hey all,

just wondering if theres anyone out there that has a fighter that is learner legal... aka, cbr250 etc. what mods have you done and what improvements have you made..

im able to go for my p's.. but that means another year of either riding my WR400 or going back to a small road bike.. which is fine.. but i want something a bit comfier and cruisier... i had an aprilia rs125 but it was too difficult to ride... took too much effort because it had bugger all torque... i want something that is effortless in its power delivery, but also doesnt need to be constantly changed up and down..

ive considered just getting a big road bike as ive never been pulled up on either of my other bikes and have done silly things... and have calmed down alot... i figured if i ride sensibly... they'd have no reason to pull me up... but the consequences are too great and not worth it... could someone enlighten me with what happens if you get pulled up on a bike that is not learner approved??

cheers
Linton

Fighter the WR mate start by <s>retarding</s> motarding it and do a custom rear ductail subframe job on it from there. Wont cost much will be in a world of its own and you get the comfort you're chasing with the handling fun and wheelies of the WR. and if you look hard enough I'm sure you'll be able to find a garrett turbo (bt12 i think) which will go on your bike too! Noice maaaate. You can have the most fulliest sick WR around...

Yep I'm being serious too a fighter doesnt just have to be a roadie it's an individual expression of you. Have a shot after all black plastics are really cheap

There was a cbr250 fightered on here a while back. But I'd go either:
Suzuki RGV250

Or a RVF400 (Similar to a VFR400 but L Legal)

I keep envisioning a WR in Blue with a current model GSXR750 Ductail on it. I reckon that'd be the goods man

yeah, no RGVs

however the RGgamma is, currently doing one for my girlfriend
think it'll make a good first bike cos unless you rev it it'll have scooter-style power

and its light as fuck, especially now i threw half of it in the bin :)

seriously though, my little 250 bandit that i used as a cheap run-around was a pretty capable machine
had to have it in the right gear though!

Mate the others are right you cant ride the RGV.

And if you get pulled over on a bigger bike youll get done for not displaying p plates and riding a bike that is to big for your provisional grading.

And you say youve calmed down alot??????

Fuck me grow up son and dont be a soft fucker and ride like the rest of us obey the rules when you have to and when you think you can get away with it run a muck son.

And if you think the chance to ride a big bike for twelve mths and act responsibly is on the cards think again.

The extra power youll have at hand is going to drive to to want to use it when you can your bound to get stung.

Get on the internet and look up some info on wr450s theres guys in the states doing these into road racers with full gp style fairings and shorter forks and rear linkages to bring down ride hieght rear sets and i recon you would have one very fuckn fast and hot little single for track and road.

IE:Less the fairings of course to come into line with "streetfighter"

DO THE WR SON AND STOP RESISING THE URGE TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT:D:D

Funny thing is in Qld you could ride an RGV but not the WR unless you were on your open car licence or had held it for 3yrs or more then 1 day "course" and voila open motorcycle go and buy yourself a turbo busa...

man what a world of different responses...

i like the wr... but its way too much fun in the scrub to motard it, and there arent any road rules out there... just common sense.... and yeh... you're all right.. i probs havent calmed down much... maybe just bored.

my dilemma... and reason im asking the question in the first place.... is that i originally had an rs125... great bike on the open road... crap in traffic... so i got the wr... great in traffic... crap on the open road... i ride to work everyday.. and now my work is moving so my traffic run has turned into a freeway run.. and the wr is tapped out doing 80kms, let alone for 40mins. i see the guys on bigger bikes that pull away from lights seemingly effortless from the amount of power they have. the wr has so much torque that the front wheel is coming up and constantly changing up the gears in the space of an intersection... its not smooth and effortless... it is grumpy though

i dont want to jump the gun... i dont want to cheat... i dont want to disrespect the laws that be... just want a happy medium in a bike.. a good mix of power/torque and easy to ride.

the cbr 250 fighters look better than i expected.. maybe an idea.

cheers for all the responses

anyone ridden a ducati m620ie??

_M_
05-09-2008, 11:43 AM
Just re-gear the WR and it should be able to effortlessly hold 120 all day, just look at your post changing gears through an intersection says to me that its geared way low and a simple re-gearing would do wonders.

Nah mate too scared they'll be like the italian tanks in the 2nd world war - 5 reverse gears and only 1 forward.

Seriously though I agree with M - Take the damn 60 tooth rear sprocket off drop a 50 on it and you'll still have the torque to pull your mingers but you'll also be more than capable of doing 100 k's an hour too. Oh and Retards are so much fun they're almost more fun than sex...

How bout a 650 Hyosung???

I know they're not exactly the best bike made, but u can hav a LAMS approved model de-restricted and still ride it, coppers will never know!!!!

I got a mate with 1 with full Micron exhaust, K&N filter, Jetted n tuned, made 73.1HP on the Dyno.

I know its not ground breaking power, but more than enough to get the job done

If your after a quick fix have a look at the new cb400 its an awesome little bike and for around `10 k its a great start on a fighter base.

And yeah with the gearing, drop to a 40t rear sproket down from what ever you got.

Ive gone back to stock gearing on my wr450 14-50 and ill sit all day on around 100kph no dramas and top out at about 140-150

I ran motards with 14-40 and it was perfect still pulled 3 gear power wheelies and when i put the dirties back on tried the 40t and it was still fine just wouldnt really pull top gear that well when up it but would easy just cruze in top at 120+ no dramas, but not as much fun in the dirt to much clutch slipping to keep it on song through the tight stuff.

Go on do it you know you want to[}:)]

Oh and by the way theres a rumour in the mist that QLD is going to come into line with other states and get rid of the Q ride crap that the bike shops are running to promote sales for themselves by being given the power to give out licenses to prospective buyers.[:0]

Damo that rumour has been circulating for quite some yrs now. The issue isnt with the tractor sales mob either it's with the Empire. Everyone passes there. That's all I'll say for legal reasons.

Funnily enough Qld isn't about to can those laws they're going to upgrade them to include trucks and heavy vehicles too. Q-Truck is on the way and will then allow qualified driving schools (I own one) to deliver courses in the same fashion as Q-Ride. It already happens with trucks but currently only for B-Doubles and Road Trains. It will be extended out to cover everything from MR through to MC upon successful completion of the course. Yep soon to be real unfortunately. But don't stress, because under the current legislation a truck driver can take his mate along for 50hrs under supervision in a B-Double (or Road Train) and sign him off as competent thereby effectively giving him a licence. No theory, no real practical experience. 50hrs logged in a log book and voila. Job done thanks for coming. Townsville to Sydney Return qualifies for this with around 6 - 10hrs over the minimum. 4 days driving and it's done.

But I digress. Back to the topic at hand, Qld isn't going to scrap the laws they can't keep up with the current demand for Tests now so to have to go back and take on all of those Tests currently outsourced to Q-Ride providers, would completely back log the system to beyond a manageable affair which it's almost at now due to the low wages paid to testing officers compared to what driving instructors can earn if they really want to put in the hours. At the end of the day they just can't shut it down as they can't get the staff to cover the work if they do and they know it...

The 620ie's my current ride. Gotta say it handles well, and I've ridden it for 3-4 hours at a stretch. BUT, if you're on a budget, this is not the bike to get. Servicing's expensive... and don't stack it! Not without full insurance! Parts are ridiculously expensive.
