I've just got this 89 gixxer to somewhere where I can strip it down and check it all out and I'm quite impressed how she runs and looks for a bike that's done a few kays. No leaks, oil is clean and sounds pretty good except for the noisy tappets. But I'm told that's normal on these things. Does anyone know if these have screw valve adjusters or shims?
Oh and it has a mussive flat spot around 8000rpm, almost like the bike turns off for a second then powers back on. The bike was running on 3 cyl when I picked it up but after a couple of minutes riding it seemed just came good, thinking it might have been on of the carbs playing up.....
Anyway bargain at $300 I say!!

Jesus $300...is that not missing a zero?
Tenth of the price of mine, same model (mine's nicer though and it's MINE;)).
How many K's?
I know what you mean about the flat spot to,except mine's a little lower down the range than 8 thou, more like 5500 to 6000.At 8000 the fucker comes on strong all the way to 13000.Anything between that happens very fast. That's a problem around Sydney however.I still wanna 1100 innit though,it'll be be more civilised:).

Nope that's it $300!
It's got 7000km's on the clock......may have clicked over zero once or twice, speedo hasen't worked for a while apparently.
Yeah would love 1100 in it and it might be a descent enough investment: $300 for bike $1500-$2000 for descent motor....total cost for 7/11 = $1800-$2300, give or take.
We'll wait and see i guess.

Thanks! Yeah, I've got to get it all registered first. Then let you know about the exhaust.

I used to have one of these and it used to eat plugs fairly regularly.
Not a miss, just went 'off'. Set of plugs fixed it every time.
Good luck with a good buy.

Livewire: It has brand new plugs in it, so should be a matter of checking the carbs I'm thinking.

Ok, So I pulled the Valve cover off and found that it has screw type adjusters, which I have found to be a pain in the arse!.....without the right tools. The screw to adjust the valve has a square end and is tiny! I tried a 4mm socket and it's to big. Does anyone know of some tricks or should I just go out and buy a smaller socket? I've used long nose pliers but it's fiddly and hard to get the adjusters at the right clearances.

Mate, the screw & locknut setup is an absolute gift to adjust compared to the shim under bucket arrangement. Don't use a socket because the adjusters are square not hexagonal, use the correct size open ended spanner (or a 4" shifter if you're really desperate)

Have a look about at bunnings etc. I've seen square socketed screwdrivers.

Yeah had a look at supercheap today and the smallest thing they have is 4mm which is to big. I'll check out Bunnings tommorrow. A hex socket has parrallel sides which means a square head will fit and work.
Thanks

Hey Spiro - if you ever decide to take out your cams, grab a big flat punch and give the cam cap bolts a good whack with a hammer before you try to undo them.

Otherwise, you'll be asking us about helicoils.....:(
