Hypothetically, what would one pay for a hypothetical TL1000S?

The hypothetical bike in question is in pretty ratty hypothetical cosmetic condition, with no front fairing just the light.

It hypothetically has around 40000km's on the clock.

Soooooo??? Ball park figures?

TL1000S' are for POOOOFS... also Italian V-twins are for girly men.....:p

I'd say possibly between $2500 - $4000

You are a generous man Gitzy. Personally I'd say depending on rattyness and any service history etc anywhere from $1000 to $2500...

So what should a hypothetical person look out for on a tl? Any common problems?

Keep an eye out for damaged steering stops - I know of couple of early (no steering damper from factory) TL1000S that have head shook hard enough to damage the stops... will give you an idea of how much of a hiding they've copped (or, well, the size of the balls of the rider).
Steering bearings cop a flogging from wheelying, and the stupid rear dampers on them are shit, so keep an eye out for if it's been upgraded with a Bitubo shock (or the budget job of adapting a R1 rear damper with no spring onto them).

cracks around the rear damper or rear damper mounts broken, need to be repaired to mount ohlins maxton penske etc ... can be very hard to see if the damper is still in situ

siezed soas can cause bottom pivot to fail and or swinger damage

cracks around the front end of the frame on very early models .... but if the frames damaged i do have a brand new unstamped frame i could be persuaded to part with :)

What would you know about TLS's Mick?? ohhh hang on... carry on..

Basically they're a rolling death trap Trav plagued with problems but look purty & sound good. Only a fool would own one. So I would suggest you obtain hypothetical bike in question to see what all the fuss is about.

I reregistered mine yesterday sooo much fun keen for NFR on the weapon allbeit at my pee shooter weapon riding style.

Also theres the epic waiting lists for various bling..

I've never understood why they have such an ugly fuckign rollcage to support the upper fairing though.
