Well this is my build and i got it on the road at the start of the month after about 2.5 years building. bike is a 1982 GT750 shaft drive.

started out like this
got it for nothing off the work bulletin board.

old mate had cracked the head and barrels off sat them back on and left it in his car port where the motor proceeded to fill with water from a neighbours sprinkler supposedly, the bores were shagged from rust so i ordered a wiseco big bore 810 kit from the states.

this was after i started doing some mods and got a cheapo glass seat off ebay.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e183/Jay_G84/IMG_2607.jpg

picked a crash damaged yoshi pipe up off a mate for a bottle of rum

had no guts so i made a new perforated tube up for it and chopped it.

pipes are a set of butchered late model zx7

Front guard is a race glass R6 jobbie off ebay.

this is final assy before painting the body work

this is how it sits as of tonight. had a little mishap with the rear under tray at about $1.60 the other day

At this stage probably will not be able to make it to the fools run, saving for a wedding, though i was permitted to punish the credit card to pay the fucks (yes you RTA and QBE) near $800 for rego and green slip, and other various shit that added up.

Well, update time.

Its been on the road for 11 months.
its a all weather bike. so its starting to look second hand, note to self Acrylic paint sucks the wang for bodywork as does supposed heatproof engine paint.

i also snapped a clutch cable and couldn't get a replacment in time as they are not made OEM any more. so the clear side cover is gone and i put a gpz setup in there.

i also threw some new fiber plates at it a month or two ago as i still had slipping problems.

I have fitted an Acewell dash.

and put some new bar end mirrors on yesterday and proceded to have the glass fall out of one of them this morning in the bike shop car park.

Moved to QLD and in the new town (ipswich) the local kawasaki shop has a runs a dyno on saturdays for $30,

it made a whopping 72.4 hp at the back wheel which isn't to bad for an aircooled 810 that is a shaft drive

But, the Air fuel ratios are a fair bit out, i always knew something was out but now know what to do,

until almost 6000rpm the AFR is in the 15's

and the 14s in the top end. the mech said they should be down around 13.0 and to get there by going bigger on the mains.

then i decided to take it to Willowbank for a run this evening.

first ever run down the strip was a 12.873 @ 105mph

second i stuffed the launch ran a 13.218 @ 97 mph

third i broke it.

snapped the gear lever coming out of first. it had already been welded once so now i have to try make a new one.

Eventually you will have to get a manual camchain adjuster, those 'automatic adjuster' setups blow big time. I fixed the sucker on my 810 by cutting off the end, re threading a much larger bolt and locknut through the original body,so I can lock down the camchain tension to where I want it, rather than have the adjuster let loose on high engine revs over run, which WILL happen.
There's plenty of places offering aftermarket adjusters, but they are just a fitting that suits the engine, and a bolt and locknut to adjust the tension.
I like your project Jay, it's great to see an old GT750 reborn..

Bit more of of an update,

manual ignition advancers are FUCKED. short run down of it.
spring snaps, kawasaki say no go need to buy whole assy, spend a day running around to find a suitable one from car shop, get one, its too stiff, doesnt advance till like 5k rpm, pickups and the rotor part have taken a hit in the past before i got the bike. rego is due on 3rd of feb, bike shop said no way they would pass a rego check due to the short tail, drilled carb mains out bigger so it works up top but bottom is fucked due to no advance. kawasaki wants around $400 for new bits on slow boat from japland, dont want to buy second hand.

So its coming off the road, more than likely going to get a megasquirt, and throttle bodies off a newer bike and fuck these fucking carbs off and pre-historic fucking ignition. FUCK

i dont think it will be ready for AFR due to funds or lack there of.

are you going to run the ignition on the megasquirt? It is not real easy on a bike!!
You can get a dyna s from z1 enterprises in the states for us$120
but you need to use the centrifugal advance.

Couldn't you use an ignition sytem from the injected 750? I know the ignition wiring on my turbo model is separate from the rest of the loom.It has the ignition curve built into the igniter box, so you could possibly dump the mechanical advance system and set up the two timing transducers on the existing mounts. I'll have a look at my spares tomorrow, and see if I have a complete setup.Unfortunately the turbo igniter box has less advance, but at least you'd know if it would be possible.
Does the megasquirt run ignition? I thought they were fuel only...

evad
28-01-2009, 01:11 PM
yep they run ignition using the ms&s extra code but bikes are a bitch to get right with consistant good starts being the most difficult.
I think that the 750 turbo ignition system would work but you would need the rotor on the crank, the ignitor box and the plate with the 2 sensors on it.

Looks like i have a lead on a cheap megasquirt 2.2, so i will buy the ignition daughter board a perform the waste spark mod on it so i don't have to run an edis module, i need to find a suitable set of late model throttle bodies that will fit with a bit of fettling. i may be sick and twisted but i am kind of looking forward to learning how to tune the beasty.

from what i have read the difficulty starting comes from lack of resolution on the trigger wheel, so i am intending on running a 36-1 toothed wheel as you can get them in small sizes now.

With any luck i will have it ready by the fools run.

No real updates on the ignition front. but i did buy an interesting little item on Saturday morning at a swap meet. i need to find a couple more foggers and some 4 port showerheads, jetting and some hoses

Jay_G

time for an update, ITS REBUILD TIME. and i am doing it right this time, powder coating and 2pac FTW. megasquirt has been put in the too hard basket, and i found a late model ignition setup so no mere mechanical advancer. nitrous kit was sold on to fund the rebuild.

this is how the bike looked after a year on the road, lesson to oneself, don't use acrylic paint or supposed rattle can heat proof paint.

how it looked this arvo before i started.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e183/Jay_G84/IMG_0015.jpg

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e183/Jay_G84/IMG_0016.jpg

i am sick of getting water all over my back from the tyre and damaging number plates so its time for a new tail and tank. tank is getting replaced because i cannot get my knees in with the late model rearsets and the paint is bubbling a bit from rust i think, the later model gpz tank has leg cut outs.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e183/Jay_G84/IMG_0019.jpg

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e183/Jay_G84/IMG_0017.jpg

and this arvo i managed to get the front mounts for the tank sorted out as they are in a different position. tank is also getting lifted at the rear so the base is parallel with the rocker cover so the lines flow a bit better.

mocked up with the tail sat on and the rear of the tank spaced up to the right height.

Nice work man! I thought I seen a green framed bike before, and it was yours! I like the new tail your doing. Should look good when your all done again.

I bought a mig welder...... it fuggin rocks.

only a cheapy gas/gasless 150 amp jobbie from glenfords but fuck it makes attaching bits of steel easy.

so with my new found fabricating abilities and extra space under the seat i am thinking of pissing all the electrics and big battery off from inside the side covers and go the clean look with no covers and tidy up around under the tank and seat with some sheet metal.

so what is the smallest battery that is cheap and still provide a decent kick? so i can fit it under the seat.

I now have an 07 Busa front end sitting at home, i haven't had a chance to look at it yet as i am away with work, but there is the triples, forks, wheel, discs and calipers.

any tips on the best way of adapting this to basicly a gpz head stock?

also is there any bolt on front guards besides the busa one? its a little to big for the look i am going for.

These two topics would give you the basic idea of what you need to do mate:

Each application is different but the concept is the same.

got home today after being away for another 5 weeks and jumped straight in, i had measured all the stuff up when i was home for a few days and dropped it off at the machinist to get the stem to fit.

it appears that i know how to use a set of verniers and it all bolted up, but appearances can be deceiving... the front is sitting too low, full compression of the forks would see the headers scraping along the ground, and i think it wont like speed humps either.

so now i have to make a decision, do i cut my losses and give up and start selling bits off or start chopping headers + always be wary of it scraping on things and tweaking it to have a compromise. Its never going to be fast or worth anything at the end so i cannot justify getting a drop top clamp made.

the main reason for the fork swap was to get better handling, i'm not sure if it going to do it with the front end so low in an almost drag bike style. it does look slightly tough though

My front end is from a '91 gsxr750, it dropped the front end around 65mm, and with the back jacked up 80mm [the maximum I could get without running into problems with the chain hitting the top of the swingarm], the old turbo handles HEAPS better. They[bigK] set the original steering head angle way out at around 26deg or so. Loosing some length off the forks is gonna reduce the angle a bit, speeding up response, and put more weight over the front end. Don't worry about it sitting lower, it will make the bike more stable.
Go for it,a late model front end will kill the old one in the handling dept, it will be stiffer too, so hitting the pipes probably won't happen.
Looks heaps better already mate!

I have got a bit more done over the last 2 days, put a piece of card under the pillion seat hole and filled with expanda foam in preparation for fibre glassing, started cutting bits off it with a sharp kitchen knife... the missus wasn't to happy when she walked out to see me sitting on the floor with a good knife in hand covered in foam.

Also made up the steering stops and dampener mount and tacked them on, the old steering stop is getting lopped off when i pull the forks again

HOH..... i think you got my post confused with Benz's, its an 07 Busa front on mine.

I bought an 03 R1 shock to have a go at a Moto martin style monoshock setup, its just not going to fit...sigh. and without going with some obscure small custom shock that costs 11ty billion dollars and needs a rebuild i think i am going to bite the bullet split the cases and stuck a gear set and output shaft from a chain driven gpz, and then find a swing arm to fit.
