what do you think of this style of seat set up ( ie no rear fairing or very little fairing ) im thinking of changing the set up of the fighter ( 85 gixxer 750 ) that i"m building ( project which = long time = as long as its going to take ) from an 04 R1 tail unit to one of these

I do like the look of those minimal type ones but you gotta keep in mind too I think that these pics always show bikes without indicators and number plates so you will have to picture it with those on there as well if you are gonna ride it on the road.

I always match up a seat to the tank. Ive always loved Ducati 916 type single race seats becasue there llong and flat like the tank. Actually I rekon a k5-k6 Gixxer Unit would look pretty sweet too. And always the good ol R1 tail unit. All awesome choices

thats the prblem so many choices

i have both the 03 and 04 R1 tail units if i decide to go that way but i like the look of the minimal seats so i am going to do battle with the D.O.T. and find out if i can actually achive a legal set up.

i was talking to an officer from the DOT about hotrods and mod bikes and i that conversation he mentioned something about bringing out slimline number plates for bikes as well as some other stuff about moding bikes

a real intresting point that we discussed was frames and that unless you get an engineere to approve it you arn't aloud to do anything to your frame, but when you get a mod ( eg single seat ) the first thing that the DOT dose is drill two holes into it so that they can attach the mod plate go figure!!

U may find that the K5 - K6 can be used as a sort of Minimum seat unit. all legal in regards to lights. Just need to bring it forward up against the tankand get a custom pad made up or cut the original

Hey Mate Can you please email me a bigger side shot of your bike about 30% bigger than that one? I'll do a edit tonight and email it back to you. If you can get it the same size of the K6 Piccis from the Suzuki Website that that will give a pretty to scale example. Either way I'll resize it to suit 99%

too right about people putting holes in "structures"

one scratch on a frame and its a write-off, but its ok to dill holes in it WTF?

sorry i have people wanting to put holes in my gear all the time
galvo's are the worst, they drill holes anywhere the fuck they want and youre the last to know about it!

I reckon that would look great

Prolly never be legal though unless it covers the back wheel.

I am a pretty big fan although I do prefer the first one, maybe it is just the ohlins shock that I can see that I like :)

i wouldnt even bother trying to make it legal
unless u have a big fugly mudguard it'll never happen

plus would need the rear subframe engineered, and i dont know if the engineer would like the exposed rear tyre :(

whats the biggest fine they can slap u with?

What about the short seat unit and a longer, close fitting hugger covering the rear wheel?

decided to go ahead with it reguardless and have bitten the bullet, have just ordered a fiberglass rear fairing from racers edge, i figure that a fiberglass one would be easer to work with ( ie cut and reshape as nessary )

I'll post up the progress as i go

Have you thought about using a dual high mount exhaust protruding from under the stubby tail section of the first pic in this thread? They would cover the tire but would it be legal?

03gixxerpilot
09-08-2006, 01:48 PM
the exhaust in the first pic exits under the chassis just in front of the rear wheel the piece your looking at is remote for the rear shock,

not to bad of an idea though, but not the look that i'm going for

fimpBIKES

the exhaust should be legal, as long as it covered the wheel at 45degrees from the axle
they would need to be BIIIG cans

03gixxerpilot
09-08-2006, 07:58 PM
hey fimp what about an 06 R6 style numberplate holder back to that line would that be ok or not and if not why

Yeah, what Fimp said !
Cops have written a few tickets around Mt Nebo and Glorious
when they want to discourage bikes. Law is something like
"Must extend to 45 degree's from the rear spindle with a
average ??kg rider seated"
Pretty much as you see factor spec.

Lots of criminals out there ;)

it should be ok as long as it is inclosed up the top and at least as wide as the rear tyre

i was thinking of plastic welding something similar for my tail on the tiller if i can be arsed
although i will probably just ride around and cop an occasional mudgaurd fine

i think they are only $60 or so arent they?

Tony Nitrous
09-08-2006, 08:11 PM
Yeah, I think the fines bearable,
not sure if it carry's 1 demerit point or not though ?

not to sure haven't got one yet ( touch wood ) and I'll proberly put something hidious on it untill its got its R/W cert then i'll put the R6 style one on it
same as you cop the fine i know most of the cops up here and they don't hassel me, they actually let me get away with more than most its just the ones that i don't know that i have to worry about ;)

03gixxerpilot

depends on the cop there are two fines for it one carries a fine and one dosen't same amount of $ though
