I'm in the same boat lads, zero income ATM so I'm reduced to doing little detail bits that don't cost anything.
I keep telling myself that as a Katana owner, I am actually very rich.

Latheboy is DXFing & organising the "La-ser" cutting of some bits for me now, when I get them I'll be flying.

So Richard, is it a done deal? Did the No's check out?

Kat 1 is all go.
Did most of my front & rear ZX6/ZX9 wheel/brake conversion last night, just some minor machining still to do to finish which I'll do tonight- Kawasaki parts on a Suzuki - all is right with the world :o
Club permit inspection done (thanx Pete) will get the plate nex week.
Oily engine conversion is under way but requires a few adjustments to the spacers which I'll sort out during the week.
Work is ongoing.

So I bought 2.5 new (old) Kats

This one is a 7/11

http://img9.uploadhouse.com/fileuploads/18265/18265055338da90e360ce42255613b081a6c12e7.jpg

Gonna stick the donk- after a few mods- into this frame-

http://img3.uploadhouse.com/fileuploads/18265/182650811e513cf4a02f2a9700e05d883ff716ca.jpg

Which the Kat purists prolly don't like cause it's been modded/braced and it fits in the vin number range for the Wire Wheel or Bathurst Kats.

Big bore kit, Keihin CRs, Wire wheels and a MacIntosh swinger is the plan.

The original design wasn't on a Suzuki,
It was done on a 750 MV Agusta.
The bike is still around and has been restored and is on display.

Looks a bit odd but you can see the evolution.

After visiting Casa Del Large on the weekend & ogling his Kat I've found inspiration to get off my fat, lazy arse & get stuck into my own Katana collection so that I actually have one that I can ride.

It occured to me that I'm not Bob Crusoe when it comes to stagnant/unfinished/unstarted/unrealised Kat builds, I know there are several members who own examples of the best looking motorcycle ever made that have intentions of building them into actual rideable motorcycles so consider this a slap in the face with a gauntlet & a challenge to a duel to the death (maybe bit melodramatic there...)

So, now's the time to man the fuck up & pledge allegiance to the mighty Katana by prioritising your builds & getting stuck in, I'm proposing an ASF Katana build off over a 6 month period starting on April Fools Day,

OK gumbo's. Looks to me that the dead line has been and gone and you all (most)forgot:rolleyes: to post up pics of you're finished Kat's.
So maybe as AFR 2014 is rapidly approaching you can use this as an amended date to post up pics of all your finished Kats. With an extra 6 months under your belt there's going to be some awesome examples to look at ;)

And here I am, still being fucked around on an 1170 kit, and having fucked a pair of liners pressing them out of my flogged out barrel so I could skim the bottom of the cylinder to fit a set of zx9 slugs I had lying around.
I seriously give up.

ozzy1100
17-06-2014, 10:04 AM
Big block work out only 300 or 400 more after you take into account
Machining. We use MTc ( and surply) you can order them already
honed to size. Heat becomes your prob when u get up around 1500cc
but only stand still in traffic really. There are some cool tricks to over come
this, I'm looking forward to trying them on mine and loging the results.
Nothing wrong with smaller cc's but love big lazy grunt :-)

GammaBoy
17-06-2014, 10:30 AM
Yeah. Having a perfect crank that's dead true, I can't justify pulling the crank apart to weld it to run big ccs (1170 is fine on a non welded crank, 1260 starts getting a bit iffy)... starts to become a very expensive exercise...

stiffsimon

On the kwaka's I don't need to weld the crank unless I split it of run big tyre
Tho lucky I made a crank jig to true cranks. Once you done a few it's not so bad.
I have seen cranks welded with out splitting if it is true.

GammaBoy
17-06-2014, 01:04 PM
You can't weld them properly without splitting them... and if the crank is true before you weld it, it sure as shit won't be afterwards.

Might be the Kawas don't make enough power to twist the cranks?

I've been really tempted by a couple of bikes on eGay recently. This one in particular-

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yamaha-RZ500-RD500-project-bike-Sydney-track-race-RD-RZ-LC-TZ-RG-47x-53g-/251830905406?ssPageName=ADME:B:WNA:AU:1653

Which might end up something like-

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/6d/2b/89/6d2b89366b991d454f30a69bc5d1b588.jpg

But then I think I've already got 11 bikes and lots of people in "developing nations" only have 1 bike between, maybe 11 people and I'm being greedy so I decided it's time to rationalise down to maybe 6. So I sold my 1400 and the gubmint wont let my rego my ZX12 so that's on the back burner for now.

Then I said to myself. "Large you should get a bike going that would be nice to do a few hunderd ks on and also be good to strap a sixpack of cleanskins on from Dan Murphy's"...like maybe a Katana.

So I checked my stock in the store room and found this handsome fucker that's been sitting for about 9-10 years.

Head's heavily ported, big valves, skimmed substantially, bored to 1170 (It was a stock bottom end running with aformentioned head/ 514B cams - had substantial mileage on it), cams are a VHR042 on the intake (.348/257* @ 050) and a Cam motion G3 on the exhaust (.345/256* @ 050) on brand new rockers, welded second gear and replaced a few others, high volume oil pump gears, modified pickup and removeable oil strainer, modified the cases for better breathing between the left side cylinders... RS36s, an old megacycle header and an oldskool Yosh can... I've already reworked the wiring a bit once for the Dyna rev limiter, can't be fucked wiring in a full dyna - also, trying to keep costs down (LOL!)

My set of slotted cam gears didn't quite let me put the timing on the exhaust cam where I wanted it - it's a little advanced (by about 2 or 3 degrees over what I want), but opening the exhaust early probably helps with the slightly restrictive can...

I've done a total of maybe 10km since bolting it together - and didn't get a clear run in traffic to be able to open it up - but feels like alot more mid range than before.
I also need to stuff around with the ignition bob weights to get more mech advance so i can retard the start timing to make it easier to light.

Have you checked the Ignitech ignition stuff.

Apparently they do away with the Dyna stuff.

Dyna s simply replaces the points unit under the cover and feeds the coils simple cheep easy and work really well
Ingntech do some really interesting stuff but I'll stick to a dyna cause I know they work (2000 or 4000 depending how I set up the 8 plug head)
Some great specks there Ben, you weren't temped for bigger cams :-) joe gets some really nice laser cut tappet cover spacers made up... I'll need them as I'll be 400 or more lift, Scott is running 420's at just over 110 dec from mem on 29 smooth bores
It's hard to go past rs's they really work well and are good to tune
Fuck this air cooled stuff is fun :-) and can out of hand way to easy lol

Gsx motors have electronic ignition from factory, there's none of this points bullshit. Mechanical advance curve though, EFs got full electronic though. Yeah, didn't want to go too spastic on the cam specs, got to be able to use the thing, it's not a drag bike.

Oh, and an Ignitech box is on the shopping list for the other bike after the VJ23 race kit CDI set fire to a capacitor...

500 lift is drag bike 400 is still street bike lol in all honesty they are not a bad choose
You thinking coil over plug with the ignitech ?

Nope, will just use the vj23 specific ignitech as a programmable replacement for the race kit CDI.

Picked this up a couple of weeks ago, 84 750 pop tart. Been sitting since 09 but scrubbed up ok. Don't know what to do with it yet, think I might just leave it as is and ride it. I know it's not the full blown 1100 katana but it still a kat isn't it.

Nah, need to get my lathe sorted before I get stuck into any of those shenanigans.
