im going to have to drop into the exhaust place in the morning
the buell can is meant to have a springy sort of connection

hopefully i can just get some welded onto my header and use the springs
got it rigged up now with a hose-clamp holding onto the end of the springs

fimp,

just read the thread.. funny my can on the GSX did exactly the same thing, the guts just shot out.

nice kat.. where's the screen?

here is the can, its now lockwired off so it aint going nowhere [^]

booked in for next tuesday to get some little loops welded onto the headers for the springs

not sure of its meant to happen, but the tube that goes into the can is loose and it can slide in and out
so that means i have to use the springs and not just the clamps to hold the thing in

is that normal for this style of can?

oh, and i jacked up the headers while i was lockwiring so its taking the weight of the back end of the system

i went for a hoon this arvo and it all seems pretty stable now

its a tad loud though, oh well... [8D]

Fimp,

looks good.. by coincidence i was making a shorty RS3 for the GSX last night.

did you have to stuff about much to get a good angle on the exhaust?
mine shoots out off to the side and looks like crap at the moment, I figure i need to do some extra piping. to get the can facing the right direction.

on my can
i noticed the pipe that enters is rivetted to the internal pipe. these rivets had broken allowing the pipe to move.. yours may be doing the same?

Cheers

thats a buell pipe, previously of rexies kwak

he cut it down, so he probably fucked it up :D

sickboy
01-09-2006, 11:11 PM
If the pipe is a bit loose you could take your pipe to an exhaust centre and see if they can puff or pop it out a bit with their hydrolic thing until you get a nice tight fit and see if you can get some proper clamps too or maybe try slotting the end can bit that slots over the pipe.

fimpBIKES
01-09-2006, 11:43 PM
yeah, i think i have it covered

i machined up a spacer to cover the difference (inside of header is 60mm, outside of the cans pipe is 56mm) out of some 60 stainless round bar

and i have got slots in the headers at the end, i have it booked in for tuesday so i might get them to tack weld the stainless spacer to the pipe that comes out of the can
or flare the end of it out, either way is fine but obviously the latter is going to be better for flow!

then i should be able to crank right down on it and i wouldnt need the springs at all :D

and you wouldnt believe the trouble i had trying to get an exhaust clamp to get rid of the shitty hose clamps
i went to 10 places yesterday (supercrap, repco, rampage, bike shops and a few exhaust places)
nothing in that size, so i will need to order one in

that setup is entirely temporary

i might get a bit welded on the very front of the can too so that i can make up a bracket to do what the lockwire is doing at the moment

Jap bikes had quality rearsets in those days! Whats the plan fimp, will the Kat go once the TL is roadworthy? or are you attached to it now.

fimpBIKES
02-09-2006, 11:42 AM
ulimate setup at this point is a long and low bike, a short torquey bike and a van from the late seventies

the rearsets suck, they are rubber mounted or something
its pretty offputting

fimpBIKES

mmm, the old katana does smoke a bit

i have been told when u give it a handful a puff comes out the back
and if i am sitting at lights (this is my commuter now its back up and running) there will be a small stream of smoke coming out of the pod filters

i take it that this is a sign of worn rings?
or generally wear and tear on a 25year old donk...[xx(]

anyways, i want to start planning to get the engine freshened up
would this wiseco kit be about what i need?
K1168 - SUZ GS11 4V KIT 75MM-2953XG-4193M US$536.22

this only requires a bore and not a resleeve
the price is straight from the wiseco website

so how much would it generally take (in dollar figures) to get this installed?
i figure i have enough on my hands and i would rather focus my efforts on the chassis while the engine gets done
would AUD$1500 see me clear?
just want to start saving away, cos i think that this would be good to get done in the next 6 months or so

ps- that new can is FUCKING SENSATIONAL when u get on the gas out of a corner and let the revs wind up, i was having multiple eargasms riding the thing around this arvo [:X]

if that's the 18mm pin kit it's the one. See if Mundy or someone can get it here from Serco and you should be able to get it for about 550au-600au

While you're doing it get the head serviced about 350 +100 for new valve stem seals

Then you'll pay about 200 for the boring/honing

There might be a few more seals/orings you need for the head too...

03-09-2006, 09:50 AM
Weld the crank, brace the clutch, Carillo rods, 1100 EF cams (they're the same as the stage 1's for the Kats) dial'em in, larger valves (with a 3 face cut), gsx750 oil pump (higher flow/pressure) etc etc etc

BUT don't forget the fuggin oil cooler (and ef plate for front of motor), no working motor without one.

fimpBIKES
03-09-2006, 10:17 AM
geeez chalky, i just want to freshen it up
not trying to beat burt munro's record!!!

03-09-2006, 11:28 AM
If ya just wanna freshen it up, then pull the head/block off before ordering pistons etc, you may well get away with rings and a hone. Will have to do the head though, but may be no more than reseating the valves and bushes/seals. Check the gearbox while it's down though, from memory 2nd gear selectors takes a beating on the big Kat. While you've got the head apart you might as well get the camshaft sprockets slotted, so that you can dial them in.

sounds good mate

i figured if i am boring things out anyways the larger pistons are pretty reasonably priced
i have bigger problems at the moment though, she is currently sitting on the highway 50km from home

electrics just died after a high-speed burst...
im hoping its the main ignition fuse or something :(

fimpBIKES
05-09-2006, 03:50 PM
YAY!!! just the ignition fuse

i might do a mod where i dont need a screwdriver to get into the fusebox :D

anyways, i guess that means i need to investigate the earthing on the reg/rec unit, i didnt put it straight to the chassis (i know, stupid....[B)])

fimpBIKES
13-10-2006, 06:31 PM
i was right
fried my reg cos i hadnt earthed it correctly

that ok, gave me an excuse to fit the pretty aftermarket one i bought ;)
now its fine, no problems at all

i put in the new clutch plates and the 10% heavier springs last night
fuck me the clutch lever is heavy now!!

is that normal? will it ease up a bit with time?

TurboKat
14-10-2006, 09:06 AM
Yes & no.
I found wanking with my left hand increased my clutch stamina. [:I]

fimpBIKES
14-10-2006, 02:39 PM
but i AM left handed...

and i ride everyday

maybe i will get one of those springy things

did a big ride today, heated handgrips have to go
im sick of having to twist the cord back around cos it slips on the throttle side

and clutch is cool
now i only need to just flick the clutch on upchanges
and definitely am getting better final drive now

almost had an upset today trying to brake at the same time as the blokes on SV1000's i was hooning with
have to keep reminding myself its a bit porky ;)

fimpBIKES
21-10-2006, 07:03 AM
oh dear,
the katana got SHAMED on the dyno yesterday

compared to previous ones they have dyno'd (at Greame Morris in Newy)
she is much stronger through the low/mid

but it gets to about 80hp and its all over red rover...
its just spasms into a flat-line :(

its got the fresh clutch, so its not that thats slipping
one mechanic thought maybe the mains were way to small

i guess i will put the new spark plugs in and then get them to do it again with the A/F Ratio thingy on
that should tell me where it is going wrong

oh, and the speedo needle snapped off
anyone know where i can get fresh needles from??

fimpBIKES
21-10-2006, 07:04 AM
oh, and i will drop in and get a screenshot of the graph this arvo

Ed74mnd
23-10-2006, 11:29 AM
80hp only?

been reading up on carb tuning and it does sound a little like main jets. From my reading these babys give you power at 3/4 to full throttle where you would expect max power.

why dont you throw on a set of 38mm slingshot carbs and pods :-)

Cheers

well well well, its been a while eh?

since the last update i got defected on my big balls out run (nov 06)

went to japan in 2008 and bought some fancy bits (used front fairing with headlight, full zorst and yoshi rear shocks)
and then yesterday i pump up its tyres and rolled it out into the sun

took the carbs off a few weeks back and cleaned them inside and out
i have a un-hacked loom i got from a wreckers the other week to go in there too, the old one looked soo unlike the wiring diagram that it wasnt worth trying to salvage

so yeah, watch this space :D

fimpBIKES

the katana has a turn signal relay, but also something called a "turn signal controller"
whats that do?

Turn signal controller works with the speedo to auto cancel the indicators after 2km or something.

bit of an update on the old-girl

put a new rear tyre on the weekend, while i was at it i did the sprockets
took off the front sprocket cover and discovered the nut had come off sometime in the last few thousand k's
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v676/fimpbikes/2012-03-18_KatFrontsprocketoops.jpg
felt a bit like vomitting when i realised how many corners in the snowy run this could have locked up in and spat me down a cliff...

all good now though, the new tyre is a pirelli sport demon
been riding around on it for a few days now and im stoked! its got a much rounder profile like a modern sportsbike tyre.
the battlax's i had on it were a really flat profile even when new, much more of a yamaharley sort of tyre i think

finally got around to doing this (after 6yrs of looking at it and thinking "i should cut that off")
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v676/fimpbikes/2012-03-16_KatGuardHack.jpg
took about 6 seconds LOL

Could be the distance sensor rooted (did you even know it has self canceling blinkers?)
The book tells you how to check it, I found one on google books, but it cuts pages out (eg, the one with the sensor test... :()

The switch block will need to be changed, as there is no proper off switch in it. if you want to keep period correct go to a normal gsx one.

i wouldnt mind more modern switches to be honest
will keep an eye out for some

figured out why the bloody thing wouldnt flash, the electronic flasher relay i got needs enough load to make it work so ive had to put an extra resistor in the circuit to get it to flash. not particularly happy about it but thats the workaround cos i cant be bothered buying another relay!

Hi everyone!!!!

Just popped in to see what is happening for the AFR this year.
Can you believe its been over 10yrs since I brought home this stray Kat????

Its now finally in a happy spot inside the shed and away from the security vines and offers from elderly gentlemen passing by.

Would love to say its fixed, but it isnt. Been parked up since I tried to become a grown-up in 2012 and stopped riding to work.
Anyway, that experiment is over so hoping this year sees the return of the old girl.

Any tips on how to stay awake 30hours a day to get things finished? please pm me.
