Good Afternoon Folks,

I got an interesting email from one of my best buddys who is currently living in Jap-land.

He is over there for 18months or so I think, then once he comes back later this year it seems that he wants to get his bike license….

Howdy, got a Q for you about motorbike modding.
What sort of rules are there! I want to build something like this TW200, will there be issues with it under oz laws (i'd say yes!). Would it be possible to do if it was done to an old bike, say a 1980 model? Do the noise laws change for older bikes liek they do with older cars (underslung supertrapp can't be quiet!). And so on. What you reckon bike modder man!

Oh and a stock one
http://www1.odn.ne.jp/~chuoh-auto/1-0430tw200-blu.JPG

It seems the TW200 design is fairly old but also pretty rare in oz. I've seen some for sale but they are all nearly new ones. New it's only $5k oz about. I was thinking of using something pretty old and cheap and adapting on the rear swingarm and super fat rear wheel (or just making a new swingarm for the rear and using the fat wheel with that). It has to have the fat rear wheel!
I'm thinking something like a 1980 XT250 would be a good basis and also cheap as buggery to actually buy.

He knows plenty about modifying cars (he’s a dorifto-master and has done a few engine swaps and plenty of suspension work in his day) and he is pretty clued in on engineers certificates etc. So I wouldn’t put anything past him, ability-wise.

He’s one of those annoying types who gets things done on-time and for nearly fuck all money, so im pretty sure he could pump out this style of bike (with my help naturally, cos I love a good project bike :D)

The bike question is what we should be looking for as far as a donor bike goes, oh and it would have to be learner legal and two-stroke. In NSW it means that it would need to be one of the following

Preferrably already with a mono-shock rear suspension, then we wouldn’t have to get things engineered ;)
I was thinking DRZ-400 perhaps, but they are still about 4 grand used so….

Any suggest a good donor? Say for under 2 grand??

The next step would be wheels etc
Anyone think of something chunky enough to steel the wheels off of for this kind of thing?? They remind me of quad wheels! (which opens up the possibility of single-siders…)

Would probably look at doing up the swingarm as a custom job, using something like a zx6r rear shock or similar (I just know that these are normally a cheap sort of an upgrade people do on their SV650’s so that would just be an example)

Anyways, anyone got suggestions?

What about an old SL or a Stockman? I'm sure you'd find one pretty cheap.

fimpBIKES

honda SL's seem to be about the same price and as rare as the TW200 on bikepoint

but then again there dont seem to be many old bikes on bikepoint

ooooh, there is a TW200 in the tradingpost for a grand
looks like you can find older ones :D

(pretty blue bits WTF??)

From what I've gathered bikepoint is just dealers showing their shiny, expensive toys.

Tradingpost and All classifieds(southern NSW) I reckon will be your best bet.

thanks lucas, some good buys on there (like the crashed cbr250rr for $750 :D)

this would definitely do the job

im just not a fan of deus.

they are the anti christ in the circles i travel in

27-05-2008, 02:14 PM
oh yeah, its not like i'd just let him buy a Dues or anything (and your right, they are scooters for yuppies in denial)

but if i rocked up on a custom TW200 you'd still nod yeah?

27-05-2008, 02:15 PM
Seemed like nice enough guys when I dropped in while I was over for AFR. Some of thier show bikes are pretty snazzy and you can buy a lot of thier gear straight off the shelf.

Thats exactly my thoughts on the deus boys! I like their style but they r diluting the cafe racer market & yeh they r a fuckin rip off! Around $15000 for n SR400![xx(][}:)]

When not building streetfighters I rock the classic chop circles as Choppaweeza can attest. If you rocked up to those guys on a deus thinking your all that youd get a kicking.

Im all for modifyed bikes but if you rock like you built it yourself then you deserve a beating. Hence we dont like Deus as its making the scene the habitat for people with more wallet then skill.

Ive been in there too and am actually mates with one of the dealers but he knows id never buy from them as i build my own stuff.
And im not paying 2g's for a nose fairing

i see what you mean

so what do you think of these blokes buying the ready-made customs?
like the AWESOME one next to our tent at the GoldCoast BikeShow last year that sold for $50k (and it drained its battery overnight, top quality that is....)

anyways, this'll be a fairly stock TW if we can find one for the right price
just an extended swinger, cutdown plasics and a minimal zorst ;)

I agree with you, Weasel. They're money makers, not scene setters.
I spose they must know the market though, because they sell them. [B)]

yeah but to wankers.

and when you pull up to them on your fighter (Specially yours) they know you built it and they are wankers.

Seifer
27-05-2008, 08:51 PM
I'm a cafe fan, and to be honest I love some of their bikes. But they are overpriced and for that reason, anyone who rides them has that wank factor. What is even funnier is they leave the japanese price tags on some of their clothing/accessories so you can literally work out the ridiculous mark up they have on these items. Having said that, who wouldnt if you were in their position. They know what a wank product it is, but then they remember their bank balance and all is ok again.
