After visiting Casa Del Large on the weekend & ogling his Kat I've found inspiration to get off my fat, lazy arse & get stuck into my own Katana collection so that I actually have one that I can ride.

It occured to me that I'm not Bob Crusoe when it comes to stagnant/unfinished/unstarted/unrealised Kat builds, I know there are several members who own examples of the best looking motorcycle ever made that have intentions of building them into actual rideable motorcycles so consider this a slap in the face with a gauntlet & a challenge to a duel to the death (maybe bit melodramatic there...)

So, now's the time to man the fuck up & pledge allegiance to the mighty Katana by prioritising your builds & getting stuck in, I'm proposing an ASF Katana build off over a 6 month period starting on April Fools Day, if you're interested in taking part there will be a huge cash prize*, a commemorative plaque & a flash Katana based trophy to the winner who would be decided by an ASF members only poll.

Build progress must be documented here with start & finish pics to be dated with a newspaper.

It doesn't matter whether your Kat just needs a freshen up** or a frame up rebuild or if it's standard spec, mildy modified or full custom, the ASF membership will decide which one they like the best.

In the interest of flushing out any Kat owners who may be a bit shy, I encourage everyone to name & shame anybody who doesn't confess to their dormant Katana ownership, I'll start the ball rolling...
Current Sinners list;
My good self
Large
El Hefty
Iceman (yes, Popups are allowed ;))
Kev Katana
Fimp
Robert N (Oldskool's mate)
Redmohawk
Your name here.

Who's up for it? Not only will you receive the above mentioned prizes, you will also end up with a larger penis & a Katana that you can ride, pull hot chicks with & stare lovingly at for hours, it's a win-win situation & you know it so get on board!

* well maybe not that huge

** you do have to do some substantial work or mods, otherwise it's not a 'build'

You're breaking my heart Mick  but Effies, TLs & Vals are not as dead cool as Katanas are they?

But yeah, we think alike mate, I work better with a deadline or a challenge, etc but at the end of the day I REALLY want a Kat to ride so I'll do it solo if I hafta, I just thought it was worth trying to get others motivated for a bit of fun.

I've had mine for 10 years and never got it built. mine is a GSX400S Japanese home market version, looks the same as the 1100 but suits my shortarse legs better. However the original Bandit400 derived motor was shite so that's gone, and in its place is a GSXR750M oilcooled motor that has Carrillo rods, a resleeved 750J block usng shortened B12 sleeves, bored to 81mm and fitted with 09' Busa pistons, and a 750DOT head, a 5 speed 1100M gearbox, and Slabby1100 clutch basket and lock up mated to the 750M back gear. I have a Garret T25 turbo for it, and a set of slabby 34mm Cv carbs, and a set of NOS ProMod solenoids and foggers.
Chassiswise it now has GSXR1000K5 forks, Harris adjustable yokes,1000K4 wheels, Brembo HPK radial calipers, Brembo 320mm race discs, Brembo CNC radial mastercylinders, Bandit1200 swingarm extended, and monoshocked. all stock Katana bodywork other than the K5 mudguard.

It currently sits as it has done for ages in an ever accumulating pile of parts waiting for me to have the time and funds to build it all up. Unfortunately I haven't had either lately, especially after getting the ZRX1000R built, but hopefully sometime before next season it will get finished.

Mate, I am sure I saw one in there with exposed frame, but to absolutely honest I am blown away these days with all the different frames, suspension, tank, tail etc choices that are out there for bikes and sometimes don't know what I'm looking at.

He was flat strap on the phone most of the time but when I had chance to have a yarn he was great to talk to and sure knew his stuff - spotted a couple of bends in my frame by eye that I couldn't see til he put a straight edge on.

OK, I finally got the majority of the bits I'm using sorted out.
Time permitting, I will be putting 2 Katanas together

The first one will be made from all this lot & will be used on Dragstrips, rides without too many corners, getting the groceries, keeping up with Deano & Latheboy & cruising/posing/pulling chicks around St. Kilda, Lygon St, Chapel St etc. Despite the long wheelbase it will handle & stop reasonably well because I don't want to hafta think too hard if I come to a bend.

http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h423/dmorcomb/TurboKat001.jpg
(http://s1109.photobucket.com/user/dmorcomb/library/)Specs;
'81 750 frame - shortened subframe, pillion bars removed, custom rearsets, some strategic bracing.
'83 1100 (black) engine - internally standard until I blow it up (shouldn't take long).
Hahn Racecraft draw through Rajay turbo kit :o
Mikuni HSR42 carb with Facet 3-4 psi pump
NOS nitrous kit :p
SRAD 750 USD forks & clamps
Spondon clipons
'01 ZX9 wheels - nickel plated
Braking 320mm Wave discs
Tokico 6 pots
5" extended Slingshot swingarm with shock tabs welded on
ZRX 1200 KYB piggyback shocks
Standard bodywork, instruments & screen
Other.

The second Kat will be for spirited twisty operation, it will have as much high spec suspension & braking technology as I can afford & will be built with weight reduction as a priority.
I bought this for a song (thanx to Stiffy for putting me onto it) it's a 7/11 & it already has some choice mods done by the previous owner who was a machinist of some sort - Slabby 18" wheels, swingarm & calipers, some nice frame bracing, late model fuel filler conversion, decent paint, etc so it's not gunna need anywhere near the amount of work that the TurboKat does.
It allegedly has a Wiseco 1166 kit in it but the motor has shat a main bearing (still runs OK but with a hellish death rumble only a roller bearing crank can produce) so it will be receiving a heart transplant with lots more power & torque as well as less weight. :D
http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h423/dmorcomb/712Kat001.jpg
Specs on this one will be;
'82 750 frame, braced like a motherfucker, shortened subframe
Ex Speeddemon Blandit Wiseco 1216 engine & carbs, dyno'd at 130 rwhp
ZRX 1200 toobular aloominum swinginarm
XJR Ohlins shocks
Slingshot 1100 USD forks with 1kg Racetech springs & Gold Valves
6061 billet triple clamps
Akront 17" X 3.5" F & 5.5" R rims
Kat front hub, Z1000 rear hub/disc
Buchanan Stainless spokes
Blackbird front discs
Tokico 6 pots

Suspension - sorted and modern radial etc
wheels - they be wire atm but 18's make it hard - would like to keep wire go wider for more modern grippier and better choice of tyres
engine - out and freshen shouldnt need much as its already a BBK with not many k's - better ignition and some flatslides i have in the cupboard renew the exhaust too

The pickups are all pritty much the same , the rotor is a little different for different makes. The rotor i have is off a 1100 suzuki so should fit , if it doesnt wont take much to make fit I'm sure, It bolts into advance mech. The pickups bolt to a Ali backing plate (not sure what its off originally) I had it on Kwaka 1100 running meth will prob screw to your donk easy enough.

Looks like I'm in now.

Or will be in a month or 3.

What time limit do we have Trubo?

I don't know if anyone else has dropped out, but I managed to locate yet another project bike.

Mine's going to be an '82 (might count as an '83 model) Katana 1000.

Planning to do a "stock" Katana with period mods- 33mm Smoothbores/ wire wheels/ McIntosh swingarm etc.

I'm still not sure if I'm in or out. I thought I was in, but the guy that who needed a couple of weeks to get cash together to buy one of my bikes, never got back to me and seeing as its been months now, I don't think he is really buying it. That leaves the katana fund pretty low....
