Gearing changes

I've elected to use a 48 tooth rear sprocket (standard is 45) on the Pallet Bike (R1).
This is an educated gamble because I haven't ridden the bike standard. The aim is to get the front wheel up easily in 2nd at a relatively slow speed, like around 60kph.

It's going to be a dedicated commuter slow a slower 1st gear would be good for lane splitting and I'll only do the odd tour on it, in which case I reckon there'd still be plenty of range in 6th gear.

Has anyone else done a drastic gear change and how has it worked out?

When I had bought my Hornt 600 it was a Japan import. Later I found that it had a smaller rear sprocket for long distance riding (all Jap imports do). I changed the gear ratio on my bike to a standard at the rear and reduced a tooth on the front sprocket (which basically is the same as adding 2 or 3 at the rear). This was my all-rounder bike. Used iteveryday. Never had any probs with it.

I had better acceleration but a lower top speed.

The R1 improves a bit with a few teeth on the back but it improves a lot with a lot of teeth.

The guys I know that get them going really good go down one on the front and up 4 on the back.

Sheet Stocky, 1 off the front and four on the back is a huge difference. Made me feel better about my choice. :D
From what I've learnt, most bikes are over-geared when they arrive here anyway to pass the drive-by decibel test.

52 rear and 15 front....my old yam only does 200 flatout, 120 k's to a tank of fuel.

Yeah but if I remember right Gaz, it takes off like a scalded cat...
What size fuel tank ya got ?

Ive gone 16/42 on my Busa thats 1 down on the front and 2 up on the back. Its a huge difference. Puts me hitting the limiter in 4th at the finish line over the 1/4 mile, i was hitting the limiter about 50m out in 3rd before the change. About 17% out on the speedo now till i get a speedo healer.

Actually Ozkat, that's my next question - what's out there to use to correct the speedo with a gearing change?

Here, use this gearing calculator I found somewhere, I think it was the old skool suzuki site, not sure now, its set up for a 5 speed gsx1100 transmission, just add the extra gear and ratios for your machine....
