the air cushion is created through positive pressure above the piston, so on the downstroke will it become an oil pump? strike that, the pics clear it up

I've got an old set of Arias pistons that look like that...
Main issue is that fucking scotch yoke bottom end - there's a mob in melbourne who've been trying to get a scotch yoke motor up and running for 10 years or so - related maybe?
