Hi
I understand its possible, and a good idea for a 1327 block, to replace the standard Z900 starter motor with one from a Honda CB1100. Is it just the motor that's needed, or do you need to replace the reduction gear as well?

There are a few tricks to the Honda swap
There are a few better options, ones we use on 1427 + motors with
higher comp.....

Welcome Dave. Lynton (Ozzy1100) knows a fair deal about Zeds. Ask him what he's currently building!

I've never seen so many Zed heads together, that weren't on actual bikes. Nice salvage work.

I really would appreciate some advice and tips on alternatives for the standard Z9 starter motor. I live in Edinburgh Scotland and I've had my Zed for 35 years now and although it never started in the streetfighter style, it has evolved into just that. But since installing the 1327 kit several years ago, it destroyed the original starter (big bang) and has a habit of breaking the woodruff key and spinning the rotor. Already had to replace the rotor twice after lapping it onto the crank failed. I read on another post/forum that improving the starter would help. And that's what I need help, please.

Grind the ignition advancer bob weights on their inner stops to retard the ignition for starting - assuming Zeds use a mechanical advancer - it'll stop it kicking back when starting (which is what's shearing the woodruff key).
Did this on my Kat and it's made a huge difference.
I ground the stop (circled in red) back flush with the rest of the bob weight.

Thanks for the advice. Its fitted with Dyna-S but does use the mechanical advancer. I'll refit the standard starter (its got a heavier gauge starter lead) once I've lapped the rotor back onto the crank and try the timing mod to avoid kick back.

Lynton - what do you mean the starter is "hot rodded"?

I'd guess re-wound for more power.

Yes that's it Ben, the zx and Honda starters are both four pole from mem but any of them can be done...
We send to a bloke in the usa
Your problem is a timing one as Ben said... Ether run ten less advance and mod the unit so you still get full advance at revs or even maybe look at a dyna 2000
