R1 front end into K model GSXR, can it be done?

Hi all,

I have a K model 7/11 GSXR with telescopic forks that I am looking to upgrade to USD's. Have been looking at a swap with L model forks but also have access to the front end of a 05 R1 (Trees, forks, rotors, brakes, wheel, lines etc).

Could the combination of L model trees and R1 forks (for example) work without major engineering or am I better off keeping it simple and swapping for L model USD's.

Treat it like putting a late gsxr front in.the R1 and gsxr are very similar,i put a 97 gsxr frontend in my R1 for a while (waiting on R1 parts)
only about 4mm difference in width.

It's just a quick headstem swap, will prob need to put a small weld in the bottom. Don't put the forks in the gsxr clamps. There is a slight difference and you'll fook the forks. I have a spare R1 02 lower clamp with a gsxr headstem if you want it.

Seifer, that would be sweet if I could get the R1 clamp w/GSXR stem. Would be happy to fix you up for what its worth! Great to hear that this conversion may be fairly straight forward.

Straight forward it is, cheap it prob won't be with the rest of the parts. Guess no front end set is cheap tho.

just brought the same parts as you,cant wait for em to turn up,i think im lucky that these forks will fit in my m model yokes if not ill just get the stems swapped,post a pic when you've fitted them will ya

Thanks to Seifer I now have a lower R1 clamp with GSXR Stem. Thanks Mate, you are a legend, love these forums! Still keen to fix you up for your trouble, I also own my own signwriting business so if you need any custom computer cut decals for any make and model bike let me know, I can make them to any size (the cutter is 1.3m wide and does up to 30m long!) and have heaps of cool vinyl such as chrome, colour changers and metallics plus 40,000 logos for everything automotive.

ADZ250, will keep ya posted on the progress and any dramas that may yet occour.

Its actuall a 2005 GSXR 750 tail with the rear cover (behind the seat) from the 89 K. Still needs a bit of work to fuse it together but it does the trick. Also making a custom undertail so as to increase storage space (gotta be able to stow a few brews for long runs, and short ones come to think of it). Wasnt into the bulky original stuff so it had to go, as is the front end. The pic is of the new 2002 gsxr 1000 front end that is about to be painted and mounted (just waiting for GSXR 1000 bracket from states). All up with the R1 front end and modified fairings plus the vance and hines programmable CDI I have waiting to go on she should look like new model , go like new model but keep the soul and charater of the original. Single sided swing arm is also on the wish list, anyone got a spare?

Don't mean to sound like a scab, but if you're not using the discs & calipers, after your upgrade, would you be interested in selling ?

Bladehunter, you are more than welcome to the calipers and discs, even the front rim if u need it as I will be using the R1 rim.

Cool to hear people like the track i am on with this project, Also have planned swapping the old switches with the R1's, adding an acewell digital tacho mounted close to the top of the screen (so as not to have to look down as much), I made a CNC machine to make custom parts/dash for it. Also have GPS on my k-jam phone and have made a mount for that also. Plus will be installing a rear view camera and tft touch screen for that full tech fitout. Stay tuned, some may be wondering if this is all pipe dreams (well maybe a few pipes went into it!) but this is not my first project, more like my seventeenth (if thats a word).

The pic attached is of my 71 Celica, the list of mods fills a page or two and is still climbing. Some include - WRX STI cross drilled, slotted and vented discs, RX7 4 Spot calipers, eibach coilovers, Rear dics brakes, 1600 yamaha twin cam head on 2ltr block (= 11.5-1 compression), Twin 45mm webers, custom stainless mandrel bent exhaust, 6 point roll cage, electic mirrors, electric windows, reverse sensors, dvd, 5.1 surround sound, in dash 7in touch screen, yada yada yada.

I also have a RA28 hatch back model that has been acid dipped and primed ready for a full build, just need 48hrs in the day and it would all be done in no time. Projects, projects, oh yeah, and then there's the hovercraft...

Yes, it is real. Tornado class 2 seater with a cuyana 350cc two stroke ultralight engine. 70 kph over land, water, ice, swamps, even has a altitide sensor to adjust the mix so u can use it in the snow. Damn eBay, had to ban myself for a while after I got this, the driveway is chockas.

Cheers Seifer, my younger bro just bought a 75 mini and we are going to do the union jack on the roof for that. The celica is actually getting "wrapped". The CBR 600 pictured that I did (mates bike, let me go to town on it with my designs) explains it better than words, still nailing the design down but its gonna be craaaazy.

Cheers, I actually was lucky in a way that these CBR's have fairings that cover the frame and give you a good solid area to work with. My GSXR will be a different story but nothing that can't be sussed out prior in Photoshop.

So, tell me about this sticker wrapping bizzness.
I was looking at it on a bike at the last race meeting we were at & it looked like a full custom airbrush job to me but the owner told me that it was a sticker. I didn't have time to go into details at the time, so what's the John Dory?

OK turbokat, heres the process.

First take a shot of the vehicle in question
Load it into photoshop and make the file the same size as the real thing (ie 200cm long bike = 200cm wide p/shop file.) this will make it a 1.1 when it goes to the printer. Setup your design making note of vents and other things that will be an issue later on.

Second is the printing, the vinyl used is specific for this application, higly conformable and top of the line quality. A solvent inkjet printer is required, my friend business has a $45,000 Roland 540sx which is the bomb and pretty much industry standard for these applications.

Third is the laminating, a thin film that is applied to the print to protect it from UV fading and toughens up the whole thing while remaining conformable. Give you about 5 years of protection in Australia conditions. A special machine does this thats worth about $5k.

Then comes the installation, a specialized procedure using a heat gun and several application tools has to be followed in order to get the best results, this is where the practice comes in, especially on complex curves and corners.

Then you stand back, go that looks sweet and then wonder what the next one could look like. Will out do an airbrush job for detail any day.


P.S. The other side of the fire bike (cbr 600 pictured earlier) is ice, for a bit of contrast.

Its massive overseas and getting bigger here, the vinyl is also designed to come off with heat and only leaves about 10% residue when removed, even after years of being on there, and that residue can be removed easily with isopropyl alcohol. Ideal for leased vehicles.

Allrighty then, as I was anticipating technical difficulties have arisen.

The issue is that the 2002 R1 lower triple I have from seifer is a different offset to the upper 2006 triple. Just wondering what the best course of action is.

Considered getting a 2002 upper triple but am afraid it will change the offset for the 06 R1 wheel and brake calipers.

Watto was kind enough to send me a link to a US company that makes a bearing that gets around the 30mm 25mm differnce in the headstem problem which would allow the use of the current triples, but looking closer I have noticed the R1 bearings are round and have a groove to accommodate them and the GSXR ones are roller, not sure if this is a big issue but hoping for some advice before acting. About $50-$60 for that delivered isnt a problem but just wondering what the best bet is.

Any advice would be great, thanks.

Got the new front end on, have decided to get the stem swapped from the 02 R1 triple to the 05 and get the bushing to fit the top bearing, seems the easiest way forward.
