So I got a busa , I wasn't really chasing one I was really looking at buells , ktm990's , and even tdm900's as down to a frame they don't look to bad , originally thinking turbo twin you see so I had been smashing youtube looking at the different models and researching google flat out , thinking well im gonna have to sell some thing as the missus was going to go mental if another bike appears in the shed she reckons I don't need that many bikes as I can only ride one at a time I retaliated with why do you need so many shoes as you can only wear one pair at a time !!!! bad move lesson learnt , so the yzf was on the list to go , trench wench maybe , and the vfr if I had to but I really don't want to part with them as there all my own creation bar the yzf

so one day this week whilst procrastinating at work I was facebooking and up pops this busa for sell or swap , at first I thought of azrael as I know he wants one but I though ill just flick him a message to see if he would be keen for a swap on the yzf it doesn't owe me much and was similar priced to what he wanted for the busa , turns out he was dead keen me well I wasn't sure but the busa idea grew on me rapidly and a deal was done

its a 99 model repairable write off from alice springs bought online from the ACT pickles auctions and now resides in WA since 2012 its had a couple of owners since not sure what that's about but im gonna start looking into the repwriteoff rules here I know it can be done but how far I have to go back to original to pass the tech inspection im gonna have to look into

it has a power commander on it but im guessing it should light up when its running coz it doesn't , has carbon pipes although one is a little cracked but it runs and sounds good

so War Machine is some thing ive wanted to name a bike of mine refering to the ac/dc song the plate surround from wacky ive had for a long time and was going to go on the yzf but it didn't represent its self enough to earn it , this build will , not sure on plans in much detail yet but I want it to be dark and sinister , handle well , light , and go like all fuck

Cheers phantom was kinda glad something came along coz i was tempted to do maybe redo the vfr but its been such a great and reliable ride i dont want to ruin that so its been relegated to more daily dutys

so good news today did some checking up on the write off thingo since its from the NT bought from the ACT and now in wa i wanted to be sure it definately can be re regoed . Listed as a economical repairable write off was damaged on 30 dec 2011 in alice springs hence the square tyres and the stale as all fark fuel . So now to find out how far i have to go to get it tech inspected before rego

Plenty of fun things to do with Busa's. Remember with the busa there are some changes between the 99/00 and the 01 and then more from 02 up mostly to do with wiring and ecu, the PC units are different and the clutch doesn't have the factory cushion. Either way get a Brock cushion and ultra light hub for the clutch. Have fun :)

Early ones had different ECU's and Powercommanders.

Also had a different fuel pump set up.

Had alloy subframe but after a few (not many!) broke they went to steel.

BTL in the clutch isn't great but easily locked up as its not needed.

6-plop calipers are average at best, even with good lines, pads and fluid.

340k / 200mph clocks are nice but being unrestricted isn't a big deal.
Both mine were done for 20c each. It's a 6.8ohm resister.

Clean 1999 models are going up in value, first of the breed.
I prefer 04 to 08, the later slightly better Gen-1's, but I'd still grab a 99 at the right price.

Greg / Booster / Maj or here or the AU Busa forum is pretty clued up on the early models differences.

They are great fun bikes once you put some K's in and get used to them.

so a little update and some added info for those attemping a rep write off in wa , so firstly not alot has been happening on the project a few bits and peices ordered off ebay and alot of research on things i have planned looks wise and such that ive pretty much got a plan and how i want it to look when im finished , amoungst the other things going on trailer dirt draggers the van and a 17 mth old future miss hoon ive been busy , i have got the power commander working and the busted tre and grear indicator off removed the gay heated grips repaired a bit of wiring and cleaned out the fuel system , she now runs mint

so the wovr rep write off stuff , i made a few phone calls about the inspection and what is involved , basically the bike need to be presented as close to standard and looking as it came off the shop floor , now i have none of the fairing lights and such but i didnt want to comit to spending a packet getting it to this point if the thing is twisted and bent , to me it looks fine but you never know , so after speaking to motorcycle masters who do the inspection they understand where im at and told me that for the 180 buck inspection i get a reinspection after for free so i thought ill take it as is present it unfinish and get the structural side checked and a list if any of things needed so when i reinspect its perfect .

so down it went as is looking pretty sad but i want to make sure im not wasting my time , as it turns out its perfect structurally just a slight twist in the headlight bracket that i can tweak out , but the next drama is putting the tuperware back on , its not as simple as just borrowing some i have to actually buy some present a reciept and a vin number from which and parts came from , so you can prove its not stolen and the like , and the guys at motor cycle masters are coming through again and have got the bits vins and such i need its just a matter of saving for them buying and fit them tech inspect again pass then of to get rego inspected pass , be fully licenced for the road and strip it down and resell all the tuperware and start fightering , simple lol , really not to hard just time comsuming and following the process but you can see why with all the stolen bikes out there really

Scott, back when I did the R1 I used eBay receipts for the fairings and they accepted them. I had no VIN numbers (this may have changed from back then and I did it in VIC), just printouts from Paypal and eBay.

What a pain in the arse, but as you say you can't really call it unreasonable - otherwise there would be bikes being flogged left right and centre to repair cosmetic write-offs.

hyofighter
02-08-2015, 12:03 AM
so I had a few bits to fit up , non genuine undertail that came with the bike and a front guard from tom and I thought id pose the question if they would be happy with it turns out no , wovr requires it to be stock as possible unfortunate but I thought id try

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/Mobile%20Uploads/20150718_171037_zpsegekc64r.jpg (http://s1087.photobucket.com/user/hyofighter/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150718_171037_zpsegekc64r.jpg.html)

so after talks with them and motorcycle masters they found me everything I need (well hopefully ) to get some Tupperware back on this thing to make it a pass for the wovr inspection , then its rego inspection time , then back home strip it all off sell it back to them and start making the vision in my head come to life

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/Mobile%20Uploads/20150801_095124_zpshiqxkrww.jpg (http://s1087.photobucket.com/user/hyofighter/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150801_095124_zpshiqxkrww.jpg.html)

And so it begins . So far all fitting up well only a few screws and clips missing but easily found in my piles of odds and sods . Few major things noted to get overflow bottle as this one is cracked , 2 engine bolts to pull the drop knob bolts back out . And a low beam globe and holder other than that seems to be falling together well but time consuming flying blind in how it fits together . Seems to have a bit of a american theme going on haha

sure is , the yzf750 i finished not long ago although a nice bike i hated the power delivery nothing nothing nothing everything but it was quick and fun where as the vfr being v4 is awesome down low and mid range just lacking in the top , this thing is great all over but also being twice the capacity to anything ive had before is a benifit too haha , downside i weighed her with a full tank with the scales flicking between 250 and 260 i think she needs to go on a diet

so today was a nervous day , hour or so ride to the city running through my head have I done everything have I got everything hope this is all I have to do , as I head to my wovr reinspection turns out all is sweet on the that and it passes fine , now its eligible to be inspected for rego so back up the hill its off to the inspection station again passes with ease , next drama is taking the pile of paper work of inspection approvals 3 stat decs and proof of purchase receipts to the licensing in return for a plate making all this worth it , turns out yes , one successfully lic repairable written off motorcycle through the system , crashed in the nt in 2011 bought through pickles auctiosn in the act sold to Victoria and swapped a few times landing its self in wa somewhere on the way , now mine , and loving it

so first piece ive sorted out for her it a way off fitting up some of my favourite flat drag bars since putting my own bend bars on the last few bikes ive really liked the width nice and wide and a minimal bend so this wont be any different , but how to fit them up , the busa has kinda clip style bars that are apart of a top plate that bolts down to the top yoke id looked a bens extreme creation top yoke and they are nice bits of gear as well as the lsl stuff also good but I wanted my own thing and I liked the idea of the top bolting down for the rubber dampening and just to be different

http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mRyrDjD0XHBjavoB-UjRJVg.jpg

so ive employed the skills of one talented man motomax we had a brainstorm and burnt out facebook messenger and I left it with him and he has come up with the goods and it looks shit hot , well stoked with it , allows a off the shelf set of rhk risers to fit also allows the forks to travel through them so the front height can be adjusted also clearance to the movement in the dampening plus its a one off , now im hoping tom has some cromo bar left so I can make some bars

Very nice. I do like a good Busa fighter. The only thing that spoils Busa's for fighters to me is that bit of frame that comes up behind the tank. To me it looks odd, even on a stock hyabusa it looks weird.
But, I would love to be in your shoes right now, what a great project and really looking forward to seeing it morph into some naked coolness ;-)

So the bars . I need to sort the bars before i can start hacking wiring and measure for the length on the brake and clutch lines . So having made the last few bars myself ive been happy with the super wide stance and the shallow bend so why not do it again . Previously id picked up some cromo bar from azrael and have been pondering on how wide i want them , the vfr ones are 900 wide and the trench wench jnr ones are 850 and with the busa being such a fat bike i think 900 is the go .

Right subframe has turned up and i had it pictured as being a easier fit but like all things that arent meant to be together its gonna take some doing . My criteria for choosing this tail - it had to be smallish but not ridiculous small or rc8 small , it needed to flow with the curves and roundness of the busa tank and finally have 2 seats as everything i own has a single seat . So my choice a 2001 vtr 250 . Ewwww i hear you say hey i know but i like it and i have some treats instore for it .

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/Mobile%20Uploads/20151007_215355_zpsqsp0vlk6.jpg (http://s1087.photobucket.com/user/hyofighter/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20151007_215355_zpsqsp0vlk6.jpg.html)

Substantially slimmer than the busa rear and will be somewhat shorter to id say . Only drama is the subframe that came with it has had a good knock as one side is pushed back a tad and it has a twist in it . But no dramas as it need a major reshape any ways the basis is there to start with

hooligan

and for the taillight, what about a shameless plug?

not a lot been going on again but xmas coming up and heading to summernats this year with the car club doing the drive from west to east and back getting cars finished and prep'd there hasn't been much happening in the busa department mainly because its time to buy some bits and funds just seem to disappear at the moment , but I have chopped up the vtr seat abit but I think ill make it a bit shorter in the front yet to get it a bit more stumpy , the look is growing on me still not 100% on it yet but once I get the other piece of the puzzle for the front ill see how it all ties together and see if it flows and more importantly if I like it , one thing that will need doing is to build up the front of the pillion seat section to carry the line of flow from the tank , the rider seat height is a bit higher than the original busa not by much but im trying to give the illusion of a smaller tank but I don't think its working haha , so I mocked it up and have left it like this in the shed for the last few weeks so I catch a glimpse every so often to see if I still like it , in my head I think it will work with what I want for the front and for the retro muscle fighter I have in my mind , just hope it does or its back to the drawing board

yeah I kinda know what ya meen and I kinda liking that too , but since its been sitting like this in the shed its grown on me but im thinking shorter at the front I want to tie in that stupid bit of frame so it doesn't look so untidy and out of place so if I can tie it to flow the on with the rear plastic it think it might be neater , so I copped some more off the seat front and now she is snug when you sit in it holds you nicely and it think its getting better look closer in prob could just go a tiny it more then its fibreglass time

I've said it before, but one thing on naked Busa's that hurts my eyes
is that top radiator hose. It comes out the rads front and go's down and under.
Mine had the stub cut off, blanked off and moved to the back, helps a little.

Is the BKing fan an easy fit?

Tony Nitrous
26-12-2015, 11:55 AM
B-Kings and (I think) Gen-2 Busa are twin fan.

Not sure if B-king and Gen-2 rads are the same?
I'd guess maybe not, although I've bought rad guards that had both
Gen-2 and B-King on the box there may be little differences.

Never fitted an extra fan to a Gen-1 but the Yanks seem to have cooling
issues and its been done several times on US forums.

Tony Nitrous
26-12-2015, 12:53 PM
Gen-1 fan is over in the left hand side.
Certainly looks like there's room for a 2nd
fan without too much drama.

A quick look at Gen-1 and B-King rads show them as
being of similar size and both hung from top mounts
that are around 300mm apart.

Nudie
26-12-2015, 06:14 PM
I don't like the Gen-1 hose coming out of the front either. If I you were to swap to a better looking rad, I thought it would double your chance of getting one if the Gen-2 and Bking are the same. But I guess there wouldn't be as many King rads around as they didn't sell that many compared to the Gen-2.

Tony Nitrous
26-12-2015, 09:01 PM
I think the Kings rad has the mounting points for the side scoops on it.
Kings rad would certainly be harder to find than a Gen-2.

King was only sold as an 08 model then a few 2010 models.
Gen-2 has been a steady seller for the last 8 years and heaps sold in the US.

hyofighter
26-12-2015, 09:31 PM
Worse case you could just get a gen2 end tank on as for wiring a second fan in that would be a breeze and extra cooling would be nice out here since its so farking hot

The Phantom
27-12-2015, 10:55 AM
The VTR tail gels nicely with the Busa tank/frame styling.

I see what you mean about the size of the tank but I think it actually works pretty good. But if you are curious about how it might look without that lower 'indented' part of the tank, swap your VFR tank onto the Busa... it looks to me like it might be the right size, and would do away with that lower section. Of course, then you'd have to hid/tidy up whatever is under there...
