Another vfr in perth cool . I fitted a 929/954 front on mine but you also could go later model cbr1000r and sp1/2 also seen a few swap r1 fronts on with relative ease . Cb1000 is another option youll find honda were pretty good with interchangability

welcome to . You might want to go to the welcome section and introduce your self there if your planning on sticking around

Personally I wouldn't buy any forks that I couldn't verify as straight. I got my complete 2004 R1 front end from San Diego, and sure enough the rim was dinged (fixed) and the fork uppers were bent (irrepairable).

For the record, the R1 front end can go into a VFR with just a change of top bearing - I used CBR929 triples for mine, but that meant spacers for the rotors and axle, whereas the R1 triples are a straight bolt in! Look here for info on using the R1 triples, the specific info on making it work starts at post #25:

http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php/topic/66526-r1-usd-fork-swap/

"The (top) bearing you need to do the swap is R1 dimension inside, VFR dimensions outside, 47mm OD, 33mm ID & 17mm high."

Good luck with your search.

hows the stem length with the r1 tripples ? i know the cbr929/954 was a straight swap no mods for bearings and stem length the only thing was the steering stops , but drilled and tapped them out and made them adjustable ,but is getting a bit old fashioned now , a nice new r1 forks if they are 50mm and 54mm might slip straight in the honda triples and you would be set

Scotty the R1 uppers are indeed 50/54mm and here's what they look like in CBR929 triples. Well, not exactly, the gold uppers here are off a ZX-10R, the lowers, wheel, brakes and rotors are all 2004 R1 though. My bike:

However, the CBR fork centre-to-centre spacing is 214mm, while the R1 is 210mm. This means your forks are 4mm further apart than Yamaha made them to be, so you need spacers. And because you can't space the calipers like on an earlier R1, you need to space the rotors off the wheels - 2mm per side, and you need longer rotor bolts too. Plus an additional 2mm axle spacer on either side of the wheel.

I have one-piece rotor spacers made of titanium, and one piece axle spacers that are 2mm wider than the factory R1 spacers. But that's a lot of trouble to go to...

The R1 stem length is fine for a VFR - at least in the 2004-2006 R1 model range, can't speak for earlier or later R1s. This one is in a 5th Gen, but 5th/6th Gen has same steering head dimensions as 34d/4th Gen. Not my bike:

All you need is that bearing to go up top! VFR outer diameter, R1 inner diameter.

Sweet food for thought for my next version of mine . Had similar issues when i fitted the late model cb wheels to my cbr forks . Disk spacing was fine but my hub centre is offset on those rims and axle size smaller so hub was machined to take the cbr bearings anf axle and new spacers made for the offset . I do like that set up your running but

929 954 R1 you still have the same issue in Aus you will pay through the nose , paypal dispute if they are not as discribed is about all you can do. And try to buy from reputable sellers, not jim bob from out buttfuck.

James if you do decide to do something the bits you dont need take them to motorcycle masters and get your front end from them they always have looked after me as well as many western asfers are always keen on good cond parts to trade

phantom, did you go the cbr triples to keep the trail?

Hi James - no, I started my USD conversion in 2006 (!) and back then most people on VFRD were buying VTR SP1 (RC51) front ends, or using CBR929/954 triples with SP1 forks (the Blade forks are a tad short, although they do work ok).

So I just followed the sheep :) But because I wanted radial calipers, I did some measurements and bought a complete R1 front end from the US, and then got hold of the 929 triples. I might have been the first to try the R1 forks/wheel on a VFR, but it wasn't hard to work out the 2mm per side spacers. VFRD/OzVFR member zRoYz works faster than me - most people do - and he convincingly proved that those forks/wheel/brakes in 929 upper and SP1 lower triple worked a treat.

BTW - SP2 top triple will NOT work, the SP2 stem is massively larger in diameter than the SP1 stem. You need SP1 (flat) or 929/954 (gullwing) if going the Honda triples route.

The VFRD topic on making R1 forks/triples work (linked a few posts back) is continuing to evolve. There is a lot of discussion about trail. 98-01 R1 triples have 35mm trail, closest of the R1s to the VFR, each R1 generation has had less trail than the last.

OK, courtesy of the VFR Discussion topic we now have some definitive figures on R1 trail and it doesn't look too bad!

Scotty I am working on a VFR topic for ASF that will collate all this stuff into one place.

Go have a dig around at VFRD when you get a chance, the number of custom builds there is increasing all the time. As well as the R1 front end stuff we are doing coil-on-plug research, Triumph rear hub/eccentric into VFR swingarm (takes a Triumph wheel or - if you take 30mm off the axle and re-thread it, a Duc wheel), cush drive delete, wiring mods, rearsets... lots of fun :)
