Haven't done anything new as yet. But I do have plans.
Just been designing the bracket for the dash for the bike as the one I have at the moment is only a temp one (read crap). So been drawing away a bit and came up with this...
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1252103623.jpg
Have a bit of stainless plate coming my way, so should be sweet :)

hell no,
keeping the original one.
Analogue tacho, digital speedo. Plus I like it...

So finally got down to doing some work on the bike. Finished the speedo bracket and also the coolant overflow bottle a few weeks ago.
Latest project has been the undertray for the bike. Had a nice piece of stainless, so sketched out a rough idea of what I wanted. Decided to include the battery box into it as well in 1 piece
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1258073941.jpg
stripped the back end of the bike down
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1258114915.jpg
Got the angle grinder out and got to work on it
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1258073769.jpg
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1258126059.jpg
Drilled a few holes, made up a couple of brackets and she fits!!!!
http://www.asfphotos.com/upload/1258121380.jpg
.
Still need to trim off the back and bend it uo (due to the original rear light).
Hopefully can get some more work done on it tomorrow

It because its not that easy, that makes it all worth while.
When I see Streetfighter production bikes from the big manufacturers with their multi million £ R and D departments, they leave me "Yeah, so what".
Nope! its you lads on here that spend all those hours in the garage, shed, work shop, or what ever that have my total admiration.

Had a problem with the h/light, after waiting for 3 weeks for it from the UK, it arrived cracked. But since magaed to sort out a replacment from the guy.
Having a bit of drama with the brake lever though as they seem to be of a different year R1. Had to make a new bush for the clutch, but the brake is going to be a bit of a nuisance. Talking to the guy now trying to sort it out.

Cheers boys. I know what I want for the bike. Just takes a while to find or make the parts though.
Next on my list is to re-make the coolant overflow bottle. Gonna try to make it out of a solid bar alloy. Drill and bore it so as to have no caps welded on using a sintered cap as a breather (and to fill up from). Then make a bracket with 2 mounting points (rather than the current one with only 1 mounting point) and finally finish it off nicely in black so as not to really show up next to the radiator

Yeah that's the way.
I was going to say take your swingarm off and slip the intact chain off the sprockets but you've got the brace on the swinger to get the chain out of as well :(
wackyrider
09-08-2010, 12:32 AM
Yeah the brace is a pain. Had to disconnect the line off the caliper as well to remove it as it was passed through the swinger. Could do with some new fluid in there anyway, so might as well
timbo
09-08-2010, 06:09 PM
I take it that the rear calliper wont fit through the swingarm brace and besides rear brakes are over rated anyway

A couple of hours in the shed, which brings the grand total up to 8 hrs. Was trying to find some wood around the shed to be able to stack up under the engine, but couldn't find enough. So after a bit of looking around found the next best thing. A spare wheel off a car which was at the back of the shed, a few pieces of wood over it and voila, perfect height with the front wheel sitting just off the ground and the bike nice and steady. Undid the mounting bolts and just got a friend to keep the engine steady as i lifted the frame off the engine.
removed a few clips and the controls from the front end and its almost done, part 1 that is. Now I need to get a hold of a C-Spanner to remove the Triples off the frame. Anyone local has one I could borrow??

Also does anyone know what the rubber nipples in the frame are? I tried removing them as I want to powdercoat the frame, but they wouldn't budge. Managed to get a finger in the frame next to one of them and it seems like there is a rubber block on the inside of the frame and they are there to keep in in place. Maybe for when the frmae was being welded together?? Any ideas?

Fuck Jules, you're getting right into it ! Are you coating the swinga too ? Did you manage to get the bearings out of the head stem ? Gonna look sweet mate.

12-08-2010, 10:43 PM
Head stem bearing were easy. They're in good nick too. Having an issue with the bearings in the swinger though. Seems like they're pressed in. Want to powder coat the swinger as well, so they're gonna have to come out. Made a little bearing puller today after work. Wasted an hour machining on the lathe and mill, only to not have any luck being able to pull the bearings out.
