project dirt fighter 2, 1995 zxr 750

Now as much as i love the trench wench the 260kg and the shaft drive are letting me down , the shaft is working fine but no ratio swaps makes usability of the engine and gear box a no go , plus the weight although good for traction is no good when she gets all crossed up , so on the hunt for something else i came across this zxr 750 cheap . its a runner but they have put the wrong engine oil in and the clutch is slipping , apart from that she is all good

so being a 750 puts me down a class at the bigger events unless i put the bottle on it but i dont think being 750 will efect it to much , in standard trim they are about 15 odd hp more than the gsx1100g and nearly 40kg lighter , torque is a bit lower though , but i now have chain drive to play with gearing , i can put swingarm extentsions in for a wider tyre and the weight saving

so flat black is on the agenda again and sticking with trench wench this one will be trench wench jnr , i pick up from tom this wicked tail race glass i make a subby for and i have a busted ebay light ill repair for the front i have a new tyre coming over to the west as i type this with less paddles though i still am keen on this tyre from states that on the trumpy below, ebay has the extentsions and lowering links , now its just to find some time to get stuck into it

next I was on the hunt for a front tyre , last time I used a kenda track master and its been great but its not tubeless and the sidewall height just looks funky and required the guard lift , so I hit up the net in search of a conti tkc80 and came across some one selling a second handy pair front and rear , wasn't to fussed on having a rear but it will come into use on the hard tracks ill just track down a spare rear rim , 180 55 17 she is chunky and wide should be pretty good and the front being 120 70 17 she should fit with out modding the guard hopefully

so it was out with the wheel to paint it fit the tyre and inspect the bearing which are a bit sad so ill replace them , chain is cactus but wont be long enough anyhow and im not sure what im doing for gearing yet

so the swingarm extensions are not for my model they do upto 94 and 96 on did hear gix 600 ones fit but after much reading and research all that I found was different in the 95 to 96 was the 96 had a different calliper setup and no stay arm , so I took a punt and ordered some , so turns out there a perect fit everywhere except the axle hole , both models share the same axle and length but it turns out the hole is slightly forward on the 95 nothing major just the tinyest amount so a little relieving will sort it

so tonight with the die grinder a little touch up there in nice fit nice and tight look good and give it 4-9" at full extension , surprisingly I gave the wheelbase a quick measure against the trench wench with the extensions its only 60mm longer , was not expecting that , thought it would be heaps more but the gsx has a long rake and the zxr is compact in the front so everything motorwise is further forward as well as the seating position , will be interesting to see how she handles

so since then what have I done , well the wheels in and fits perfect swapping the tyres with small bike lever can suck a fat one too , but it looks awesome . Next was with the extensions fitted the back was sky high so I looked into lowering links on ebay and one ad gave the dimensions so I just made some knock ups to get the height right , so far the rear has dropped 3" and seems to sit level , the rear is soft now due to the length but that's minor details at the moment

so back into it since the season start is not far away and i have shit loads to do so back on the bench and strip it down to get rid of whats not needed, tidy up some of the wiring and fix up some of the general bodgyness thats been done to this bike over its life time

first thing was to fix up the tank mount , the jerk had just ran some teks through it to hold it down since the original nutserts were rooted , fixed now but

then i discovered the airbox has no filter in it luckly its clean as a whistle in there

the busted and tek screwed gear side rearset was horrid so yella came to the rescue with these 9r ones and thery fit perfect

next was to remove the breather system gear from what i can gather by looking at it is that the airbox being air ram has these vac controlled units so positive pressure doesnt force the fumes back in the crack case and fuel bowls ??? either way there coming off and ill have a catch can instead

convieniently all these vac ports and hosing under the carbs thats not needed could make a great spot for a direct port no2 jets

next was some more bodgyness found under the tank , some shit fittings and the hose was just clamped over the threaded fitting , will have to sort something out here as there is no reserve and the fuel pump doesnt look to be the right one and the wiring is shit

back to it , so I did some research before binning all that breather system and it turns out its the best thing you can do to them , over engineered air ram/breather emissions crap , so I did the removal and the airbox fuel bowl mod so fingers crossed it all good

then finished off the wiring cables rerouted , the brake line wasn't long enough so out with the tape and down to motorcycle masters and a rummage through there parts I found a rf900 one to be perfect so front end sorted , the old mini ressies of the yzf fitted on and mounted a little agricultural but it works , bars painted , front conti tyre fitted (its pretty sweet) then it was time to paint the rest of it

last things to do fit new clutch fibres , fit 2 stage rev limiter , fit chain and new wheel bearings in the rear wheel , all before 11th oct haha good luck to me , but luck is happening , I ordered my long chain from the us on 25th and I got it yesterday 6 day including the weekend that's bullshit , aus post lift your game

new lowering links made up to get it just right but that extension and im guessing the longer links have made the rear really soft

And now for the finished product , im pretty happy how it turned out and how it performed on the day , some more traction would be nice and a stiffer rear but im on to that . the 2 step was awesome on the day just perfect that I can dial in the agro-ness off the line with the throttle wide open and dropping the clutch just hanging on to it and hoping for the best , the paddle tyre I had to take of on race day the track just was to hard but the conti did well just the soft rear letting it down but you cant ask to much from a tyre with 100+ hp and wide open throttle lauches in the dirt , just some more time in the saddle is needed and this thing should be a rocket once dialled in its showing potential with the original trench wench only crossing the top of the 200mtr track at 120kph this thing the best I got on the day was 133kph and that's only going to get better
