Help needed - Bought bike with airbox removed.
1. Is it O.K. to go with individual pod filters ?
2. What is involved ? ie.mechanic wants to install a power commander and tune on the Dyno ($950 !!!)

You will need a tune on a dyno, I would stay away from Power commanders though.. ecu editor, bike interceptor to name a couple of better options..
a better option is get a standard airbox and fit that!!

Go to the welcome threads and say hello or the flame will come out ..

A power commander shouldn't set you back more than 3-4 hunge. Less for second hand.

Tuning a power commander should only take an hour or two- so maybe 200-2fiddy.

I think one of the members here- "rock hard" is running pods on his dragbike 1400.

I've got an airbox for one of those but no rubbers.

I don't think you can pm Morry without getting up 10 posts.

Can you post up a pic of your bike?

And do the hello thing too plox.

Power commanders work well on the 14. I have one on mine.
The 14 doesn't have a real smart ECU and flashing knowledge is limited.

This isn't the 1980's / 1970's.
Airbox's on modern bikes work well.

I've ran Pods on many bikes, CB's, Kats, Zeds.
My 14 came with 4 DNA pods still in the box,
they were never going to be used by me and are lined up for an OldSkool project.

Problem is I'm no mechanic !

When I bought the bike interstate and got it home found there were NO pods or ANY filters and it was sucking fresh air....(had instant heart attack).

So if I take it to specialist mechanic, the pod route is significantly cheaper but I worry about loss of performance and filtration and how do you keep water out.
Mechanic would rather install another standard airbox but this really blows the cost out because I've heard you have to move the engine to fit airbox and time costs money + cost of secondhand airbox.

I'm talking $2000 +

Feel like I'm really screwed on this one.................Where do i go from here ?

Move the engine!!?

This mechanic is taking you for a ride mate.

A standard box would fit in with the same ease as any old school GSXR (hence the GSX1400 motor above fitted into a GSXR1100 frame).

It's this easy in there:

Just find yourself one on ebay and thern come back here for instructions. Forget pods, too much hassle at the end of the day (especially if you're not mechanically minded).

Sorry Si the airbox wont go in after the moteur is in.

It won't fit over the big fuckoff breather box thingy ontop of the gearbox...and yes I've tried it.

I've had other bikes that the only way to remove the airbox was to remove
the engine or cut the f#ckin' thing up. I can only imagine the airbox go's
into the frame before the motor.

.... and 14 motors don't go into GSX or GSXR frames.
The 14 motor is much too wide to fit between the lower frame rails.
Those I've seen done, ET, Kat and GSXR had had some serious surgery
to butcher and widen the lower frame cradle.

Well that's fucked. Why would old mate have taken the motor out, left the airbox out, and then put nothing in it's place? Ah, I guess Tony answered that. He's hacked it up hasn't he?

Sorry for the dud information Rotary, I was unaware of the big "breather box thingy" on top of the gear box and was only going by what looked to be a simple set up.

Rich: Does the engine need to be totally removed or just unbolted and twsited?

I'd say totally removed.

Another option,

Have a go, or find someone who's game to try,
make up an air box, could be alloy, fibre glass, plastic, carbon fibre,
anything you want, make it to fit a cheap and easily available
Supercheap / Repco off shelf filter, and make it in two
or 3 bits so it can be assembled in the frame.
I'd even consider doing this to a factory air box.

I understand your reason for wanting pod filters,
but from my own experience modern injected motors work
well with a big still air chamber like an air box.

Similar to Tony's idea but instead of a air "Box" Make a manifold out of Ali that links all 4 TB's together with venturi's then run one big pod , air will be much like a air box and flow well. Easy to fit , relitively cheap and a car pod's are dime a dozen. This is sort of what I mean

Things to keep in mind when drawing it up would be length of original rubber trumpets in original air box (try to keep your new ones about the same size both length and dia/venturi shape and the distance from carb to back wall of manifold should be around the same as carb to original filter. Pod filter can then be pritty much anything you like that flows the same or better than the stock filter and you'll be in the correct ball park for the efi to be close to happy.

But I'd mount a single pod behind the motor and use the side panels to cover it (giving you some weather protection in the rain) My unit is one pod cut in half and modded (I like ugly bikes as you can see)
