View Full Version : Swing arm linkages and ratio's

This is stock '98 R1 set up showing upper & lower shock mounts and s/arm spindle position.

This is using the stock top mount on the FJ frame.

So now the question...
Am I better off making a longer link arm to reach my nearest suitable frame mount or extending the frame mount out to the link arm ?
Or should I move the upper mount to make the shock more vertical as per R1 ?
Or will it make little difference ?
I actually have another of the ali triangle bits that goes on the R1 arm. With a bit of work it could bolt to the frame and would reach the link arm.

moving my linkages 10mm moves my tail height 125mm.Try and stay close to your original ride height as varying makes a huge difference to handling by shortening your wheel base and raising your ride height.dont mount your tail unit till u get your ride height established so you can get your tail levels flowin with your tank.

The most important factor is keeping the R1 linkage in its original position and arc relative to the R1 arm it looks like if you cant move your top mount get a shorter shock the swingarm looks like it could be lowered a bit more and that would bring the dog bones closer ( I know its only a mock up Sharky) 12.5 degrees swingarm angle is what I like on old school bikes more modern bikes with a better chain run can probably go more.

Thanks for the input fellas.
I'm going to give it ago as is making a quick mount to locate the dog bone...mainly so I can move the bike and get it onto the hydraulic bench.
