Ok, after picking up this '89 ZXR 750 - I've decided to do a bit of a 'street fighter' on her.. and get it all looking nice in the process...

After...
Scrubbed the wheels, regreased the chain.. scrubbed some more... scrubbed some more.. took off the front cowl..
Replaced the battery...
Just replaced the brake fluid too, was dark brown and funky looking.. like a cup of black milky tea.. pulls up much
harder too now !

cluster is removed.. ( and ready to tag the plugs with numbers.. )
http://myarcadegames.com/bike/750/DSC01057.jpg
http://myarcadegames.com/bike/750/DSC01056.jpg
Gotta be atleast 15 kilo's of metal there... add that to the front cowl - that's about 20 kilo's.. that front wheel's gonna be hard to keep down..

phase 2 begins, removing the exhaust.. but to do that.. you gotta remove the radiator, oil cooler and associated pipes... fittings and stuff..
L/H ( clutch side ) radiator top bolt
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase2/009_1.jpg
what an odd nut.. the spacer is to stop the rubber getting crushed...

Now, on to the R/H ( brake side ) radiator bolts...
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase2/011_1.jpg
Bolt out..
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase2/018_1.jpg
Here's the wires to the thermo for the radiator.. on the L/H ( clutch side ) coloured blue.. ( photo for reference )
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase2/013_1.jpg
wires off...
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase2/015_1.jpg
Ok, didn't get any pics of removal of the actual radiator ( takes both hands to pull it out - but it involves removing the horn - and pulling it forwards and out..
leaves a big hole, like this..
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase2/019_1.jpg
Stainless pipes, nice !
Filthy... and note the oil cooler below.. that's gonna pose a problem...

Starting to remove the split flanges around the pipes..
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase2/023_1.jpg
a little superficial what would appear to be corrosion.. but it was like a powder, and just rubbed right off with the touch of a finger..

Flanges off cylinder 1 and 2..

Now, to the removal of the engine.. this will be phase 3..
I've located the main bolts.. Front R/H Top ( Brake side )
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase2/033_1.jpg
Bottom, same side..
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase2/034_1.jpg
Here's the oil cooler, which sits seperate from the bike on a metal frame..
Also attached is the oil filter - never seen an oil filter that wasnt on a sump before - this threw me for a couple minutes looking at all the piping..
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase2/035_1.jpg
And with it all off, the block is looking much more accessible..

Ok, haven't undone the chain yet.. but I'm working top down..
Unplugged the wiring from the cluster to the rest of the bike..
Removed the coils from above cylinders 1 and 4
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/008_1.jpg
Wiring's disconnected and out of the way.. easy access to the motor..
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/011_1.jpg
bolt's out from the top of the motor..
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/012_1.jpg
lets have a look under there...

http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/015_1.jpg
bloody clean for a 20yo bike..

Here's the carb's before i started trying to drop the engine... ( airbox off.. )
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/DSC01012_1.jpg
Ok, so i realised that 'supercheap' tools, live up to their name.. super cheap, super shit...
So i went out and bought these puppies..
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/019_1.jpg
what ensued...
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/006_1.jpg
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/007_1.jpg
The engine is removed easily, by removing 2 bolts from the following locations ( as seen in the 2 pics below ) 1 on the top, 1 on the bottom..
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/008_1.jpg
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/009_1.jpg
As you can see, the motor requires support to lift and hold in the frame - to remove the 2 retaining bolts.
I used my hydraulic car jack for this.. which made the bike unstable on the rear stand.. but i kept an eye on it..
( working unassisted )
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/010_1.jpg
there's alot of space there now...
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/011_1.jpg
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/012_1.jpg
I had to remove the front sprocket cover, to remove the retaining nut from the frame.. having never done this one the kawasaki, i can safely say that I'll never allow it to look like this ( filthy ) once it's back together again...
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/013_1.jpg
pretty disgusting in there, been 20 years since it was detailed from the looks of it...
and miscellaneous wiring...
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/014_1.jpg
from this pic here, it's pretty clear - but the white container on the right is the fuel filter... and the metallic cylinder on the left of it is the fuel pump...
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/015_1.jpg
chain is off.. wheels still on.. but only just...
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/016_1.jpg
Top down, motor out...
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/017_1.jpg
there's still plumbing in there that's gotta be removed - but at this stage it was about 2c in the shed.. and i was freezing.. so lets put it to bed for the night..
http://www.myarcadegames.com/bike/750/phase3/018_1.jpg

Nice effort Chris, that must have taken you hours to photo and write up. Cheers mate.
The bike obviously has only be used as a work horse for the last 20 years. Sounds so wrong saying 20 years! I remember the day they came out my mate brought one over and we thought it was the maddest looking race rep bike we'd ever seen - how can that be 20 years ago? That was yesterday ....wasn't it?

Hillsy, I'd love to keep it all stock bro but the simple is, that it was dropped quite hard.. the plastics are pretty much U/S, the mounting brackets are all munted.. replacements will cost more than i spent on the bike.. and it's just not economically viable to 'restore' to original per se.. but my plans are..
1) polish the frame ( professionally done )
2) soda blast the block to remove the paint
3) carby rebuild, pull the head off.. check the rings etc..
4) shorten that tail.. but keep it looking like it did in the first couple of pics..
I reckon it looks awesome in that 'green' even though i'm a honda fan.. the green just screams ' check this shit out ! '
I'm looking at something along these lines..
http://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2007/10/05/bikepics-1046426-800.jpg
just without as an 'agressive' tail.. something a bit more sedate..

thanks guys, i was posting this build up over on psb - but.. being that billywhizz reckons i should post it up here - i was waiting till the 'deconstruction' was almost complete before i bored you all with a 300 page ' where's the bolt to get the tank off ? '
Scotty mac, yeah - I'm interested mate.. I'm thinking something short, sharp.. like the new 1098 ducati tail, or something distinct.. I've got a 97 900rr blade, and it's got a nice tail.. but not really as agressive as i'd like..
But I'm definitely interested - What have you got there matey ? ( if it saves me a week on the glassing.. it's time saved that I can spend on getting things polished etc )

Well, aparently the carbs are passed their use by date - and the monoshock is going to be pricey - which leads me to either a hagen from the UK or something similar for around $600 aud..
I have little choice at this point other than to either locate a set of low k' carbies - or put a cheap ( if i can find one ) motor from a zx9 into it.. or from another zxr750..
I'm really starting to get a bit blue about the whole thing, I had no idea it would be this difficult.. *sighs*
If any of you guys can point me in the right direction - I'd appreciate it..
( I think i'm not all that far from standing right back and start throwing matches at it ! :P )

ok, today's 20 minute effort ( out in the blistering cold, between bursts of intermittent rain )
- Remove the top yolk on the bars -
here's to start..

http://www.perthstreetbikes.com/7518/My---ZXR-750---Project--/022_1.jpg
self explanatory, really...
http://www.perthstreetbikes.com/7519/My---ZXR-750---Project--/024_1.jpg
size 6 allen key.. to release the top of the yolk..

http://www.perthstreetbikes.com/7521/My---ZXR-750---Project--/026_1.jpg
same sized screw ( 6mm hex ) under the yolk to hold it on the uprights.. 1 on each side..

with a bit of gentle persuasion from underneath - I've managed to break the monkey like grip from the clamp..

the head of the beast...

got to get to that C nut that's underneath - have considered using a flat bladed screw driver and a hammer... but rather than molesting it and mashing it - I might just try and get a tool to take it off..

Ok, I've got it all apart - frame is barren..
it's in 2 pieces..
It's gonna be too hard to keep this clean if it's polished - can anyone recommend a good painter than can strip it and make it look purdy for me ?

I love what you are doing there matey boy, and with the photos it all makes perfect sense. If the rest of the build is documented as well this is going to be a superb thread. [:p]
Keep it going Fella, happy days! :D
Do something about reducing the size of that fuckin orible chopper picture though mate, its fucking up the screen. Oh and you might get a rear fender something like that from a place that makes small domestic trailers, Bwaaaaarrrr sorry mate a little bit of sick just came up [xx(]

If you're going to outsource the job, may as well get it powdercoated - just make sure you tape up the bits you don't want coated (inside headstem, etc)
And if you're going to do that, then make sure the dumb bastards don't go pulling all you pretty tape out. It's a cunt to scrape out.
