Hey guys my names Michael and I crashed my GSXR, full info on that is here (http://www.gsxr.com/showthread.php?p=1782169#post1782169).
I came from GSXR.com after being told that you guys organise rides in australia. I won't be coming on any for a while though as you see lol.

What I would like is sort of primer in building a streetfighter. I have basic mechanical skills, a shed full of tools, more sophisticated stuff at University, electronics background and a high curiosity.

I broke the headlights and the fenders.

The bike runs and is in relatively good condition.

So what i'm after is how should I go about trying to do this? Do I just look at other street fighters and try to copy them? I heard I need to change the handlebars and grab a headlight from the wreckers. I'd appreciate if you guys could give me general tips on where to look so I can get started, not asking for highly specific advice like If I get X product how can i make it fit, etc.

For info you can assume:
I'd want to put in a new, less expensive <$500 headlight.
Don't care about fairings.
Don't like the tail, I want to replace if with something smaller.
Possibly longer handlebars for more leverage.
Possibly bling it up a bit with some paint.
My absolute max budget is $1000.

Although as I said, I'm not after things like specific models but more general like whether I NEED to change out my handlebars or where can I get more info on headlights and headlight fenders+headlights.

My 2 cents worth ,Ask yourself what you want from the bike and why first, Ie my first streetfighter was/is a ugly bitch was ment to be always will be but mostly reliable and though no speed demon can go alright if I push (started with something slow and heavy and turned it into a rat fighter) .

Asking how to build a fighter is in my opinion not "The fighter way" Others will offer sugestion's but mostly its about doing it yourself I think. How will you be riding and how far will you have to ride to get to where you want to ride it ? Ie your into riding in the hills like me , but like me you live 30 min away from the closest hill. Or its for around town and you live in town.

Changes things a little , if your in town and expect to be pulled over often by the bronze a bike that will pass some scrutiny from a cop is prob more important than something your going to ride out in the country and prob only see the bronze once or twice a year. If your where your going to ride right now, peg positions/seating/bars more suited for spirited riding are fine but what if your planning on riding 6 hours to a NFR meet/ride would you make it that far without getting cramps and thinking this is shit.

Do you want it to look all bling ? or just pull the plastics and make it work ? All questions only you can answer once you have a plan then ask How to do x y z .

I would suggest getting it rideable first and spending the least amount of money possible.
That means forgetting the wreckers and trolling eBay for what you will need.
Once you are back on the road you can start modifying things over time to make it your own as its first reincarnation is rarely its last.

Thanks guys. I've started looking at bikes to see what others do and some peoples builds are quite elaborate.

Once I buy a light box it should be a simple matter of making it mount, tidying up the wires and taking it to get tires. That's all it needs to be roadworthy. What I want from the bike though is larger handlebars like on my old dirt bike, I don't like how small these race bike handle bars are and raise them a little since I spend quite a bit of time in the city. I'll also get cut frame sliders since I'm still learning and they will let me lean without being scared of a lowside destroying my bike but I realise if it tumbles i'm screwed. I also really don't like the tail it has to go so I'll look into what I need to do to change that.

Ideas, may or may not end up using them.
Bright single headlight, indicators integrated.
NOS bottle coolant overflow.
All wiring hidden or greatly minimized.
Hide fuse box,etc
Wide mx style handlebars
May have to custom build a battery box once tail is taken out and replaced with something smaller.
Black frame, repaint worn parts black.
Repair dint in tank.
Custom digital speedo.

Welcome aboard mate. As coincidence would have it, a new advertiser has just joined ASF that has everything you need to bolt on easily.

Check the MT03 headlight unit (with or without brackets) plus a variety of indicators: http://www.digital-speedos.co.uk/headlights-rear-lights-and-indicators-2-c.asp

and as for Speedos, well there is no better choice than this lot!:

http://www.digital-speedos.co.uk/koso-multi-function-gauges-1-c.asp

He has a heap more if you go to the top level, but the Koso ones are a cheaper brand and good quality. Also remember that he is in the UK so 20% will be knocked off the price when you check out.

As for handlebars, well there are things called comfort kits that are stright bolt on replacements, then all you need to do is grab a set of MX bars from your local accessory shop: http://www.topyokes.com/

You may also have worked out by now that Europe has a much better range of gear than anywhere in Australia for this kind of thing as that's where the Streetfighter culture / style started.

Excellent. Thanks for the links Gix there really is a huge selection out there in Europe. I'm starting to work out how to work on this bike now. I have my workshop manual, a few ideas, google and a credit card. :)

I think I'll start out really basic with a paint job and a new headlight. The MX bars are still a high priority but it's important I get it roadworthy and not looking like just a naked Gixxer.
