peice of piss, there was fuck all to taking it to bits, so putting it all back was a doddle.

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1258005509.jpg

The studs I used were 63mm long Ford studs (M12/1.5) The M12 is the size of the bolt and the 1.5 is the pitch of the thread. They have a 13.1mm spigot, thats the bit that bites into the hub. You'll need to drill out your hub to fit them, but if a numb nut like me can do it, then so can you.

http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1258065922.jpg

I put the 20mm spacer on first as the back has hollow sections that sat nice over the disc rotor nuts. Then the 10mm spacer went on next.

i have a quick question regarding the car tire install. I'm doing a conversion to my cbr 600 f3, and was looking at car rins. Is a 7" rim going to work with the VFR 750 SSSA?
or should i be looking for a 5"-6" rim?

Many thanks!

Either im retarded from all the cheap designer drugs, or... yeah, im just retarded. my email add can be seen in my profile. Im not sure where to get the pm link in this forum setup.

Any help would be appreciated. I've been doing research on the sssa for a couple months, and I happened across your post a couple weeks ago, been slowly going through it all. I have to say i've all of a sudden gotten some great ideas by looking at how creative you were with solving fabrication issues.

I know myself, It started with just a simple sssa on my 98 f3, but then turned into a full f4i front end conversion and now the addition of a car wheel with full r1 under-tail.

I just nabbed the f4i stuff from a guy in vegas, and the vfr 750 sssa is coming in next week. I've been having a hard time tracking down guys to do some metal fab. I suppose the real concern i have is getting the spacers made for the swing arm.

Suppose lifting the bike may be another issue as there's no good jack points on the bike. I may install bots where the frame sliders would go and jack from there.

Anyhow, without getting all long winded, I was curious about the car rim as i've seen 5-6" rims out there. But knowing the 7" will work makes me a little more confident. I cant really order my spacers until i know the offset of the rim.

But any help in the matter would be fantastic.

Cheers boss,
Nick

some news on my project. I just chatted with the duche in vegas, was just about to make payment on the parts last night, then he tells me that he sold it all to a local guy who smashed up his bike. I really had to hold back from flaming the garbage out of him in an email. whatever happened to first come first serve? Anyhow, im investigating the worst sites that i can use to spam his email. honestly, It was 4 days of back and forth with pics and prices... only for that. I wish i could punch him in the teeth.

anyhow, I managed to snag some stuff off ebay last night. some of it is beaten up pretty bad, but nothing a little fiberglass wont fix. Never used the stuff before, so this will be a good opportunity for some hands-on. trying to source out some r1 stuff right now. Have a co-worker who i just designed a tattoo for, her ex just sold their r1 and still has his OEM exhaust laying around. seeing if i can barter that right now. My worry is that the f3 subframe being welded to the main bike frame will cause some issues when i try and bend it to work. wont know till i get the parts in.

nvanvlymen
25-03-2011, 11:20 PM
the only thing i have 100% is the vfr sssa, should arrive next week. and i just bought a fairing stay bracket. everything else is as i find it. Knowing i can squeeze in a 7" rim back there, im going to start looking for a rim so i can get the offset at least. I would prefer a deep-dish kind of rim, but i suspect they will be expensive. I would be happy with just the sssa, and work on the rest over the summer. leaves the bike more in a position that i can ride it still. I'm planning on stripping the fairings off it this weekend to get a spot i can jack the bike up on, take some pics, and sell the set once i get my f4i fairings.

I'm a bit of a fiddler.

No, not a kiddy fiddler or anything like that. I like to fiddle with my bike and make what I see as improvments.

Anyway, a while ago I made a fiberglass mask for my bike and although I liked it, I didnt make me 100% happy so I sold it on ebay along with a couple of others.

I fitted a Highway hawk and although it was kinda ok, it still wasnt quite the THING!

I took another look at the mask I made and thought If I cut both sides and slightly change the angle of the top half, it could be something I could work with.

http://www.customfighters.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=1054&pictureid=8486

http://www.customfighters.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=1054&pictureid=8487

Then I fiberglassed the two parts of the mask back together again, and filled any uneven areas.

Next I made a template of the Highway hawk lamp and marked it onto the front of the mask, then covered the lamp in masking tape and put it into the opening I had cut out in the fiberglass mask.

Then it was an easy job of fiberglassing around the lamp to make it sit right in the mask.

http://www.customfighters.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=1054&pictureid=8135

I wanted to inhance it a bit more, and could see a gas mask in it.

I made a couple of ventorlators using rattle can lids as moulds with a bit more fiberglass, then cut holes in the mask with a plumbers tank cutter, and glassed the vents to it.

http://www.customfighters.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=1054&pictureid=8136

One each side

Then a lick of paint

http://www.customfighters.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=1054&pictureid=8150

Next I brought a couple of ford puma side blinkers and fitted them to the centre of each vent.

Hello mate, I have read and reread a good few times, your excellent thread re. CBR900 - vfr750 Swing Arm Conversion.

Inspiring, informative, and very cool, and ultimately what is inspiring me to do the same thing.

I have a few questions though and if you have time to answer them I'd be really grateful. Searching the web brings me to your door as the 'guy who actually knows how to do it'.

So, Im aware what arm i need, the spacer etc so getting it on and the shock connected I think is not going to prove a problem. What I dont know is ...

1) Do you use the rear brake from the cbr or vfr? How or why does it all fit?

2) I thought the vfr had a wheel that needed a 170 tyre but you've got a 180. What bike did the wheel come from? How does it all align ?

3) I got confused by the chain/sprockets. What sprockets were on it as a standard blade and what did you end up using?

4) I am only planning to do the swing arm, with a gold anodized rear, it will still be standard blade apart from that,(its a 'cadburys colours' 1998 cbr900RRW), I am assuming that the frame / swing arm arrangment is identical to your bike, I had an RRV and from what i noticed it was besides cosmetic changes, exactly the same bike. Is that the case?

Finally I wanted to know how it effected the seat height. I mean, if (simplifying it) I take the old arm out, bolt the new one in and connect up the shock, will the bike sit any higher or lower at the back?

If you can spare the time to get back to me sometime with the answers I would really appreciate it. Honestly I have searched the internet for a long time and I find references to it (which all sound very like they are talking about your thread) and ultimately I find your thread. You are the man, lol, please help me

Cheers

John

Hi mate, thanks for poping in and giving me a look. I've alwas thought of this thread as my workshop and now and again friends pop in for a chat and share ideas.

If you follow this link you can download a free pdf. file I composed that is a step by step "How To" do a single sided swing arm conversion, what not to buy, and how to make sure you get the right arm to start with.

https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B_FncGC_Bi0AOWNhNjNiYTItZTQ4MS00NjIwLWFiMWI tYzBjNGUzMmZlYTUz&hl=en&authkey=CKGC6ZEM

Feel free to download and print it of FYI.

OK here we go.

1. you will use the rear break for the VFR as it all mounts to the arm, but you might like to consider running your break line through your arm. If you do, then its easier to drill the arm out of the bike. check my index on page 1 and you'll see how i did it

2. I used an arm from a 96 VFR, but the wheel is only 5" wide, so for the wheel I used the earlier VFR 93 wheel that is 5.5j and will take a bigger tyre. This is a 17" wheel, and you could convert the front with a VFR wheel too but I read a few of the top WSB boys like a smaller fron wheel as it helps the bike turn in to a corner a bit quicker, so I kept my 16" front hoop. The last thing you'll need to know is to get the front and rear sprocket to line up you need to keep the arm over to the left of the frame and put a 35mm spacer on the right of the pivot bolt at the shock end of the arm. This will line the front and rear sprockets but will make the rear wheel 8mm negative off center, so you need to put an 8mm spacer between the wheel and the hub and that will bring everything back into line, front and rear.

3. On the standard blade the sprockets are different to the VFR and you cant mix the two because the CBR chain wont sit in the VFR teeth. This is because the CBR has a 525 pitch on the chain rollers, and the VFR has a 530 pitch. I went to a company called sprockets unlimited and they made me a sprocket that had a center to fit the VFR hub, but with a 525 pitch on the teeth so it meshed with the chain and front sprocket. You'll find a link to their site through my index.

4. yup, same bike.
The ride height will be a little higher because your putting on a bigger wheel and a 190 tyre that has a bigger section.

Thanks for those kind words my righteous russki friend, you make me chuckle too with some of the funny stuff you have said on my thread, lol. I remember when we were living next to each other in the same mental hospital and didn't realise it. I have no problems answering questions mate and ill go over stuff as many times as it takes, because I aint the smartest cookie in the jar, and ask question upon question when I don't understand something.

You'll have to wait just a little longer for the build to continue buddy as I'm extending my workshop to incorporate a spray booth so I can do my own paint. Don't worry ill be boring the fuck out of everyone soon lol.

Cheers again Surt, one of the things I admire about you is 'You don't give a fuck' and ill follow your example with the few on here, lmfaro.

Good on you Surt.

Google CBRRRT and see the first place it takes you Surt, and it aint a Honda dealer, lol. I get an about 5 emails a week asking me how to do stuff. If I can I help, if I can't I post a link to somewhere I think can help. IMO its the biker spirit to help out each other. I'm happy others want to use some of my ideas, but they are not all mine, for example the SSSA conversion. But I seem to be one of the only people that took time to document what I did. There are a lot of really clever people not just on here but other forums too, but if they don't write down what they did, then its difficult for others to follow.

Hey CBRRRT,

I just wanted to drop in and say thanks for this post. Without it I likely would still be just riding a stock bike.

Anyhow, a small update for you. I managed to get the VFR arm on the cbr F3, looks good, the welder did a good job making a mounting point for the shock linkage we run.

However I made a grievous mistake in following this post too closely. I ordered a 17x7 rim, then i thought for a bit, my bike is only a 600, and likely had a much smaller tire than your fireblade... i run a stock 160 tire. I did some measurements, and because my frame is much smaller in width than yours, and a 7" tire is just too big to be centered perfectly. My spacer on the right side of the SSSA was only something like 12mm and my offset on the SSSA is +25mm!!!

Mind you the rim i ordered has a 45mm offset. so i really only need a 20mm spacer to make thing OC. BUT when i go to see how a 7" block of material (wood in this case) would fit in the sssa, I noticed I couldn't the block of wood to the center of the bike... OH FK! I also noticed that my stock 160 came much further out from the rim, so i thought that would also be the case with the car rim...

But after looking at your post, i see the 200 rubber doesn't really come too much further out from the car rims lip... don't know if you can confirm that.

At this junction, i have two options, hope the shop hasn't shipped the rim yet, and get a 6.5" rim... or run with a positive offset. Probably nothing too much, 15mm-20mm most.

One thing though, how can i guarantee that the tire wont come out too much further than the rim? if it does, it means im running more of an offset to make the rim fit the space i have? (not to mention a bit of breathing room between arm and rubber.)

Here's the link to the WIP post i have:

This is the spacer 25mm outside dia with a 20mm hole through it, and 25mm long

Hey mate, I have a CBR 900RR 1993, and I will put a single swingarm VFR 1994, (I used the original wheel ) saw a tutorial of your project but in this tutorial, the spacer was 35 mm long... in this project I see that long is 25 mm......... I would like to make the spacer with this measures :

(1)
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/1678/spacer1.png
(2)
http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/3645/spacer2.png

The two with 20 mm hole.
I do more fat the spacer
What Is correct? long 25mm or long 35mm?
very Thanks

I made mine 25mm mate because that was the infomation I got from the interweb, but when it was fitted the spindle bolt went about 10mm to far through os I adjusted my info so others didnt make the same mistake.

Hope that helps bro.

mmmm ok, the correct measure is 35mm long. I assume that, there 10mm are in the inside the swingarm, between bearing inside swingarm and the end to swingarm... I express it good?

thanks bro
