So the Mrs has finally come to her senses a few months back and realised that the VFR lack power to be god fun. With the new front end I put in it handles and feels a million times better, but it lacks the punch of an inline 4 sports bike. We'll be selling the VFR but she started to keep an eye out for an 04 R1 at a good price and finally after a few months one came up that we wanted to go and check out. I wanted to reduce (crazy I know) the number of bikes to actually make some room first as it's getting a bit over-crowded

Pics are a few months old, but you get the picture, lol. The CBR250RR is pretty much done now so that will be selling soon and the GSXR600 has found a new home too.

Anyways, picked this baby up about a month ago off a guy who is your typical insurance statistic and the reason why premiums are so how. What do I mean...

R1 was his first bike, just waitied long enough till he could buy it.
Crashed the bike near his brothers house
had no gear on at the time of the crash
Lost the back end, panicked and took a handful of front brake and lost the front
Hurt his shoulder in the accident and is now 'Off' bikes
Had negotiated a higher excess to be able to get lower premium, meaning he didn't want to fork out the excess to repair. - His loss, our gain.
Inspected the bike and all the damage is purely cosmetic and a broken front fairing stay, so was a no brainer and loaded it onto the trailer

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Sarah%20Project%20R1%20fighter/9D25B37F-B675-4891-815F-876FD1B2A57C_zpslbbmpipx.jpg (http://s770.photobucket.com/user/wackyrider/media/Sarah%20Project%20R1%20fighter/9D25B37F-B675-4891-815F-876FD1B2A57C_zpslbbmpipx.jpg.html)

Finally had a chance this weekend to start stripping the bike down and removing the excess weight...

Damage was to the RHS of the bike

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Sarah%20Project%20R1%20fighter/E03E870F-1E68-426B-84B9-A48454D86E7D_zpsmfbyv2hg.jpg (http://s770.photobucket.com/user/wackyrider/media/Sarah%20Project%20R1%20fighter/E03E870F-1E68-426B-84B9-A48454D86E7D_zpsmfbyv2hg.jpg.html)

The Oggy knobs too the grunt of the slide so made sure to check the frame when we inspected the bike. All good, just a damaged knob

Will be at least a 6 month project, deadline from the Mrs is that it needs to be done before the wedding so we can have both the fighters on the day for pics. I can live with that....

So let it begin.... again...

Nice find mate, will be watching this thread with interest as i plan on doing an R1 in a few months time, especially how you hide the wiring & what bar size / rise you go, looking forward to seeing it come together

Downside is the insurance premiums though

there seems to be a fair bit of extra cables up the front end to run a couple of headlights, so will see what i end up doing here. might chop it up a bit and just fit a simple plug depending on the headlight we go for.

Oh and great score. The upside being he didn't claim on insurance which makes you the winner!

So 2 months on and not much has happened. I promised this wouldn't be the fastest build. But I do have a deadline that this needs to be completed with paint for the wedding in July... so best get cracking.

I have been fortunate enough to be allowed into the shed of wonders at Ozzy's place, so no reason to delay now.

Subframe off, fairly happy with the minimal amount of wiring that Yamaha have in the subframe which is awesome news for me.

And good old Jesus holding up the new tail to be grafted on so we can get an idea of what it will look like...

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx348/wackyrider/Sarah Project R1 fighter/B14A8CBE-6406-4400-B009-BDB932BB55E9_zpsmrykmxdm.jpg (http://s770.photobucket.com/user/wackyrider/media/Sarah Project R1 fighter/B14A8CBE-6406-4400-B009-BDB932BB55E9_zpsmrykmxdm.jpg.html)

This will be the approximate placement, which means that the subframe will be slightly extended (as they are a short unit) and some of the void underneat will be filled in with the undertail pipes

The tail is wider than the tank but I think we can make it work as the lines and angles of the tail match the tank. Once mounted then the handlebar and choice of headlight i think will tie it all in together.

On my K4 Gixxer the steering damper is at the bottom. With the headlight I used that actually worked better for me

Looking good Jules. I hate where the steering dampener is on these bikes. Right in the way of the headlight!
I'll be either moving to the bottom or pissing it off completely. My 7/11 hasn't got one and I've not really had issues with out it.

Spent some more time this week in the shed of wonders pondering at the tail set up.

We've mocked it up with a quick extension for the lower mount. final mount will be 3mm shorter to 65mm. Top mount we will look into after that.

The lines seem to work and the tail angles seem to compliment the tank nicely too. From the front the tail also doesn't seem like it sticks out from the tank

22-12-2016, 11:55 AM
Looks good Jules, what pipes you going to run? undertail still?

wackyrider
22-12-2016, 04:03 PM
Yeah that's the plan. It came with a set of GYTR pipes so plan is to get them to sit well with the Duke tail

Gix11
23-12-2016, 10:41 AM
You keeping the clip-ons? That's what makes the bodywork look larger. A set of wide bars would slim it down heaps.

No going for bars on this one. The CB will be with clip-ons

Been a while since I've posted an update on Sarah's bike. spend the end of the year and beginning of this year finishing off reno's on a house and have moved onto a few acres now which is awesome.

I'd love to say I pulled my finger out and got stuck in but work's been a bitch lately as usual so Mr Ozzy has worked his magic in the Shed of wonders.

If you look at the last pic from the back of the bike, the lines and angles of the tail follow the lines on the tank really well. Couldn't have planned a better combination if we tried. This bike is gonna look sexier than the Gixxer.

The pipes are the GYTR's that came with the R1 an we haven't had to modify these at all, which both surprises me and makes me happy. Lynton's made up brackets welded to the sub-frame and machined up some Poly-Urethane bushes

Bodywork has come back from a local airbrush guy and i'm pretty happy with the result.

It's a gloss black with Matt black highlights. Lines on the tail matching the original Duke lines but then transitioning to straight line on the front guard. the headlight is straight gloss black but all gels together with the tank / tank cover being gloss black and (plastic) matt black

Oh yeah, and the knuckleduster in matt black on the solo seat cover is just.... why not
