View Full Version : Top 5 Streetfighter bike bases

Hey kids. I was thinking this morning while walking past all the bike shops downstairs that with all these new members joining up and asking the same question, we should have a Top 5 Best Streetfighter Base for each major manufacturer. You know, something like:

SUZUKI:
1.GSXR1100 - '86-'92
2.Bandit 1200 - '96 - '99 (or whatever)
etc etc....

HONDA:
900RR Fireblade '92 - '99 (or whatever it was)
etc etc.....

Listed 1 to 5 of popularity and best looking results. I was going to do all of them but then realised other people might have different opinions.

I know this topic could get messy with all the input but at the end there will be a definite top 5 for all brands which I will make a dedicated page to on the main website.

So, ....what do you reckon the top 5 for each are?

well, if you look at what has happened in the last year or so with bens, mine and frankies bike
plus a few other good ones overseas then i think that the TLR is rearing its fugly head on the suzuki front (maybe up at #5??)

and then there are the kats, the older oily gixxers and a couple of k2's getting around

Can you tell that Kats don't phase me in the slightest. They are shit loads better than a lot of bikes but still doesn't ring my bell. The engine was a corker but the looks were squashed frog, delorean-esk averageness. Give me the Z1 looks anyday over that. .....Bring on the barage.

Saying that though, I guess it should be on the list above GSX1400. I missed it off. I'll now edit my post.

i agree gix (in that it might not be to everyones taste), but it certainly is a popular fighter base yeah?

perhaps we should just fuck tradition and look at the cold hard facts
go through the "Your Ride" section and do a tally?

That blue Kat from Europe and a couple of others that have shown up recently on here are exceptions, but as a whole, spot the difference in the looks department:

http://uk.geocities.com/tradcarclub/images/ReliantRobin.JPG

http://www.preisvergleich.org/pimages/Suzuki-GSX1100S-Katana_203__59759_40.jpg

I don't know why you guys get such a hard on with these Kats, this looked shit loads better to me before they introduced all the plastic goodies:

http://www.suzukicycles.org/photos/GS/GS1000E/1979_GS1000E_red_480.jpg

But this is a hive of individual thinkers so I'm glad you feel so strongly. Shows a passion, so load up the shit gun.

Hey, that's not just a 3 wheeled car, that's a Reliant Robin, circa 82 also. (well, maybe not that model, but you get the idea).

Guy I bought my 1100 off ( 88 model, them black and gold things) used to go on about how the Kat he had before that had a spindly frame and after a while started to seperate, wheras the Gix frame (and those ones had the slabby frame) was as strong as.They certainly do not look as good as a Slingshot or later frame though.I was never a fan of that humpback tank (of the slabbie) in profile either.
Then again...I reckon the Bandit frame is a great looking thing.Slingshot in pipe sort of piece.

oily 1100 or 7/11's
RF900 (awesome base with teh arse cut off but bugger all around)
SLABBIE

GSX1400 as a base, but to be honest i havent seen many truly 'modified' ones (eg monoshock conversion or something else more just bits and performance tweaking). Reckon it would be a cool project.

As I only "do" Suzuki's.........

GSX 1100 Katana,
Oil Cooled GSXR1100,
Mk1 1200 Bandit,

Lots of other "also ran's" but for me those are the 3 that
were the main players. All old hat now, but all more significant
to streetfighers history than any Busa/TL/WC/1400/SV/etc and all
Classic Suzuki's (to narrow minded me ;)).

There is a danger that people will use tis thread as a guide, and decide that if they want to build a Suzki 'fighter is 'has' to be an '88 GSX-R 1100 (or whatever). Consequently, my list is as follows

2 GSX 1300R Hayabusa
3 GSX-R 600K4
4 GSX-R 600K4

Kawasaki
1 ZX 636
2 ZX-10R
3 ZRX1200S
4 ZX-7R
5 ER6

Yamaha
1 R6
2 R1 (2006-7)
3 R1 (earlier)
4 XJR1300
5 TDM900

Honda
1 2005+ CBR 1000

Ah, on second thoughts, with a bit of research I see what you mean:

Unfortunately I couldn't afford to keep it - shame as it had a heap of potential, I got the carbon bodywork sorted and had a paintjob and some lightweight bits and bobs in the pipeline, but I just didn't have the cash or space to keep it... They're much underated, but probably a bit expensive to buy new. I surprised a lot of people at the TT in 2006 with it...

it seemed a shame that you didnt ripp right into it, thats all

you should do more projects, what happened to that one you were doing up in so many hours or whatever?

Ah, yes,... ahem...
The Five Week Fighter got put on pause for the best part of a year, due to work commitments, but I'm getting back on it very soon, just as soon as I've done a few bits on my 900R and Slabbie. I'm also busy doing stuff to the other half's Bandit too, so you'll be seeing more project bike installments as things happen.
Will's Slabbie was put on hold when he started racing, and still on hold, and on hold for a bit longer now he's fucking off on his jollies!
