Well I've lined up my CNC machinist and he's keen. I've got my critical hole centre dimensions figured now I just need to design my triple set.

I'm looking for advise from someone who has made a set before as to pitfalls and areas to pay special attention to. Actually an A-Z of how to design them would be nice.

Anyone(exben) able(exben) to(exben) help(exben) or(exben) point(exben) me(exben) in(exben) the(exben) right(exben) direction(exben)?:D

Cheers lads - your helps appriciated.

Planning on using Aluminium 6082 tho is T4 ok? Anyone able to suggest a supplier around brissy for the billet?

if your getting you own ones made up make it so you cant see the bolts from the front
looks heaps hornier that way!!!

or maybe some of those ones without clamping bolts :D

Or these.

BTW Pete, CNC is for girls [:0], if you've got your hole centres & offset sorted, just find yourself a talented bloke with a mill & you can make 'em however you want (& you won't hafta sit in front of your 'puter for hours designing them) ;)

I forgot to mention I have a contact for 6000 & 7000 series Ally billets at really good prices.
Your turn Large ;)

Tony Stark made these in a cave!!

:D

Actually Ben made them, and can probably make you a Iron Man suit, but you'll need to supply your own Ark reactor

Hey exben can you pretty much make triples to put any forks in any frame? (Obviously length may be an issue)

Fish
22-05-2008, 10:04 AM
Yep pretty much, just use the head stem from the frame and make the rest to suit.

Sweet thank guys - ben those clamps look sensational. Turbo - i may just use you for your aluminium contact - was planning on using either 6082 or 5083 (BTW did you know 5083 is used as armour in certain applications). Tho if i've got a cnc mill and a programmer just sitting there then why not use them :D I love free stuff.

I'll (finally) be pulling the bike apart, have solidworks installed and ready to go this weekend so i'll get my images up later for you guys to pay out. Cheers guys!

There's also the ones from Degenerate.

This is a prime example to answer Matt's question. I gave Ben the stem, the height I needed the risers to be, the size of the bars, the diametre of the forks and the centres and here's the result:

when are we going to see this bike of yours gixxey?

Righto so just knocked this up at lunch. The fork to stem dimensions are rough (+/- 1mm) I need to pull the top triple off this weekend. At its thinest its 10mm the webbing is 20mm (will mod this to be the same thickness as existing top clamp) with an overall thickness of 50mm. This will probably end up being about 49/48ish after the block is skimmed. All depends on what material I can get my hands on.

Ok - pick it apart guys. Is there a recommended slit width? I was just going to size the fork holes 0.1 over to try keep equal loading on the fork walls.

There's a lot of work going into it so it won't be any time soon.

they'll be strong with those dimensions

my franks racing top one only has a thickness of 8mm in the non-webbed bits so your pretty tidy in that area
the 12mm band is probably excessive too, i'd knock it down to 8 at the most

the perimeter web on the inside could get trimmed a bit too, 5-6mm would be more than enough i'd say

have you got the "latest" issue of streetfighters mag? there is a thing in there about custom triples
it mentions something about designing them so that the forks snap off first

that might give you a basis for some analysis, what a big tube in there to simulate the fork legs and then push on the ends of em til they want to break

want me to email a STP file of the franks racing upper i have? be a nice reference

What Fimpy says about the bands goes. Roly's 750 has fat bands and they look too big against standard forks (imho). If you're planning to beef up the forks you could be ok.

As for the slits. The tighter the better...or was that butter is better..? :D

Revised Images - Lemme know what you think. I'm not sure if I'm happy with the design as yet.

not bad, i have the net at home now so i send you that stp file tonight

can you work some holes into it for headlight and gauge mounts?

zx12argh
27-05-2008, 05:32 PM
If you could send that through to me that would be grous mate.
I've got the moto mini guages so I'm working them into the bar mounts themselves. I looked at working a bracket into the yokes then decided against it as it wouldn't work great with the light I have and if i ever change head light then I may have bolt holes left in my yokes.

are the clamping areas gunna hit the tank on steering lock?

i made mine .15 oversize on the fork holes and was a bit big so i would go for .07 when i do another set.

i think mine were 7mm around the fork.

don't forget about the steering lock tabs or whatever you have on your kawaka's.

Yupp thats why the bottoms have that ugly V shape cut out. I still have to source material - I've constrained myself to 50mm stock at the moment.

I've made mine 0.1 oversize so I may reduced that a bee's dick.
Thanks guys. I think I'm going to tool around with them a bit more until I am totally happy with the design.

have you checked out what the bike looks like with the gauges coming off the bars?
i found it made them stick up too much, mounted mine forward of the upper triple. New gauges im putting on are going to be even more down/away from the bars

sent through the other one too, have fun with it (though its not that detailed, just a dummy i knocked up)

Not yet - I've still to mock up the risers. But I plan to do pretty much what you've got there. The guages only measure about 1.5cm by 6 cm at the most so they should be easy to stash :D
