Before I attack it would I be right in thinking if I put the alloy lower/steel stem in the freezer for a while the stem will shrink and the hole in the yoke will grow slightly allowing ease of removal ?

Are they still together?
If they are seperate then freeze the stem and put the bottom yoke in the oven if you wanna get the stem out you'll need a press.

Yeah still in one piece....so its off to a local engineer...
Cheers Pom.

Put the stem and bottom clamp in the frezzer for a couple of hours, then pour boiling water over the clamp as close to the stem as you possibly can without warming the stem. the stem will nearly fall out. Ive done it it works.

But won't the hot water expand the ali thus closing the hole slightly ?
All the same...yokes going in the freezer..

Yes Russ it does expand the alloy, it may seem strange but it actually makes the hole bigger.

What sort of weird Sukzuki trickery is this........

Must only work on old heavy bruisers with steel stems...the r1's is ali as well as the yoke.

Sooo got 'creative' and cut off the stem just above the yoke and then put the hacksaw blade through the hole...and [u]carefully</u> cut through it thus releasing the tension. Then it just pushed out using the vice and 2 sockets.

Unfortunately the Xjr stem is a gnats smaller.....off to find a metal sprayer...:(

hot metal spray? is that hard enough for a stering stem mate.

Get it MIG or TIG welded and turned down, just get someone who knows what they're doing to do it as it's a bit of an art!!!
Or option B would be get an amateur to do it and possibly fuck it!!

Cheers'en.

Option C is to bore the hole bigger, turn up a Top Hat bush to suit & interference fit them together.

Option D .. Go to a tool shop and get a new stem turned out of 4140 or other tool steel to suit your needs

And I'll go for answer 'C' (pays to ask a friend). I'll give Mr Ben a ring..
'D' will wait until I make the bottom yoke ( nose fairing will hide it anyway).

Mate - why bother with one? just a bit of broom stick and some pva glue will do the trick ;)

So I sent it to 'No problem at all, I can do that easy' Ben.

Oh and Pete...I would but that would make the handling a bit...wooden...get it...wooden.......Ok I'll get me coat.......[:I]
