Pretty much what the topic says... I want a flat bar (drag bar style??) just a piece of pipe through the risers, now i want to know what it is i should ask for at the scrap metal places (eg. what grade steel, wall thickness, etc.) or if there is a source that i should go to that has simular products.

I'm all ears.

Cheers

I tried steel tube for drag bars on my first GS 1000, just got a bit of 7/8 mild from the local scrappy, cut it to size & blew a bit of black on it - it was a mistake [V]
You don't realise how much you need a bit of backward sweep on your handlebars until you don't have any, dead straight has your hands/wrists at an angle that feels awkward & wrong especially when you're at really slow speed like lane filtering, parking, taking off, etc.
Do yourself a favour & get a set of dragbars (a.k.a. flatbars) from your local bike shop/wreckers/Ebay/wherever, they cost about $20 - $30 in chrome or paint & you'll be glad you did because the slight sweep makes the riding position feel right.
Disregard all of the above if it's a dragrace only bike.

Try 22mm medical stainless tubing. Very strong stuff. Use a wall thickness of either 1.2 or 1.6mm and use a center punch to dimple the areas were it clamps into your risers. I used to make bars and thats what I used. It is easy to polish as well . Otherwise go to a specialist metals supplier like Performance Metals in South Windsor and get some 7/8ths DOM with a 0.060" or more wall thickness .
