Hi Anita. Sarah and Loz were just riding this weekend with the guys. Maybe you could come along on the next one so you have at least two girls to ride with as well?

Do you get a discount on the BMW as I reckon it will cost a bit! From expercience (and I'm sure a few here will back up what I'm about to say), have you considered getting an older bike that you won't be so upset about dropping (as it's inevitiable with a first road bike)? The perfect starter bike for someone like you would be the SV650 to which you could do something this:

http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/showthread.php?9971-Suzuki-SV-650-1000

or if a twin is not your bag, then how about something like a CB400?

7700

Both are tried and tested motors and they are a fun bike to start on and pull apart.

Oh, and where's my manners?! - Welcome aboard!

Most SV650's aren't LAM's. Only the SU if you can find one.

they retail from $5,700, price rises as you get accessories of course . we get them next to nothing , unlimited warranty , never have to pay for a service :)

and theyre fantastic looking bike !!!! 7702

appreciate any advice and tips or tricks aswell :)

You won't be seeing too much of your father on rides Anita, we only see him disappearing into the distance at a very rapid rate

what's wrong with BMW

My mate is a trained BMW mechanic and had over 20 S1000R's on his books.

9 of them had leaky forks
2 had stalling issues
6 of them with OEM shocks no longer function, if any settings are chosen no difference is felt due to shock oil cooking
14 of them had/have clutch micro switch issues
11 of them constantly blow the headlight bulb
2 had failed quick-shifters
6 had farings stripped during riding
2 have injector failures
4 of were overheating due to faulty water pumps
3 had ABS issues due to heat related problems
7 of them have indicator issues
14 had to have the killswitch replaced
6 had to have the left side switch replaced due to faulty cruise control
all of them have air-filter issues as they don't seal properly
all of them have chains issues as the bikes comes with an extra link due to handling problems which in terms you need a new chain sooner
all of them have vibrating mirrors which are useless on speeds over 80kmh
all of them have damper issues

That was a while back.
Very few of his customers / my mates have one now.

Welcome Anita.

My R1200GS is 5 years old and I've racked up 100,000klms on it from new. A 6mm bolt broke on the rear mud guard a few months ago while bashing through a National Park. Thats the sum total of "issues" I've had with it.
I guess the S1000R is a lemon, but it would be an anomaly amongst all the other models.

Totally agree Nudie.
Most are solid and reliable.

Mates have had endless faults and recalls with the (very impressive to ride) S1000R and RR's.
Very different from the singles and twins, trying to compete in the high performance lightweight
Sportsbikes market.

That's pretty cheap for a new BMW. Single cylinder I see. Have you test ridden one yet?

Craig's daughter hey? If you end up riding like him then you won't be riding with girls for long (other than Huddo).

.

They are actually made by TVS Motor Company in Balgalore, India for BMW.

Doesnt have to be a bad thing.
Although it made by TVS not BMW, Plenty of Fords and Triumphs are built in Asia now
and to be fair they are fine. I think the Ford Everest is being built in China.

Just hope it's better built than the new Harley's made in India though.
