A couple of the blokes where I work are HD nuts one bloke has a mate who just bought a S&S 124ci crate motor, he claims it will have 180 rwhp and will eat any jap crap on the road!!!! I fail to see how a carbie fed pushrod twin can make that sort of rwhp??? I fail to see how it can push the weight past any 1000cc sports bike??? Am I wrong??

No its bullshit.
Harleys are the most expensive bike going to make hp.
180 has got to be almost 174cubes.

Besides they are torque motors. The cant rev high enough and would need some serious forced induction or NOS to get to 180.

Most harleys with big cube motors still strain for 120+

Naaah, you gotta be wrong mate! people don't pay $14000 for bullshit!! do they??? ha ha ha ha!!! You can't tell these blokes anything, one of them saw the US HD v-rod pro stock drag bike racing on foxtel (it won meeting)and gave me shit because it beat the suzi's but didn't, wouldn't or couldn't understand that the (suz) motors are based on a 20 odd years old design to start with!!

$14000....fuck me! spend $14000 on a jap bike motor and watch his balls shrink. Jap crap hey? Anything that's cheaper, faster AND A SHIT LOAD MORE FUN must be crap. He can keep his Hardly Keepupson!

quote:he claims it will have 180 rwhp
Only if they turbo it, S&S I think only claim 130hp
Full Drag trim revving to insane piston speeds you would be spending a lot of money to get to 150-160hp. 180hp would need drag fuel and
13.5:1 compression and serious head work. And with the amount of money spent you could have turboed two 500hp+ Busa's
No way they could have a street-able carbed 180hp engine where as you can get a Jap or Euro bike of the floor with almost that much power
for as much as The S&S motor and mods

I did a dyno show at a gang club house last year .. put my bike on and got 97hp so the MCstarts the call to show these japs how its done.... so a big block harly gets on ( it was meant to be the fastest of the group ) and bang 60 something hp... the guy paid nealy 20 large for the motor ..
Those guys will tell you anything tomake them feel betterabout spending so much for so little .. challange him to a drag

Funny, I used to work with a guy who was harley mad. I invited him to countly rides and told him when bike drags were on and he never once showed up, he alway seemed to have "something on".

Isn't that why they now have 'torque shootouts'....'cos their bhp is soooo pathetic for the engine size ?

Gotta admit though quite a few of the fastest bikes in the official drag racing are Hardlys

Jappas can't increase their crank spacing and on a Harley it doesn't matter
I think top fuel Harleys are just over 2.8 litres So on nitro thats a fair smack in the arse
Mind you Sharky most top fuel Kwakas are lucky to have the cam cover as original.

Any Harley (or the like) pulling 180hp (and for $14K his AIN'T) is an unridable pig.

That ain't my usual redkneck, loudmouthed, bigotted, shit-stirring, anti Humpty carry on either:D.

That comes from one of the best Harley tuners in the business - Pulford in CBR.

Top fuel hardley's are NOT harley's.
They are ALL hand built individually designed V-TWIN huge capacity engines.
Almost all of the top fuel v-twins running over here run Aussie built engines.[:0]
A perfect example of this is the engines run by the Ashelford brothers from perth.
Their DAD designed & builds their engines, not a harley part to be seen.[8D]
As for the Pro Stock argument, the Suzuki's dominated for so long that NHRA penalised them HUGELY with extra weight & performance restrictions trying to make it a level playing field.
They fucked up & went too far & now the v-rods & buells are beating them regularly.[:I]
Note also that one of the harleys is ridden by Andrew Hines,,,,,read "Vance & Hines"
As for this other piece if shit pulling 180 RWHP tell him fromm me that he is an absolute FUCKWIT & has no fucking idea.[:o)]

I'm going to wear my HD shirt today

Don't hate them...pity them...They're all caught up in the propaganda...

What I'd like to know is can the average HD "rider" handle 40 or so hp ? Most of the ones I've seen can't travel at under 20 without dragging their feet or is that a substitution for dragging their knuckles when the walk ?

I dare say a Softail could out perform a 20 year old clapped out VT-250......well maybe it depends

Fatgit

Come on Blade, there is no way on earth that a 20 yr old VT250 could out perform a new softail, them softails can pull tree stumps outa tha groun' like no other.

We are talking about agricultural competitions aren't we?

:D

I dunno...if you picked up the VT and started running.....

Fatgit

Dunno if you wanna do that, if it's at one of those competitions it'd probably be on fire already :D

A good mate of mine loves his HD's. Until recently he had a shovel. He's the first to admit that they are unreliable, over priced, slow and all round SHIT.

He now rides a Honda.

I seem to recall the limited edition S&S 145" FI motor was touted as 180 hp but that would be crank HP and probably shooting a little high anyway.
Those S&S motors do throw out some stick, but I'm sure a 124" crate motor won't put that out.

Righto people here's the formula- 124cu=120hp+head/valve work + custom grind cam + trick 3 needle S@S carb + tuned length exhaust = 180HP at the CRANK NOT RWHP!!! so thats the new story! bloke still reckons it'll eat jap bikes and the mechanic say's it will be an absolute pig to ride but owner doesn't care 'cause it'll have 180HP!!!! (at the crank) and eat jap bikes!!! It took the last week of piss taking to get the bloke so revved up he called the mechanic for the "specs" !!!

10.1 @ 134mph with an S&S 124 and a dose of nitrous up it's arse.
But in the world of HD, getting plenty of power is only part of it, There's also the follow on driveline effects on standard clutches, trannie's and drive belts and this bloke has wrecked them all.
I'm hardly in a position to say anything about how much someone spends their bike, but I wouldn't do it when there's so much cheap and easy performance available.
But what the fuck, it's their money, fucken good on 'em. They're all bikes right ?

If the bloke with this motor used it like this it would be worth every cent but all it will be used for is burnouts "club" rides and cruising the esplanade in summer. He used to ride it into work sometimes when it had 100ci evo, start bike up at 4pm to go home, 4.05pm out front smoking it up bouncing off rev limiter!!! This motor lasted about 6 months before the valves stretched and it started/smoking using oil, he then had it rebuilt has barely ran it in and now has sold it to buy 124ci.
