Hi guys
Im from Newcastle NSW. Been riding bikes since i was little mostly just trail etc then got my road licence and moved on to road bikes. I own a hyosung 2010 650r. Absolute hunk of junk but everyone has to start somewhere. I mostly work on bikes and cars with the old man. He has 10 or so bikes each serving a different purpose. They range from Kawasaki triples, RD250s, katanas, MUZs and a TRX 850.

I started to "streetfighter" my Hyo as one day I was looking at its ugly ass and decided it needed a facelift. I also had little to no $$ to spend on a new bike and knew the Hyo didnt owe me anything. I have a small mechanical apptitude and decided what better way to learn then to rip it apart and put bits back together. All fairings have been removed, painted headers, rear sets, radiator black. I've completely removed the instrument panel and headlight and looking at running a small gauge and twin dominator headlight. I picked up a 1997 ZX9r front end and looking to do a swap once I find somewhere to make a steering stem to fit. Then going to look at the rear end and shock.
My main aim is to make it almost unrecogniseable whilst learning a bit along the way
Cheers guys

In stocko mate. The RDs will never be for sale. Old man is almost retired and the biggest hoarder. He's only just discovered eBay so imagine that!! Only photos on the phone but was going to start some sort of build thread. Ill post some photos here though as well :) we had both muz tourer and sports model. The tourer has since found a new home and the sports model has become the "weight reduction" project! Haha. They sound really good for a single. So different to everything else

Alright guys quick question. After a short slip on exhaust. Doesn't need to be fancy. I have a yoshi rs3 pipe at the moment and its far too long. Was thinking about doing a chop with small gp style pipe. Although is there a way to baffle it and make sure no one looks over and says to themselves "oh that sounds great.. Oh wait.. It's only a hyosung"...

Looking at something similar to this. Is it a matter of finding something with a similar diameter and cutting and welding to suit? Also I have a bung just before the muffler flange which I'm guessing is an 02 sensor. Is it better to leave as is an put the slip on behind it? Or look at possibly moving it further forward? Thanks in advance fellas

I don't really like that style of exhaust, but it's your bike. I do like shorty cans though, just cut down the one you currently have. Easy enough to do. Drill the rivets out and take the sleeve off. Cut down to the desired length and the measure the off-cut and cut the same length off the inner pipe. Rivet back together and job dobe

How to "Make a Shorty can"
Submitted by EXBEN (Ben Shaw - Extreme Creations)

http://streetfighters.com.au/images/howto/shor_can/101586441864640.jpg

A few weeks ago we were talkin bout makin 'Shorty' can's,so I thought I'd do a run down of what you need to do, in case anyone want's to have a go & is not sure how to attack it.

"I should at this point mention that this is NOT a be all & end all guide so if you Fuck up don't blame me"

You'll need at least a Drill & usually a 4.9mm bit,an angle grinder with a 1mm thick cutoff wheel,a flap disk for the grinder is also handy,a small punch & something to hit it with, some 4.9mm stainless rivets & pop rivet gun,a file, a texta, a tape measure & steel ruler.

I'm sure I've missed something but we'll work it out as we go along.
The can I'm cutting down here is an Akrapovic oval Titanium, similar to the one above(I forgot to take a pic before I started).

First drill the rivets out of the inlet end, sometimes the heads come off & then they just spin, you may need to punch through any stuck ones so they clear the band & the outer skin, the band should come off (take note of where the join is),the inlet end should now pull out, this will take some force & can be tricky to grip onto,I use a small steel hook to pull from the retaning spring pickups, you may need help from a friend for this step.
The perforated core is attached to the inlet end( This is not always true for all brands)& will come out with it.

Some cans may require you to drill out & remove the outlet end as well to remove the core.

If the packing doesn't come out with the core, pull it out now.

Your can should now look like this:

http://streetfighters.com.au/images/howto/shor_can/1015864431112929.jpg

You can now mark how much you want to cut off the outer skin & inner core(cut the same amount off each),be sure to mark how much you want to cut off NOT how much you want left because the inner & outer are usually different lengths.

I use a height gauge but a tape measure or ruler will also work, just be sure your lines are straight.

If the inner core steps down or up in diameter at the end you want to cut off you may need to grind off the welds at the other end & shorten it there then have it welded back on.

This one was nice & straight.

http://streetfighters.com.au/images/howto/shor_can/1015864431104422.jpg

Now use your grinder with the 1mm cutoff wheel & carefully cut both the inner & outer ( on the rubbish side of the line please).

http://streetfighters.com.au/images/howto/shor_can/1015864431111680.jpg

Now clean up the ends,I use a disk sander but a Grinder with a flap disk will also work. Then debur the edges inside & out ,using a flap wheel or file.

http://streetfighters.com.au/images/howto/shor_can/1015864431125227.jpg

If the packing is in good nick you can use the cutoff wheel( as it gives a nice cut), to cut the same amount off,if your packing is stuffed you can get more from most bike shops.

http://streetfighters.com.au/images/howto/shor_can/1015864431178519.jpg

Now carefully refit the packing to the inner core & feed the whole lot into the outer skin ( make sure you have the end cap around the right way). You may need to deform the skin slightly with your hand to get it to go over the end cap,at the same time look inside the outlet end & make sure the core is lining up with the end cap before you start trying to force them together.

Now push or lightly tap them together so that you can still see part of the rivet holes.
Line the band up with the end of the outer skin( Making sure you've got the join in the right spot),then mark the rivet holes onto the skin with a texta ( don't drill them yet).

http://streetfighters.com.au/images/howto/shor_can/1015864431111134.jpg

Tap the end cap in till it's in the right spot then drill the hole through the skin (with your 4.9mm bit)opposite to where the band join is.
Rivet this one in place. Now work your way around evenly both ways drilling & riveting as you go.

I do it like this cause when you get to the last hole it can be out to where your texta mark is( your only using the texta marks as a guide). If you had drilled this previously when you put the rivet in it will want to lift the band off the skin in some spots & it looks like shit.

http://streetfighters.com.au/images/howto/shor_can/1015864431119663.jpg

So you should end up with something like this (no gaps).
That's it you now have a shorty can!

This one started out at 470mm (Skin length) & we cut off 170mm
giving us a nice short 300mm can.

The only question now is how short will you go!

Cheers

MMMMM.........170mm can anyone?

Thanks mate! I'm a little worried about chopping up my carbon yoshi.. I want to bring myself to do it haha. It is a budget fighter after all.. Was thinking about picking up a spare exhaust and chopping it up. More worried about the O2 sensor bung just before the muffler flange. Don't know how to weld so I think relocating it is out of the question

you know what, that with a mini pointy belly pan just to brake the visual line of that gap from wheel to motor and maybe a high singal round head light mounted high keeping the clip ons i think would look horn

wilso8948
06-04-2014, 01:58 PM
Yep belly pan is on the cards.
Probably will run dirty bars. Going to keep it clean and subtle. Probably will run some hello or dominator headlights. Pretty much blacked out everything and will look smick once the new front end goes on. Thanks mate

welcome man , been and done the hyo thing myself , personally it was a great bike but copped a bit of flack for what it was , still it was a hoot to ride and surprised a few , this was my build a long while ago so most of the pics are missing but youll get the idea

Hey mate yeh I'd seen your bike. What headlights did u use? I'm looking at doing something unique I guess. Normally with cars I try and stay with bolt on mods and everything that's model specific but I thought with this project I coul have a bit of a play and make things fit. Am almost finished organising all the front end parts for the zx9r fork swap. Then may look at phase two with the rear and maybe fit a vfr SSSA or gsxr swing arm and new rear shock.
The tough part is finding nice looking modifications on a budget whilst not spending stupid amounts that will end up being such overkill on a pretty rubbish bike.
Although problem might be solved.. Trying to convince my fiancé to get her licence so that I can get a new bike and she can have this. Plus then I can chop up the subframe and have a play with that without having her be upset that she can't come on rides :)
