Nothing too exciting yet...but off to a good start.
R1 s/arm fitted with clearance for a couple of spacers to align the chain.
Next step is to get the brace welded back on the arm.
And I won a cheap front wheel of evilbay. Just need the forks now.

Slowly but surely getting the shock mount sorted...having just one good hand makes it sooo easy.:(
Managed to cut down, grind and drill out a sleeve for the lower shock mount...only burnt my fingers once.[:0]
I'm actually beginning to like the look of the whole 'Lateral frame concept'...the big rail going up front of headstock.Might not chop it off after all
Hopfully winning some R1 forks soon in the usofa.
Might see if an R1 tank will fit.[}:)]

Been checking a few measurements..Rake is the same as stock R1. Forks have been dropped through the yokes to the same length as r1 forks.
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/90177473748966.jpg

And with the help of paintshop I worked out exactly the same shock & linkage position. S/arm is at same angle.
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/90177473730467.jpg

The wheel base is the same as the XJR, just looks longer... so it should all work ok....I hope.....

Got the upper mount sorted today...tried to leave it stock and work around it but it wasn't gonna happen.
So one adjustable bracket thingy later..
I have cut the mount off the scrap frame and with a piece of 3mm wall box section made up a connector bracket. The idea being once its welded up properley and powder coated it should look like factory.

It could be the angle of the photo but the wheel base looks mega long in this pic, should help keep the front wheel from pointing skyward on the drag strip hey.

Next job on the list was checking the chain alignment. Luckily I had a brand new chain & f/sprocket in my box of R1 goodies from ebay.
And 'voila' perfect first time. No adjustment needed...how fookin lucky is that....got to love those 'lil men at Yamaha :D

So spurred on by my luck I measured the visible damper rod and after adding 10mm for luck made a strut to suit.

sharky
27-04-2008, 09:56 PM
[xx(] Of all the great pics you've put up.....and you suggest that one to me.....
Been working on the tank idea today.
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/63471534517679.jpg

Covered the frame/engine with an old sheet and then used expanding foam to cover the area. Once set I got stuck in with the electric carving knife. (Tip. Dip the blades in acetone occasionally...cuts better)
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/63471534511829.jpg

Tomoro I will get the shape sorted and start turning it into a plug for a fibreglass mould.
The idea is that once I have the cover moulded I can then cut the foam down to form the fuel cell shape, knowing it has to fit under the cover.[^]
Oh, and I have won R1 forks & triples off evilbay :D

Hey Russ,

Is that the stuff that's used to block up holes in the side of houses etc to stop bugs getting in?

sharky

Yes mate.

Large
28-04-2008, 10:03 AM
Does it hold its shape alright when you're cutting/sanding it?

sharky
28-04-2008, 11:03 AM
Yes mate, once its set its like that 'oasis' stuff for plants.
If you are doing a big lump do it in stages. My 'tank' was 2x 750ml cans applied 2 days apart. If you don't wait, you start cutting and find a goey uncured mess in the middle. And trust me, it sticks like shit to a blanket. Acetone removes the gooo or leave it to cure and then peel of unwanted 'splats'
Once you start a can, finish it. From experience over the years, I have found the cans seal up pretty quick.
Once it cures in the application tube, thats it.
And remember it swells to about 3-4 times the applied size.

http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/63471686055980.jpg

I have used the foam as a base and cut and taped flat plastic panels to get a tank idea.
As I have 2 sheets of 2mm ali plate lying around I am going to use those to make the cover. I can cut/bend/weld that easy enough at home, with the advantage of being able to powder coat it later.

sharky
28-04-2008, 08:37 PM
This is too easy...offered up the R1 footpeg hangars today...2 threaded holes in just the right spot. They're gonna be real rear set but thats how I like 'em.
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/63471866320715.jpg

Added a couple of scoops to the tank as well. To prevent heat build up the tank cover is going to have mesh covered vents to get air flow and also supply fresh air to the carbies.
Junked the 'ram air' idea...not enough space without getting messy or losing fuel capacity.

http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/63471866329043.jpg

sharky
30-04-2008, 05:22 PM

Got my new R1 forks & clamps today but they will have to wait.
Its a simple job of swapping stems but therein lies the problem.:(

"Steering Stem – Yamaha sportbikes used the same diameter steering stem for many years, from approximately 1987 thru 1995. However, starting in 1997, Yamaha inexplicably changed the diameter of their steering stems to a slightly (approx. 0.005”) larger stem diameter. I know this to be true for both YZF750 and R1’s. This means that the old stems are now a loose fit instead of a press fit into the YZF750 lower triple tree. This most direct remedy for this problem is to weld and machine and appropriate stem."

So as theres no rush I am going to look for another lower yoke/stem and get that one sorted whilst keeping a movable rolling chassis.

Decided to start again with the tank..first up cardboard mock up. Trying to get more of an angular look to it. There will be some mesh panels in the cover as well as the 2 inlet scoops on the sides. These to a, feed the airbox and b, keep cool air flowing under the civer...these old girls get a bit warm.

hey sharky

with your stem problem, i had a similar prob when I fitted an early gixxer stem into later model clamps - took it down to my local engineering shop and they did a process called metal spray - basically built it up to what it needed - cost me about $50

sharky
22-05-2008, 06:14 PM
Cheers Watto, I'll look into that one.
These are the filters from Huey'. Needed to use the stock air box intake rubbers to get them to fit, will get something better sorted...main thing was they fit.
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/53084923644607.jpg

Decided to go with the stock subframe rails (cut/shut/welded)as they were so close to right and I am going to make my own tail unit. The weight difference was soo slight between them and a subframe from an R6 that it wasn't worth the bother to use ali.

Bad news for this project...[V]...
Been doing a lot of thinking and this w/end at the Winters has confirmed my doubts.:(
I could make the 1200 competetive but at the expense of my other love..scuba diving.[V]
To finish this project with a tuned motor, trailer etc is just going to cost waay too much.
So,very reluctantly this one is dead before it lived.
On the up side, I am going to look at mono-shocking the XJR along with the R1 front end.....plus a few ideas that are forming in me 'ed [}:)]

I see it a choice between having a good strong XJR 'fighter that I can 'play' drag racer on at shoot-outs AND going diving...:)
or....
A fairly tidy road bike and a 'long way to go' drag bike and NO diving...:(

And been looking at these pics again...like the front end conv. but need something more radical.[}:)][}:)]

That's a shame Russ, you could compromise maybe, by making it a long term build (two years or so) and still dive but not as often.

sharky
08-06-2008, 10:31 PM
It always was going to be a long termer mate....the reality is I cannot afford 2 bikes + diving equipment and costs.
If I don't have the FJ as a road legal I'll need a trailer..
I will still build a big bore motor out of the 1100 (cases need machining on both 11's and 12's for 1314cc).
I just have to be realistic...I can't have 2 expensive hobbies and a decent road bike...

sharky

Yeah, I'll be keeping the frame, engine and dummy tank but using the rest of the bits on the XJR. The 1200 lump will go in the xjr, the 11 will be kept for the big bore as and when...
I can also recoup some cash by selling the stock xjr stuff on evilbay (sure no-one on here would want Yam bits, aye TK ;))

At her feet was her footloose man

No, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

I saw her today at the reception

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want

And I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singing, "We're gonna vent our frustration
If we don't we're gonna blow a 50-amp fuse"
Sing it to me now...

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well you just might find
You get what you need
Oh baby, yeah, yeah!

I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda
My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me, and that was "dead"
I said to him

You can't always get what you want, no!
You can't always get what you want (tell ya baby)
You can't always get what you want (no)
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need
Oh yes! Woo!

You get what you need--yeah, oh baby!
Oh yeah!

I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her blood-stained hands

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want

& dripfeed it for a few years if you have to, it means you'll always have something to do!

Lots of thinkin goin on....before I make any rash decisions I'm gonna kick back and get back out on the road on the xjr...last rode on 8th april !!
Mono shocking/r1 f/end is gonna take a while and I'm itching to ride.

agree wholeheartedly with that.

however, don't sell of the project, just put it on hold and ride. one day you'll have enough cash to finish it! you never know with global warming+oceans rising+this diving caper. you might be onto something!
