So I found a guy selling a complete set of R1 race fairings which included a race tail and uses the stock seat.
Pick the lot up for $150 today. I plan to use the front 1/2 of the race tail and back 1/2 of the fighter tail to blend them to each other. Just have to decide on pipes, because this will determine the length of the tail end.

Once I decided on the pipes, I will start on the tail end and really get this thing to where I would like it.

So I have ordered my new end cans from the UK, I decided on the Black Widow 230mm stainless steel units.
They are round and have a massive outlet. Best part is they come with a baffle if I decide to be civil.

Soon as they arrive I'll be updating this more often. The end of the cans decide where I'm modding the tail end.

I got to work today after an RDO on Monday and waiting for me what these lovely things!
Now just to start ripping the back end of the bike apart and create some change!

And to anyone looking at mufflers, this guy in the UK is fantastic. Fast shipping and great packing.
This muffler also looks great and should work well with my plans.
Pricing wasn't bad either and for a pair at $472.00 delivered, it was a bargain.

LKC73

Small set back last night. I discovered that the entry pipe into the stock muffler is not straight. So my plan to cut off the old muffler and slip these on has been thrown a spanner in the works. So I either have to get custom made link pipe or find a company that will supply a set. Oh the joys of a custom bike. Might even do something really crazy if I feel game.

I got some mid-pipes made for this bike by Delkivic on Thursday and Friday night I started to fit the up.
The first result wasn't placed where I wanted these pipes to finish. Pictured below.
http://i.imgur.com/KQO7hBT.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/CmYy6xM.jpg

So it did a lot of measure and cutting on different spots of the mid pipes because you just cant cut a heap off one end of these things. The result was a bit more to where I wanted it now. still could be tucked under a tiny pit more. Over-all though I took off 75mm out of the length mid-pipe.

I have also done some grilles for the air intake as I wasn't happy with just open frame. I also made a stone guard for the new radiator and now can finally run my ASF rad cap.

http://i.imgur.com/SvgO0gx.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/1vWCRZk.jpg

I wired up and placed 2 red LED lights just under the headlight glass and wired them into the parker loom.
This Idea was really for shit and giggles, but I dont mind them and they cancel out once the bike is started and the normal headlight is on.

http://i.imgur.com/gpUZ0gm.jpg

Next on the list is to start working on the actual tail unit itself to give me the finished result I am after. Stay tuned, that will be image heavy.

This is such a sweet build and gonna be a killer fighter!

Where are Delkevic based?

LKC73
04-06-2017, 07:43 AM
Delkevic is based in Queensland for the Australian office, Joe is the sales dude, very helpful.
Currently working on the tail and seeing what I need to do to get this working the way I want.
Pics will follow up very soon.

Today has been a rather big day for the R1. I have started on the tail work.
Please bare with me on this, some of it wont look tidy while in progress, but trust me it will look ok when its completed.
This pic is the tape up for measuring to narrowing the tail unit.

http://i.imgur.com/YMrqTXq.jpg

The next shot is how I joined it back up again, and re-fiber glassed the underside for now.

http://i.imgur.com/rzT4UVb.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/wsMTye5.jpg

As you can see from the bellow shot, the seat is snug to the side.

http://i.imgur.com/GnFepMl.jpg

here is the subframe mod, not much and will allow the tail to kick up the way I want.

http://i.imgur.com/8I52Xt4.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/5HpqsxG.jpg

And the tail, I know it looks ugly right now, but there is a tone of work left to do. So like I said, bare with me on this.

The tail section will be reshaped to follow the fighter tail end, and will flow better. By the way, the hump on these R1 tails are massive!

Is the rear of the tail and exhaust flush? Or is the length of the exhaust longer?

Yeah they do stick out just past the tail. If I finish the tail, and they don't look right, I will shorten the pipes again.
I just want to see how this tail finishes up first and than work on anything else.

LKC73
05-06-2017, 05:17 PM
So there has been a slight change of plan. After a lot of thought, I really didn't like the tail the way it was, and have started redoing it. It isn't kicked up like I had, and now lays flatter. Just something about this particular bikes shape that didn't agree with what I had. I'll snap some pictures soon. But it took new all day to rethink it and undo what I had started.

LKC73
08-06-2017, 04:54 PM
OK so as I said, I have changed my mind and gone and made the tail a bit flatter.
I actually like it more this way and can see the end result looking decent.

I got an idea to use filler foam from youtube, and placed some .5mm alloy plate over the area I wanted to shape.
This was held down by gaff tape and did the job. I have yet to fill smaller holes, and sand it down below the surface to lay over fibreglass. Once that is done I can then dig out the foam filler to allow the hollow section sit over the rear as it should. I am happy with the new progress, and should look much better.
The side and under side will then be taken care of and all tidied up before some bog and primer and than the final paint.

I know a good painter in your area I could recommend :p

I have 2 painters lined up for this bike already

Keep in mind that the angle is actually up in these pictures, because the filler is under the hump, once its out the tail will sit down on the subframe more.

LKC73
10-06-2017, 07:06 PM
I have given the filler a trim and did some more filler to some air holes in the tail. I then gave it a light sanding to shape it better and its turning up ok so far. My method maybe a little different to most, but the end result should be good.

http://i.imgur.com/PlLlicV.jpg

I also cut out the bottom of the filler foam as to get it on the rear for trial fit. Its looking that way i want so far.

http://i.imgur.com/unaUphC.jpg

I've laid about 5 layers of woven matting and resin on, will snap some pictures in the morning.

I've also found a tail light I would like to use. this unit fits on the opening at the back of the tail end. I'll just mold around the gaps and infill the gaps once it arrives.

LKC73
12-06-2017, 06:11 PM
Today has been a good day. Blocked back the fiberglass and the sides as well.
I made an under tray too and now just have to wait for the tail light to arrive.
this will be placed in the rear slot and molded to the rear.

I have a second small stop light coming, which I plan on putting into the undertray so I can have dual stop lights.
It wont be set up as a tail light, just a extra stop light.

The other thing I need to make is the new rear section of the sub frame to support the new tail end.
I have a plan, and it should be able to hold the rear of the tail from the underside. Which is good as I didnt want bolts on top of the tail section. Anyhoo, enough talk more pictures.

Just one question mate: is that the final tail piece or are you using it as a mold for a final fibreglass tail? If not, you are mixing fibreglass and plastic there yea? If so, I best warn you that plastic and fiberglass don't work together. They look great when finished and just sat there, but after a few rides (yea, not the first one or two that give you confidence), because they are different compounds and vibrate differently, they will start to crack apart where they join. I learnt this the hard way a long time ago and always warn anyone I see doing it, especially if they are going to get them professionally pained as well as the heartache isn't worth it. I had to create a full fiberglass mold by using the shaped template as a core and then doing another final fibreglass piece from the mold. It's a lot of work! The rule is to use just one substrate if you want it to work.

LKC73
15-06-2017, 02:52 PM
Hi Si,

I have read your view on the issue of fibreglass and plastic. It is all fibreglass though ;)
The tail end is a race tail that's in blue. This fools a lot of people in thinking its plastic by the pictures.

So all good mate, I learnt from your experience long time ago.

Gix11
16-06-2017, 10:02 AM
I thought it would be a bit of a rookie mistake for someone like you mate, but sometimes the smallest little things slip through the cracks and I'd hate to see your efforts go to shit if I didn't say anything.

LKC73
16-06-2017, 10:49 AM
I thought it would be a bit of a rookie mistake......

If I did make such a mistake, you are allowed to smash it over my head Si Hahaha...

I really should have sanded it all the way back to the very front so it wasn't blue.
The race tail is a woven matt fibreglass compared to the fighter butt end that's is kitten hair type glass.
Should have more updates over the weekend with pictures ;)

LKC73
20-06-2017, 09:38 PM
Back at it again over the weekend and carried on putting the new tail light in and glassing around it to fill the gap of the opening.
I've also made a small under tray and rear bracket to hold the back end of the tail up off the pipes. It was that short you wouldn't think it did much but it has made the tail so much more solid now. Im pleased with it and how this thing is starting to shape up.

Another weekend and another heap of work done. Spent some hours sanding, filling and repeat.
I have filled the the tail and the under tray and its now sitting in primer filler.
Leaving it to sink back for 48 hours then I'll give it a wet sand.
Here are some pic's.

Cheers guys, it is a huge effort when I sat and thought about how many hours I've done on this thing.
It has seen almost seen more hours in the tail than the rest of the bike combined.
It also has been a great learning curve for me on problem solving. I am now more confidant to give other custom parts a go.
Thinking about re-doing the dash mount is one that comes to mind.

Love it, Was it a challenge to get a nice straight edge?

Rod, it was a challenge because it wasn't straight to begin with. The R1 tail was off to the right, and so was the fighter tail end.
In saying that, the R1 subframe has a slight twist in it too, so nothing is straight on the back of this bike LOL.
From the riders seat backwards it was affected by the accident from previous owner.
