I was looking at this pic and while I really like the looks...I was wondering if anything could be done about the radiator
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/BIKE.jpg

Here's the same bike with a smaller "oilboiler" rad
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/1536/bike29hc.jpg

And without any radiator...or maybe hidden under the seat....
http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/8288/bike12nx.jpg

So I guess my question is...will a smaller or relocated radiator work on a watercooled GSXR and has anyone got pics of how to do it?

Nope, you could stick on a smaller rad but then the bike would over heat, not good!!.
using s rad off a oil cooled wouldnt work because the smaller rads are for oil cooling...

i would check out a rad of a naked SV 1000 as from memory they are staight not curved and quited alot smaller alot like the second photo.

there is a guy down south who is doing undertails for SV's
apparently its more efficient cos of the big -ve pressure zone behind the tail
fukt if i know where u would put all you electrics and battery though :D

heres my effort on my sv....

I might fit a water cooled motor just so I can have that set up Fimp.......

why not replace with polished alloy radiator to match rest of bike. used for high perf applications in cars, could easily have one custom made.

3 sensible ideas including one good one out of 12 isn't a bad ratio I guess

Thanks slip

Something they're done on some liquid cooled UK customs is to use to the frame rails to carry the coolant to the rear of the bike. It gives you more area to loose heat with and it allows the use of smaller rear or hidden radiators. Might take a bit of work but it looks good usually.

Now we're getting somewhere.

I was looking at an old rear engined race car with hoses to the front radiator and thinking about reversing the idea....

Just an idea now...the bike I wanted is sold[V]

Whadda bout painting the original with silverfrost?
Mine seems to need a big radiator and thermofan when going slow in traffic.
It's also got an oil cooler that hangs below the rad in front of the headers.

Silverfrost is an aluminium paint, gives a matt silver finish.
It's pretty good with heat as it was used on headgaskets.
What about fabricating a alloy frame for the rad to sit in?

Bumping this thread back to the top. This is very interesting, has anyone tried any of these solutions? What about doing an undertail smaller rad and then putting an oil cooler where the rad was? That should keep the temps normal.

You seem pretty keen to loose that rad there Raven? Exben might have a few suggestions. I think a more compact unit would be the answer as opposed to moving it to the back as the air flow would be minimal unless you shped some kind of scoops to draw air in at the rear, which in turn leads to an ugly set up.

I think the trick is to work with what you have. A belly pan is a top way of detracting from the sizable radiator. Check out Lucky rikkie's GSXR to see what I mean:

I really like his bike and you are right the belly pan does a very well at distracting your eyes away from the hideous rad. I'm going for a super clean minimalist approach on this bike and adding a belly pan isn't something I really considered. Depending on what color I choose for the bodywork, I might do a very small belly pan just to balance the color out. We'll see.

Can I just ask why you had the Water cooled bike? Was it a bargain or one that you got given? I only ask as the rad seems to be a real issue for you and by the time you buy a new Water cooled motor you may find that you were better off starting from scratch with a crash damaged oil cooled model or bandit to keep the minimalism you speak of? Just a suggestion.

The bike was a bargain and also partly an impulse buy. I wish I would have known it was such a pain to put the oil motor in before I bought it, otherwise I would have passed it up. Too late now, I'll just work with what I've got.

What's the fun if everything in life is as easy as bolt-on parts? I'll enjoy the challenge.

Or you could use radiator covers like these and turn the radiators into highlights

http://www.bikefarmmv.de//EN/cooler_radiator_cover/zeige_artikel.php?fid=201011

Just don't buy them from BikeFarm, took me ages to get my money back from them. It was only thanks to our German buddies ( AKA Badvan and co ) that I did get my money back

No reason you can't move the rad to the rear of the bike. Anyone seen the Britten Story? Kiwi legend, moved rad to underseat, so less drag in a straight line :)
