Ha Ha, thanks lads, but there are a lot more blokes on here with far more talent than me, theres the German guy Surt that put a Honda Civic engine in a bike then made a turbo and stuck it on its nose, now that guy has talent! He's nuts, but talented.

Anyway, last night I was chating with my mate Dave about my paint job and he has agreed to do it for me. This guy is the business and I'm luckey to get him to find time to do my bike for me.

I revisited my seat and decided to go over it again to get it as good as I could to save Dave as much of his time as I could. I knocked it back with 120 grit first, then went over the whole thing with filler again, then sanded it back with a sanding block that rode over the high spots and flattened them down to the low areas to get them level.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01067-20110901-2017.jpg

The seat base is level, not that it matters to much as its going to have foam on it.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01068-20110901-2017.jpg

Then I took it in the house and flattened it off with 400 wet and dry under the running tap.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01069-20110901-2020.jpg

Poppet wasnt to happy about doing it in the sink, and I had to sign a sworn statement I wouldnt leave a speck of dirt on the sink, counter tops, floor, well you know the score, I'm sure you get the same stuff where ever you are.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01070-20110901-2026.jpg

I think its not a million miles away now, so Dave should be able to crack on. Mind you, saying that he'll take one look at it and start again. Oh well I tried.

Well I got my frame back from powdercoat, but unfortunatly I hurt my back and have spent the last three days flat on my back. Today enough was enough and no matter what I was getting off my back and if need be crawl my arse down to the shed.

My son Nick placed the frame over the enging for me, and I told him what bolts went where. I'll go round and tighten everything up when I feel a bit better, but for now my best buddy has made an awesome job for me.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01086-20110910-1730.jpg

I thought the powdercoating Impact coatings did was flawless and I couldnt have been more pleased with the frame.

The Ducati fan sits in there really nice

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01085-20110910-1730.jpg

Future builds, I wouldnt even consider painting the frame.
The told me after it was blasted, they zink coated it before powdercoat.

He's a great bloke mate and always ready to help his old fella, but hes more into xbox mate.

I attached the wiring loom this afternoon, it wasnt a big deal because I marked everything up when I reconditioned it

I guess the only bit that took a bit of thought was wiring the stator generator, but even that was a doddle because it came with a drawing

I've found over the years that if someone is good at what they do, give them a design brief and let them have creative freedom to run with it, and 9 times out of 10 what they come up with will be far better than what you first thought of, and blow you away. Having seen Davs work before I'm sure he's come up with the goods.

Lol, all I get from my mates is "But a CX500, WHY???"

I hope when its done they might understand. Its not just about balls out in a straight line its about having some fun around the twisty bits, but more than that, most of the fighters including mine are a money pit. I paid £2,300.00 for my blade and spent about the same again on it.

The CX500 cost me £400.00 and I think its going to come in at under £1,000.00. My point is, if you drool over Streetfighters mag every month and think you'll never be able to afford something like the bikes that grace the pages of the bible, then think again, with a few quid/bucks in your pocket, and a little vision the custom bike world is open to anyone and everyone.

When my CX is done I think by swaping the bars for flat or renthalls and changing the headlight it could go from cafe racer to cafe fighter, so dont be put off by the retro thing.

But I've got 4 kids is no longer an excuse not to live YOU'RE dreams, cut a few lawns and scrape together a few bucks, then get youreself a Magot and make it happen.

:D

When I brought the CX it came with a really nasty front break set up. The res is a big boxy thing thats attached to the lever and doesnt leav much to make it look anything better than what it is.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01117-20110913-1352.jpg

I like the set up on my 96 blade because the res can be changed for a nice ally job, so I got this one off ebay.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01118-20110913-1353.jpg

I'll start cleaning and polishing the switch gear next.

CBRRRT

I took a look at my switch gear that came with the CX and to be honest it was a bit on the sorry side. Its ally, I hate polishing ally, so I got my dremel out and started the mind crushing job of flatening it off.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01120-20110913-1750.jpg

Even though its a bit grim in there I like to take reference photos because I just know I'll forget how it goes back together.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01121-20110913-1800.jpg

Once I got all the old paint off I flattened it with 120 grit paper

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01122-20110913-1900.jpg

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01123-20110913-1914.jpg

Then went down to 600 wet and dry

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01124-20110913-1932.jpg

And lastly solvo autosol

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01125-20110913-1932.jpg

It will look better when the grips and bar ends I have on order are on but for now I'm happy with the results.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01127-20110913-2117.jpg

The other side will get the treatment tomorrow. The lever was a bit loose, up and down so I used a really thin washer just to shim it and it works fine now.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01129-20110913-2145.jpg

I was a bit worried about the bars and levers etc. but I'm a lot happier now and think they are going to be fine, and wont let down the rest of the bike.

Thanks Rod, some of them help me remember how stuff went before I pulled it apart and some are to get the message over that sometimes things are not as hard to do as you may think, and hopfully inspire newcomers to our awesome world of modification to have a go. My thoughts are if a newby can do a simple little job and get it to look good, it might give them the nudge they need to push themselves a bit further. Thats exactly what I did, and I'm learning new stuff every day.

Well, I spent most of the day just looking at my new paint job by Dave at www.trackbike-repairs.co.uk
(http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12308&whichpage=8)

But today its back down to earth, throtle and choke cables went on.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01178-20110918-1224.jpg

Got them all buttoned up the relised something was wrong, to open the throtle it had to be rolled forward. I just had to swap the cables round on the carbs and all was good.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01177-20110918-1224.jpg

Now I've been putting off doing the wheels for a while because it means more aluminium polishing, and I would rather push hot needels up my finger nails than sit down and polish ally. But it cant be put off any longer because I need the bike up on its wheels the mount the exhaust.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/Cafe%20Racer%20%20CX500/IMG01179-20110918-1225.jpg

I made a jig to refinish my Blade front wheel a while back, so I'll use it again to support the wheels while I rub them down and polish the rims.

Get yourself a really big tub of hand cleaner mate, because if its anything like this CX was its covered in oil and dirt, and you are gonna get very grubby for the first few weeks, lol.

I took mine apart and labeled everything, then stuck everything in a box, as I cleaned restored and painted a part I put them in a safe place. As time goes on the to do box get smaller and the done parts get bigger. Soon you'll get to a point where you are just bolting on clean and new parts, and you stop getting dirty.

Thats when you know youre getting somewhere.

I will mate. Are you looking for any particular foam and how big do you want it?

Jewson is a company that sells construction materials, and the roll is sticky plastic to protect flooring.

just a little tip with the taping up for things like that cap. buy the best quality tape you can, and you will get less of those little bleeds.

nice work on the wheels

hey, with the bolts
i'd be a bit worried about getting cracking under the tapered heads
think it would work better with a buttonhead capscrew, shape the underside of the seat a tad to suit

got to love those lasertecs
cutting edge (in the 80s LOL)

Looks good matey but everyone I've spoken to says you should paint the headers first before you wrap them or else they will rust out in no time. Apparently the wrap holds moisture in and that's not good.

Now that I didnt know mate. I'm gonna have to make sure I run the bike for a few minutes when I clean it, not that it will ever get really dirty, ha ha. Thanks for the heads up mate.

Thanks mate.

Most of the guys I knock around with have been out and brought old bikes to work on. Porky just brought an X7, Baz has an old GSX750 and Rob (crashtestdummy) wants me to fighter his Blade when this one is done. :D

Thanks mate, it gives me something to do in the evenings while her indoors is at work. I'm glad you enjoyed the thread mate, although its starting to become a bit of an ebook. I wish now I had took Si's advice and started another thread. Still, looking at the view count everyone knows where to find my and my shed, lol :D
