Been lurking on the forums for too long now so its time to get my bike up here :)

Bought my 2000 zx9r about a year ago already naked but with little scented candles for headlights.

7272

Ran alright but changed the headlight out and got some bar end mirrors and it stayed pretty much the same for a couple of months.
7273

Always loved the ducati sport from Tron and didnt really like the balance of the ninja tail without the front fairings on so after much procrastination ordered a fibreglass tail from Airtech and got to it. Found the guy that made the LED tail lights for the Tron bike and he wanted 450ish US for the standard ducati kit or 550 for a custom kit. Found where he bought his LED arrays from and ordered straight from them for 110 :)

Took about 3 months for the tail to arrive but the workmanship on it is amazing. Highly recommend their products.

Tail arrived while I was away at work so got the missus to sit it on the back and send me a photo to keep me busy scheming till i got home.
7274
Ripped the old tail off as soon as i got home.
7275
Then it was out with the good ol angle grinder :)
7277
She sat looking very naked for a while till a plan was formulated.
7276
Did a test run with the lights to keep the motivation up.
7278
couldnt come up with a good idea for mounting the tail for ages till a buddy came over and suggested that since the cross member on the subframe had mounting holes for the original seat just chop that up and stick it to the new tail so did a little test fit and it worked out sweet. two bolts in the seat area and the old seat base to support the rear/hump.
7279
Managed to keep everything in pretty much its factory spot apart from the reg. Havent had any heat issues as yet but i might drill some breather holes at the rear of the tail baseplate to get some airflow through there.
7281
Decided to go with a new colour instead of the factory green so chose Midnight Pearl. Its a honda colour from the NSX / s2000. Its just a rattle can job and havent cut and polished it yet but it turned out ok apart from the orange peel on the clear coat. Left all the little dents in the tank for some extra street cred :)
72827283

When I was doing all the test fitting for the tail i had already pulled the tank off and sanded it back and primed it. This of course meant taking out the rubber grommets for the tank mounting points which meant when i had it all done ready to put back together everything was off by about 20mm. many beers later and some left over sponge padding from the seat pad and all was well. the seating position is a bit lower than the standard seat and the sponge seat pad is a lot grippier so not as easy to change positions but Im loving the extra support from the hump.
Still need to set up the magnet for the acewell speedo. It was on the list but I havent ridden her for almost 6 weeks now so as soon as she was all buttoned up it was out for a ride :)
Ive got a Danmoto xg1 exhaust in the shed too and im tossing up which one ill go with. the danmoto with the baffles in sounds better than the stubby, not as boomy, but the bike loses some top end. take the baffles out and it screams :) but im sure the local constabulary will start hunting me down.

Also looking at different headlight setup. Vrod? mt07? Id love a huge moto headlight but not for 500 US

Finally got off my ass and installed the acewell speedo sensor. 6mm rare earth magnet fits just nicely inside the disc bolt hole. drilled and tapped for the screws to mount the sensor and a generous dose of red loctite and shes all good.

Chucked on the danmoto xg1 while I was at it.

Top job . What was the old muffler ?

It was an old Yoshi that had been chopped down.

That's some good work mounting the speedo sensor at the rear.

So got a new fuel filter and while the tank was off thought well might as well do the fork oil too and one thing lead to another and now it has a black frame :)
73657366

got some new front discs too and grabbed a pair of nissin 4 pots to replace the spongetastic 6 pots.7364
so heres the problem. always had a judder from the front under brakes which i assumed was warped rotors. replaced rotors and same problem. changed calipers and same problem. seems to be just the right disc and just at one spot. when the front is jacked up and I spin the wheel there is a definite spot where the rotor moves towards the caliper. Im running out of ideas for what it could be apart from maybe wheel bearings or a dodgy wheel. anyone got any suggestions?

New disks and new calipers and it's still not straight?? That's interesting! The mounting bolts are all ok yea?

wilso8948
14-12-2015, 01:09 PM
Maybe bent front rim?

latheboy
15-12-2015, 11:30 AM
Is the whole wheel moving or just the disc?

Change your wheel bearing while you have it (mostly) in bits, might be an easy fix might not but at least you know the bearings are good.

Are the disc carriers sitting flat on the hub? If there's shit underneath them they might be sitting crooked.

Klapparbaver
17-12-2015, 10:33 PM
Thanks for all the replies. Im away for work for a bit but I'll do the bearings when i get back and go from there. I cleaned the rim where the carriers sit before I put on the new discs.

GammaBoy
18-12-2015, 11:47 AM
Has it had one of the holes for the carrier helicoiled? Some muppet not running the helicoil all the way below flush is a classic way to wind up with something not bolting down flush.

Chucked in the new bearings and it seems to have sorted it.
Also did the 4 degree ignition advance mod and the quick throttle mod. so much nicer to ride now.
Acewell started playing up yesterday though. the tacho was jumping all over the show then settled down when cruising at steady rpm but accelerate or deccelerate and it went nuts. Ill chuck a resistor on the signal line tomorrow and see if that settles it down

The arse-end looks 100% better being shorter, coming along well.

Klapparbaver
18-06-2016, 06:58 PM
Obligatory wiring shot :)
Put a resistor in line on the tacho signal wire has sorted that problem.
Gonna shorten up the harness a bit while its exposed.
7631

New tires and chain. Went 1 tooth down on the front sprocket and 2 up on the back = wheelie central.

7632
Got the subframe properly done. use the same legs just trimmed off the brackets and angled them up and in so the lower legs follow the same line as the upper ones. just gotta make a battery box / electrical stuff tray.
Also going to fibreglass the bottom of the tail so its all closed up to where it meets the subframe.

Need to relocate the reg somewhere in the fresh air. any suggestions ?

K6Thou
19-06-2016, 10:41 AM
Can you fab a bracket so it mounts just inside where the subframe bolts to the frame ?

Klapparbaver
19-06-2016, 10:52 AM
That's where the fuel tap and ignition barrel live so might be too tight. I could probably bolt it to the front of the battery box but even that might be pushing it for space

B-King Reg/Rec lives under the swingarm behind the motor.
The fin's face the rear tyre, I thought it would get a hard life but it seems OK.

Klapparbaver
20-06-2016, 01:55 PM
That could be a winner. Just need to extend the wiring a bit

Battery box sorted and home found for reg/rec. now need to sort out where the junction box and ignition controller will live

I really need to post more frequently :)
Not sure if this still qualifies as a street fighter but for the time being this is how it turned out.

Ducati 900ss front cowl and fibreglass standard front wheel fairing from the same place i got the tail unit from. HID headlight retro fit. Made a new number plate bracket and moved the indicators to the side using the old fairing mounting holes. Radiator overflow bottle moved to sit just behind the carbies.
Still not sure on the positioning/angle of the front cowl. might end up moving it slightly more forward.83348335

The cowl looks great from the front view, but it needs to be positioned back closer towards the bars and forks.

Klapparbaver
05-01-2018, 01:56 AM
yeah i initially wanted it further back but where it is now the bars only just clear at full lock.
If its angled up more at the front then it can move closer and still clear but then the lines don't match the rest of the bike. Just looks like it sitting up way too high

Klapparbaver
28-12-2018, 09:41 PM
Moved the front around a bit so it sits a lot better with the lines of the rest of the bike now.
And picked up a set of these about 6 months ago. Took a few rides to get used to the throttle control to keep them happy but they sound soooooo awesome :)8430

Picked up a vfr gear shift lever too so its running a reverse shift pattern. Needed to remove the sprocket cover get the bolt in then chuck the cover back on but it shifts a lot nicer now.

And here it is hiding behind its big brother dreaming of ways to steal the supercharger

Having been down that path before I buy filters at every chance I get
easier and cheaper in the long run

Klapparbaver
08-01-2019, 06:33 PM
cool. I'll go with that then. Worth getting a little bit of foam to cover up the two openings just under the stacks?

ozzy1100

The ram air filter should cover everything

so next question is do the 35mm stacks make much difference compared to the 50mm? I've got 50mm but seen a few zx7r's on the interwebs with 50mm for cylinder 2 and 3 and 35mm on cylinder 1 and 4. and a lot of the fcr sets for gixxers have all 35mm? anyone run both and know if it makes that much of a difference?

GammaBoy
05-03-2019, 08:56 AM
For the ZX9 I'd stay with 50mm - on the 7s they need the shorter ones on the outside cylinders for clearance I think, but they certainly rev harder than the 9.

Those Flat-slides are wicked! I know what you mean about getting used to throttle input, I had a set of 39mm Keihin Flat-slides on my old ZXR750, and anywhere under 5 grand, couldn't go wide open, it would get that much fuel and air, it would get overwhelmed and bog down. Definitely hammered up high though, went well with the full system I had on it.

Picked up this old girl today. Not sure on what direction to go with her just yet. Anyone got any info / manuals for these? Its got a compliance plate from 1998 and the frame has zr250b stamped on it.

So does anyone know where to buy spark plug leads for old bikes? Tried supercheap, autobarn, repco, the local tuning shop and just got blanks look from all of them. ended up buying them off ebay but i thought at least one shop would have copper core spark plug leads in stock.

I found a set of genuine coild and leads for my 1100 because I didnt want cheapies again. Caused to many issues

Ended up doing a coil on plug conversion with my zx9r coils. Just made a new subharness and away she went :) still wasted spark setup but the spark is heaps stronger now
