I've been thinking of giving the old girl a bit of a birthday, nothing to drastic, just a lick of paint and a new headlight unit. Has anyone used Plasti dip and what sort of results did you get? Good or bad ?

I used it on the screen of my mt09.
Not plasti dip brand, but same sort of vinyl in a can, in matte black.
Easy to use, decent result, has been fine over the last few months.
And I've got an mt09 headlight for sale....

I've used it on my ute bumper, wheels and any other grey external plastic I could find, plus also the grille of a Subaru. Considering the front bumper and grille on the Subaru take all the stones etc, it has lasted for over a year without any marks. The fact that it is a rubberised finish deflects everything. Costly as all fuck, but did a good job for what I needed.

Had a mate do his roll bars in his 4x4 ute - that was not so good. It peeled off and chipped in no time due to hard swiping-motion impacts. If the surface will get strapped, scratched or swiped by anything hard, don't use Plasti-dip. Just think of it like a thick vinyl that you can cut and peel off at any point.

I tested a can on a pair of mirrors, hung them up from my pergola and found I had to use the whole can to get decent coverage, which seemed excessive IMHO, but I'm certainly no expert in the painting department. The results were OK but the rubbery coating did attract a helluva lot of fluff and stuff even though my beastie only gets a bath every six months or so. I doubt I'd use it on anything forward-pointing again as it even seemed to be able to suck fibres out of a microfibre wash mitt thing.

722272237224I've done my bike with it. Turned out pretty good. There's heaps of tip vids on YouTube.
The key is heaps of thin coats. Then bake it in the sun to harden it.

Thanks for the advice lads. I was planning on painting all the body work. From what I see on the tube of you if I don't like the result i should be able to peal it off. looks like ill need to get the new light unit sorted then have a crack at paint

Most forgiving paint I've ever used. You fuck up just spray more over the top. Scratch it just spray over it. Etc
It does peel off. But if you do it like I did and bake it it's not real easy to get off. The more coats you put makes it easier to remove also. If you lay it on thin and don't like it peeling it off is a pita.

This guy dipped his MT09 frame, and it looks pretty good.
I want to do my VFR frame.

I've done a few wheels with it , Paint out of the can is very cold sensitive (pre heat cans in a little hot water) Makes for a much better (thinner) spray pattern . Let it flash off well in between coats , Seems to hold up well and covers nice. If its not nice and warm out of the can , it will come out very thick and give a stippled shit finish, keep it warm (keeps pressure up in can and paint thin) and it goes on nice and smooth.

If you want to peel sections off , Ie no masking just spray wheel and tyre on , run a sharp knife along where you want to pull it up. Then run your finger over the edge , it will lift and you can peel it away easily.

That what I used.
I just did my Vfr tank, I had previously done both sides of my mt09 screen, and it's still not empty.
One can for a whole bike is brilliant, muz.

BOBBY

Not bad for one can. I dumped a whole can on my tank. Mine was the plasti dip from autobarn.

I'm going to give that supershit one a go on my rims.

The can says 5-6 minutes between coats. I had the bike masked up and painted in less than an hour7258

That looks cool Muz.looks like i had better pull my finger out and get the new headlight mounted. Then get some paint on
Allthough painting a yellow bike black seams to be a bit oldhat around here

We done the track bikes over the weekend.
Yellow will probably shine through the black, you may need a few cans. We have some bog sections on the race glass standing out like dog balls on the lighter colour plastidip after 6 coats.
We used 6 cans on a fully faired GSXR. I'll get some pics of Josh's bike up when we put back together, it's a total fucking piss take, the guys at Autopro didn't have enough colours, I went with a simple black red.

It feels pretty funky hey, not sure how it will go on the track bike with leathers sliding all over, it's a bit grippy........like.......spray on rubber........der.
I used one can of grey and two cans of red for mine, really needed more red though.

You painted it that way on purpose?

On the plus side, no matter what leathers or helmet he wears, it'll match his bike.

I sat the can in warm water between coats. Don't know if it helps, but it doesn't hurt.

Photobucket has changed mate. You now need to clikc SHARE (other) and then get the DIRECT link. I am hoping to update the forum over Christmas and then you'll simply take a photo on your phone and upload it directly. Hang in there!

Rhys painted all the chrome on his hilux with the black and so far so good except for a few stone chips the only thing I can see copping a flogging is your legs rubbing it on the tank
