It has been a while since I worked on a project again, and I am wrapped to get my hands on an 89 Gixxer 1100 oil burner.

Instead of a fighter I'm thinking of restoring it but with a few upgrades (wheels, front end, suspension) and paint.

First thing though will be to get it running and registered.

I will post up some pics tonight

I think these are 38 mm carbies, any recommendations on which ones will be better?

These were in a box, some kind filter for the Carbies I think. (I reckon they would be a pain?)

Plan for this week is to get it running, fix some bugs and get it inspected and registered.

Looks great Rod. carbies for the older oil burner bikes are easier to Tune than the W models I have read. But if this is a resto, than run the airbox. The panels will need it as the corner panel on the frame is held by it.
can't wait for this progress to continue ;)

Yea, run the airbox Rod, it will be much easier. Those pods look like they are shit and would be a nightmare to sort, probably why they are not on there now. Are they singles as well? Even worse if so.

The 40mm carbs were off the 750. The 1100 ran 36mm as standard as far as I remember.

38mm.

the slabbies had 34 or 36 which were good down low but ran out of puff up the top. The 40's were too big, the 38's were in the goldilocks zone, just right.

Also, I've you change your mind on the resto, I have all the drawings to mod the Ø38mm carbs for BOOOOOOSSSSTTTTT!!!111!!1!

Blue slip has ben done, so this is my thoughts:

I want to replace front end ith K5.

I want to purchase some Carozia rims.

I need advice on rear shock?

So not your typical restoration but I am hoping to build a Slingshot with modern
running gear, Thoughts?

K5 front would be sweet! Carozia Rims, dam they would be nice. Rear shock, all depends if your going swap out the rear swing arm for a K5 and try to run the K5 rear as well?

Just purchased K5 front end, as you can see in the first pic there is some damage to the preload adjuster cap. Anyone know where I can get replacements cheap?

Nice one Rod, as for replacement preload, so another Ebay search in the USA mate, that's your best bet.
Cool plate, but may they rip everyone now with these plates.

Yep, that's the classic mate. I have only heard of one bloke (Mad Mundy) claiming he could remove the airbox without removing the carbs, but I've never managed and I wouldn't suggest it either without damaging something.

I don;t have a photo to hand of the fuel lines, but I reckon Supercharger might. I got my airbox out without taking the carbies off.... hacksaw is you friend
Hard to put back in though :)

I wanted the flexibility to compensate for upgraded swingarm and difference in shock length.

Original shock is 312mm
K51000 shock is 319mm

both have a shock stroke of 70

I have a k2 1000 in my 750 and I'm using a 180/60 rear tyre to be honest I love the way it feels

so you are 60mm lower at the front, and 7mm higher at the back. might be a bit twitchy.

7mm extra length in the back shock will be more at the wheel...

Might be time to order some fork extensions from Extreme?

My guess is that they should be fine, original fork stems sat about 40mm higher through the top yoke and I will have the K5 fork stems sitting flush.

OK, I need your thoughts, my original swingarm pivot bolt is a smaller diameter than the 05 pivot bolt.

However, the threaded ends of the o5 pivot bolt is too small a diameter for the 89 frame.

I am thinking of getting a sleeve made for the 89 pivot bolt so it fits the o5 swing arm but unsure who can make one.

Contact Ben, he may have the old drawings from when I did my swingarm swap for the 7/11. He made me the double threaded sleave for the frame to new pivot bolt.

He didn't like them as he said around town they were a handful - even Hagaar turned down a set after talking to Supercharger. Only good for flat chat / drag racing. I don't want to ruin your high mate, that is not the intention, but just thought I'd let you know.

Hey Si, I was looking at that option as well, but have read what you said and will scrap that idea. I have however seemed to work out a solution for the W 1100 with the standard rubber stacks off the carbs with filters over the tops. But thats another story for my thread.
Going to be interesting Rod with the direction you are taking this bike. Looking forward to further updates.

Yep have bought them new, As this build won't be my daily rider I'm hoping that they supply what I'm after.

I have flat slides for mine too it seems we are doing the same sort of thing I am doing a 89 oiler for special occasions and have a gsxr 1000 for a daily ride.

I recognise those discs and carriers. Some of Ben's Buzzsaw disks from back in the day. I still have mine. ...and those carbon fibre carriers used to look great on Chris' bike; should suit yours down to the ground.

So they are carbon - was trying to work out if they were, or if it was an artifact of the photo being taken with a potato. Has Anyone put any mileage on the carbon carriers? I'd be concerned about them flogging out at the buttons very quickly, and heat softening off the resin...

They were on Chris' bike for years. I rode to the GP with him so they weren't shy of doing the K's either.

They are almost the last part of my 711 that i still have.
I was getting carozzerias for it, so asked ben to make some lightweight buzz saws out of carbon to match the carro spoke pattern. He said too hard.
He called me weeks later and asked if i still wanted them, said I wasnt sure i had the cash anymore, he told me he figured out how, and he had already made them. I found the cash.
they weigh just over 1kg per rotor.

i overheard a conversation at a bike show once saying that it couldnt be real carbon, I m ust have vinyl wrapped them.
Better on a bike than in my garage, numbers.

So using a can of rattlecan black did a very rough mock up of the bike to see how it will look black on black.

Not long now and soon it will be off to Lyntonland to be put on the Jig of straightness.
