Hi all
I'm just coming to the end of my VFR750 build (are they ever finished?) and thought I'd chuck up a thread in case anyone was interested.

It all started a few months ago when I was hunting around for a project.

Even crashed bikes here in NZ command silly money and trying to find something half decent and reasonably cheap is damn near impossible. Ideally I wanted something that had been chucked down the road and not written off by an insurance company.
I was looking out for a CBR or similar when I saw a stripped '94 VFR for sale and thought I'd make some enquiries. It was still a runner but had been cannibalized of parts to rebuild another VFR after the owner hit a cow.

I spent the next couple of weeks sounding out the guy via email as I didn't think it rang quite true. Why would you strip a running bike to rebuild a crashed one....? Turns out the running bike had been buggered about with and most of the wiring was chopped thru or missing. The clocks had disappeared and a Vapour unit had been fitted (badly). None of the locks worked (except the ignition switch) and the seat was held in place with a bungy cord. Perfect :)5106

During this time I also trawled the internet looking for fightered VFR's and to get a few ideas. That's when I came across Hyofighters build thread (very nice build it is as well).
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/showthread.php?9411-hyofighters-got-a-new-fighter-project/page1

In the end I decided to go and take a look at what the guy had for sale so made the 4 hour trip to Hawkes Bay with trailer in tow, and after a quick test ride a deal was done and the bike was loaded up.

5107

That evening eBay was hit hard, the Paypal account was hit harder.

After a bit of research I came up with a plan of attack.
I would do a complete dry build, and then tear it down for paint etc, before doing a final reassembly.

First thing was to strip the Viffer front end and sub frame
5109

A phone call to a bike breakers in Hamilton found what I was looking for so a little road trip (16hrs there and back!) and the deal was done.
The VFR front end was swapped for a K7 GSXR1000 front.
5110

And a B-King guard was also sourced from his shed of bits.

5111

An email to evolutionsuspension.com for a 30x47x15 bearing and it all bolted together like a bought one.
5112

With the front end sorted it was time to start on the rear.

Cleverchap
03-12-2013, 06:22 AM
Whilst researching the rear end conversion I found out Yamaha 2007-08 R1 rear sets had the same bolt spacing as the VFR footrest hangers.
A quick hunt on eBay and a set were on the way.
51135114

The gear shift had to be modified but it was easily sorted.

Cleverchap
03-12-2013, 07:08 AM
The rear end was going to be R1 as well, but at the last minute I changed my mind and went for something a whole lot more European.
5115 5116
Ducati 1098 to be precise. (note load bearing beer bottle :) )

The entire subframe, both seats, tail unit and single seat cover, undertray, exhaust y-pipe and end cans and all the little Ducati only (bloody expensive) fasteners came from a breakers in Texas.

Cleverchap
03-12-2013, 07:16 AM
Very little alteration was needed to get the Ducati subframe to fit the VFR.
A quick tickle with the welder and it all came together.
5117 5118

And a plate was welded in for the battery to sit on
5119

This little area also holds the starter relay, indicator relay, fuel pump cut off solenoid and CDI unit. Its very tight when everything is in there.

At about this point my Renthal fatbars and clamps arrived, so back to the front for fitting.

Last couple of bits where the MT-03 headlight and the Koso RX1N gauge unit
5122 5123

The bike was then farmed out the local exhaust builders who made the Y-pipe connect to the rest of the system and also removed the butterfly valve
As the exhaust guy is in the same direction as the local bucket track we decided to go for a hoon at the same time.
5124

With the exhaust all connected, the stock Ducati end cans needed opening up.
5128

Some baffle pipe and packing was purchased
5127

Before
5125

After
5126
Much better :)

Now all that was left to do was pull it all apart and send it away for paint.

That tail works well mate! Nice choice.

Cleverchap
03-12-2013, 07:59 PM
Thanks for the complement. I reckon it works well and I'm happy with how it turned out.

Cleverchap

So the paints came out and we got some colour on the frame and swinger
5132

5133

As soon as it was dry I started bolting it back together.
It was easier to put the frame over the engine and then worry about getting it up on the stands.
5134

Once the bottom triple was in place the front stand could be used and forks were slid in to place.
5135

And finally (for now) the wheels went back on and the wiring began.
5136

I'd done about 80% of the wiring during the dry build so knew where everything was going to sit, I just needed to sort final positions for a couple of bits and replace the reg/rec wiring which was burnt out.

Whilst I was doing the wiring (funking big job) the body work was being prepped and sprayed.

Sadly under the strip lights (and with my crapy iPhone camera) you cant make out the pearl

Cleverchap
04-12-2013, 10:49 AM
Panel all fitted up and its all just about ready to rock.

5139

I need to get a couple of last bits to finish it off and then it'll go for a warrant.

I don't think its bad going considering I bought the bike 11 weeks ago.

11 weeks!!?!
Anything longer than a weekend is excessive...

The tail is nice, but there is not enough of it.
The rest of the bike looks stout and purpouseful, but it gets a little flamboyant towards the end.
It is by far the best VFR on here but the tail doesn't match the rest of the bike.
More surface area and more angle and you are on a winner.

Cleverchap
04-12-2013, 09:25 PM
Thanks for the feedback. The last pic doesn't have the undertail exhausts fitted. The arse end has a bit more substance to it once they are on, but I hear what you are saying

I did some tidying of the wiring tonight and got the tail tidy/licence plate fitted up.
Now I need to find some fuel hose, get the front wheel back from the bike shop with the new tyre fitted and get the bugger warranted.

Thanks for the comments all.

I thought it was going a bit to well.
I took it for a road test the other night and the battery isn't changing.
A look at the wiring revealed a burnt out reg/rec so I swapped it out for a new one but still no joy :-(
I have checked the generator and it pumps out a decent AC voltage on all 3 windings but have ordered a new one from the US as I can't get the bloody thing to charge!!

I just hope it arrives before Christmas.....

Any ideas/suggestions welcomed

Hmmmmm

5155

And now I just have to wait for the new one to arrive.
It better get here before Christmas or I can kiss my holiday goodbye :(

Aftermarket speedo sensor mounted up. It took ages to find a nice place for it to sit and not stick out like dogs balls.
5167

The great news is the generator has arrived in NZ so fingers crossed it'll be delivered early next week.

I mounted my speedo sensor on the rear caliper bracket and ran the wire along the brake lines to keep it clean.

Looks good on the front too, just harder to hide wires usually

Well it has been a while since I updated this as I have been busy in the shed getting the last few bits and bobs sorted.
This morning it passed the WOF and is now fully legal :)

5180

So off to Wanganui for the Cemetery Circuit racing on Boxing day and then I'll do a little road trip around the top of the North Island for a few days.

It was all going so well....
The reg/rec has sh*t itself again so the bike is down and out waiting for parts to arrive.
This wouldn't have been so bad but it decided to break down 900kms from my house.

It should be recovered in the next week or so and then I can crack on fitting the new parts.

Cruisecontrol

Bummer about the reg/rec but as you said, those pipes fill in the space nicely.
Looks great!

It'll be up and running soon enough. Sounds fooking awesome so will have to get a video up soon as well. :)

love the blue mate but I don't like the white tin work ! but if we all had the same taste then what a boring place it would be !!
personally I like the duck tail !

I was going to use the 1098 seat but went the KTM RC8 tail instead , hows the heat from the tail??

Cleverchap
27-01-2014, 07:53 PM
New battery on the bike but now I have no spark........ fucking electrics!!

Heat isn't too bad as I've removed the cats and baffles from the stock end cans.
I have heard that stock cans can get bloody hot.

ALBI
27-01-2014, 09:04 PM
Hmmmm is NZ same as AUS with emision,s ??

Here in the land of OZ it's a $10,000 plus fine if EPA , RTA "oops make that the RMS now " catch you removing cataliyic converters and a $20,000 plus fine for a workshop if they do it.

Was the bike running before you changed the battery ??

Does your VFR have HISS ?

Cleverchap
28-01-2014, 05:02 PM
Oh cock. No idea, plead ignorance. Was like tat when I got it, etc etc hahahahaha

The bike cut out as if kill switch had been hit, when I stopped at the side of the road I noticed a sulphry smell and saw the battery buldged out.
I assumed the battery was kippered and thought a new one would have it up and running.

I have tested the bike and there is no power to the coils. Now thinking either pulse generator or CDI has died.

Cleverchap
28-01-2014, 05:04 PM
I'm not sure if it was coincidence but the headlight blew at the same time.....

fimpBIKES
29-01-2014, 11:22 AM
and you are sure the regulator is ok?
sounds like its getting spikes through the system...

love the bike btw, even if it is a dirty honda!

Looking good mate, where are you?

Cleverchap
06-02-2014, 06:00 PM
Bike now back up and running.
I have replaced the entire charging system and the CDI. Now runs like a good 'un.

Whilst it was off the road I took the opportunity to change up the arse a wee bit.
50mm lift, 7mm shock spacer to quicken the steering and a plate relocation.

5344

Seriously chuffed to fuck with how its looking :)

xa-mont
06-02-2014, 07:08 PM
very nice indeed. Reckon you'll get in trouble for the plate location over there in In Zid?

Cleverchap
06-02-2014, 09:00 PM
There are a few guys and girls running plates in the same place so I should be good. Thankfully NZ (for now) isn't hammering bikers.
kiwi kdx I'm down in Wellington.

Great build! Great minds think alike because I built something very similar 3 years ago. My buddy still owns this bike. He loved it so much he bought it from the guy I sold it too
