book just gives me a headache. tells you to "see **** chapter" reading hurt brain...
I dont know what I'm doing never done this before.

I'll be fucked if I'm paying someone 200+ to do it for me. I havnt been to work for weeks. I dont get paid till next wed either. but its just getting so freakin dangerous the way its handling at the moment, its like I'm drunk at low speeds, and riding a jackhammer when I try to stop. (rotors are next on the list)

I really dont want to put the nose back on the heavy heap of shit!! wish I had me some goodies to put on instead

you need to go to total tools or some specialist place for your monster allen key

got mine from there
Otherwise MCA or other bike shops sell adaptors for get em off

but i like my giant allen key

Thanks mate I might have to hit moss st in the morning and see how I go, or something around that way. I thought it would be something the local tractor fixerupperers would have but no.

Go to your local hardware and grab a bolt with the same size head as the hole. Then you grab the thread with your vise grips and there's your special tool.

I tried that already (welded a rig up) but me in my infinite retardedness was trying to undo the smaller hex NUT or whatever it is on the left side of the bike. Not the right, which I'm assuming will be much easier?
Now I have to wait till tomoro , but no work again so I can afford to be this stupid for another day.

I'm just a bit worried I'll fuck something when I go to finally take the forks off. out.. I'v done plenty of different bearings of sorts to know not to go at em with a sledge hammer. should I be making marks on the forks when I go to take the yolks off?

Marks as in dents from where you get frustrated and belted the living fuck outta it with something heavy

or marks as in where the yolks clamped on the forks?

Or take your bolt and a beer or four and ask your friendly mechanic to bend your bolt into a nice Tbar tool.

Nice, I made a 2 in one tool for my ZXR750.

Old wheel nut fit the larger right hand side (22mm) and a bolt to fit the other side (18mm). Press one into the other with a bench vice, then apply a nice thick bead of weld all the way around.
Perfect!

Make sure you loosen the 2 small (5mm) allen bolts that face forwards on each side, that sort of clamp the forks onto the axle. then it should be rather easy.

Cunt of a job isn't it? Total Tools quoted me some stupid amount for a suitable hex key, but dodgy bros ingenuity prevailed: I got a thick hexagonal chisel, stuck it in the socket (yes it's the right hand side) then hammered in a flat blade screwdriver beside it and got a spanner on the chisel. Job done.

The above solutions are technically much better but this one gets me through the job every time I want my 9R front wheel off. Good luck!

Next challenge: how to remove the clutch from a Honda CBR250RR without the $200 tool.... :D

yeah, as in pen marks where the yolks clamp onto the forks. so I'm not nose diving I guess when I go to put the things back together haha - trust me I learned to hit anything OTHER than whats already draining my wallet. when I chuck the shits it always costs me more

This is the biggest job I'v attempted on a bike. All the other stuff is pretty straight forward Im just paranoid about stuffing something and costing myself a fortune.. or my safety. So I'm in dumbass mode and askin the stupid questions I was trying to avoid[V]

I'm amazed you went to the trouble of dissasembly of the front end at all.
Didn't you say you were going to replace the head stem bearings?
Remove top clamp, handlebars,and isolate the brake lever, speedo cable? from the rest of the bike. Jack the bike for a foot or so clearance under the front wheel, undo the top locknut and main bearing nut, and slide the whole front end out of the head stem, replace bearings.[much bashing and swearing getting the bottom bearing off the stem, just fuckin smash/crack it with a cold chisel, you're going to replace it anyway], slide on new bearing, and reinstall front end.Sure , there is bound to be some bastard bit in the way, but it is nothin to be worried about.
Easy for me to say, I've already done mine........

Yep, its all out. I had no idea how simple it would actually be !
I'm just trying to get this fucking bottom bearing off. reminds me of the wheel bearing on the stub on my LJ that was actually rusted slightly, so the bearing couldnt slide off over it. had rip into it with the emery tape.

Everything else was a peice of piss. I'll be glad I took the front wheel off cause I dont have anyone to help lift it up as I slide it back in.
Looks like I didn't have to be so paranoid after all.
Bike shop lent me the little socket to get the axle off and I'm picking one up tomoro. Probably worth it cause its nice and small and fits in the toolbox.

Jesus I wish I could leave this big gay front end bunch of plastic shit off it.

The old bearings were fucked and had next to no grease in them. just slimy dirt.
