Wondered if anyone has expericanced the same problem as me and have removed the solid tapped insert in their clip-ons.

I have a 87 GPX and want to remove the fairing and fit bar end mirrors. Once i removed my bar ends i realised that they have a solid threaded bar that seams to be welded on the end of the clip on.

Unfortunately the tread size is much bigger than my mirror bolt thread size - bugger. Therefore i propose to grring off the welds and remove the solid part. I'll then use rubber hose, nut and washer to place over the end of the mirror bolts to expand in the clip-on once tightened.

Has anyone done this before, should it work and how far does that solid bar go in to the clip-on or is my clip on solid all the way through which makes this method impossible?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Its just a stop gap till i can afford to get my top clamp drilled to fit risers and straight bars. Managed to get a second hand top clamp so hoping that won't be too far away now.

What type of bar end piece are they? Pop up a piccy and I should be able to tell you which ones off another Kwaka will swap over. Failling that , run a drill bit up them or bore the mounting hole in your mirror out to the same size at the bar end weight bolt is.

Cheers mate, i thought about boring out the hole in the mirror mounting as it seamed the easiest and made the most sense. Not much meat on the mounting hole though so canned that idea, plus i'd like to leave the look of em stock.

I'll try and get a photo up tonight or tomorrow to show you what its like.

Actually going to have a go at grinding the welds off tomorrow morning, if that doesn't work then going to try and run a drill bit down the bore of the clip on.

I'll post photos of progress in case they help anyone else.

Out of interest, any idea what inside diameter the clip-ons were once you removed the end part,

cheers

I have more chance of shitting on the moon then getting my bike to look anything like the one below but think that mirrors are the same style and look good on clip ons.

Eventually will send the spare top clamp i bought from a wreckers to exben once i saved some funds to buy the bars and any extra cables i'll need for the rise in height.

Current R1's have a threaded section inside the clip on like that. They are not welded in, just pressed in.
To get em out, heat the bar up with a hot air gun (or hair dryer) to expand the metal and bash the fuck out of it (unless you have a press...)

However, I have seen this method fail, and the bar being grindeded to release the end weight mount... :)

You're the pussy I got oldschool on my Z1000 and used a hacksaw. As soon as I cut off the excess those puppies all but fell out.

Took the angle grinder to the offending clip on solid bar ends at the weekend,

I have now fitted the mirrors with the pissy little allan bolts that came with them. I choped a piece of rubber pipe down and found some nuts to fit the thread.

I have attached them and can't pull them off (ew er missus)but they will twist a bit if you try which pisses me off but can't think of any other way to attach them at the minute.

If anyone has any other ideas how to get a firmer mount (i can't seam to stop with the innuendo) please let me know - answers on a postcard.

Please bare in mind i have limited equipment and i'm currently woking with allen keys left over from an ikea build and an old toothbrush.
