View Full Version : Auto shifting project

I have been trying to motovate myself to start my auto shift project on the turbo gix.

I have always wanted wot shifting but one better would be full auto shifting controlled by my ecu for perfect shifts at the drags every time. Since we are drag racing in a couple of weeks thought I had better get my butt into gear

The plan is to use readily available components to keep the cost down and most importantly to keep it simple

Have done some research and paintball gear is cheap, small and easily sorced so I got myself a 68ci tank with a regulator that will reduce to 3500psi max presure down to 800psi. Then I have a second reg that will reduce the 800 psi down to 80-90 psi to activate my pnuematic cylinder.
Then cylinder will be attached to the shift rod so when the cylinder is activated it will initiate the gear change.

To complete the change we need some sort of WOT shift trigger to tell the ecu to kill the fuel and spark so the gearbox can change. To do this I am using a strain gauge to send that signal to the ecu. The ecu will send a signal to the solenoid ataring the shift sequence ar 9500rpm

A little tweaking of the ecu and we will have a working system.

For safety sake I will have a switch to arm the system and also the ecu will need to see more than 70% throttle and 60kph road speed to allow the system to work. So a big free rev won't trigger the system

Worked out how I will mount everything.

Tank will go on the right side subframe stay

Second reg on the left stay

The cylinder will mount off 1 of the engine mount bolts. Was pretty much made for it as only needs a 12mm spacer behind the cylinder to line it up with the shift rod.
Will make an adapter to adapt to the shift rod using a rod end on the end of the cylinder shaft

I saw those pictures weeks ago, is it finished yet :)

no

the low pressure reg is stuffed. someone has tightened up the input thread to tight cracking the hex in 3 places causing aire to spew out. am now on the hunt for a new one. proving harder than expected.

the strain gauge is on the way. once that arrives i can make my new shift rod and work out the adapter to the rodend/cylinder.

got another regulator tho other day. did some bench testing and all works well.

made a new shift rod and the adapter to connect the cylinder to the shift rod.

fitted the quick shifter strain gauge and set up the ecu accordingly. tested it last night and seems to work great on the paddock stand but will have to test on the road to know for sure if the kill time is adequate and the sensing weight is adjusted correctly within the switch.

have set up the ecu to output the correct signal for the solenoid and also the input from the strain gauge.

due to lack of time i have had to make a simple bracket to mount the air tank on the swingarm using 2 rear hugger mount tabs.

hope to finish the bracket tonight so i can do some testing on the road tomorrow or friday night.

after that is all ok just have to change the read wheel over to the shinko hook up and put in the shorter dog bones, add the straps to the front end and cut down a side stand for when the bike is lowered.

Got the bottle mount finished tonight. Seems pretty solid.
Will try to get the bottle filled tomorrow.
All the wiring is finished. Activated the 2 step in the ecu and tested that.
Will head out tomorrow night and test the quick shifter but if I can get the bottle filled I will be testing the complete auto shift system

are you using 2 rams or one

Deano
27-11-2014, 11:12 PM
Just 1. Up shifts only.
Got the bottle filled. Tried out the quick shifter but will know more when I get to the track. It doesn't want to shift at lower rpm. The harder you go the smoother it is

So........Have you attached it to the standard gear lever?? Or the the gear lever shaft??? Do you still run a lever with that system as well???

Deano

Attached to the shift rod. More fettling required tonight tho. The quick shifter is not playing ball. It seems very unreliable

we have been using these at the drags for years you can get a inline air activated switch to send the signal as well it maybe better, you can move the kill point to ram activation by moveing the two closer together or futher apart there was a guy on a ducati at the ride days who was paralised and had up and down shift on his bike

Deano

It would seem the issue is the location of the ram. The strain gauge senses a bend in the shift rod and sends the signal. When you shift manually the shift rod bows up and when shifting with te ram the shift rod doesn't really how at all therefore not sending the kill signal. To get around this I will have to make a new mount for the Ram to mount off the shift lever. I won't get this finished in time so will have to finish off another day. Disconnecting the ram also allowed the shift rod to be a little less ridgid therefore the sensor tended to work a little better . To late for a test tonight. Will test in the morning

Scratch that. We are good to go. Bloody rough job but hopefully will work

How did it go Deano?

Deano

Not so good.

The mega dollar strain gauge didn’t seem to be giving a reliable signal to the ecu. Tested it on the race stand and worked fine but during a run it wouldn’t work at all.
Riding down the return road it would work,

Very frustrating.
I just disconnected it all and rode it the old school way.
Think I have fucked a clutch now anyway. It was shuddering bad as usual and know when the clutch is pulled in there is no break it the drive to the wheel so suspect something a miss.

I had a thought last night that maybe I should be using a high speed input pin the to the ecu instead of just a regular input.

I asked a question on the autronic forum and my thought was confirmed, I will be changing the input pin to one of the high speed sensing inputs, this could have been the problem all along. Will test after the change and report back.

Deano if you're chasing info on how to do this PM Burnsie, (Motomax on here) and ask him. He was building these as kits back in the glory days in the UK and runs one on his mt01 daily and id be surprised if he couldn't help you.

All fixed. Just changed the input pin to the ecu and presto a perfect working quickshifter. I turned on the auto shift and it works a treat. Set it for 5000rpm changes and it changes up the box perfectly.

Just need to adjust the kill time and cut method. Currently have 60ms and ignition and fuel cut but when it changes the kill is to fierce and is not smooth so will change to fuel only cut first and see if that smoothest things out. I predict it will.

Saweeeeet. Would have been cool to give that a crack at the drags

Deano
03-12-2014, 02:47 PM
yes it would have cause i have to tune the shift time. 60ms might be good at 5000 rpm but to much at 9000rpm
the kill time can be variable based on things like engine speed and current gear so if the change from 1-2 needs more kill time than the change from 4-5 then you can easily tune it to the exact time you feel best. also you might need a different kill time for the 4-5 change at 5000rpm compared to the 4-5 change are 10000rpm. all these shift points at different rpm and gear changes can be tuned for best performance.

i can see myself finding a reasonable setting and sticking with that.

I use 40 MS but still testing.

seems Ok under street conditions but could be sharpened up a little maybe when getting up it!

I have fuel & ign cut!
