Well I finally spoke to someone that knows their stuff at Qld Transport and it turns out that Yes, once a wrecker notifies them that they are dismantling a bike for spares the frame automatically becomes a stat write off.
This would mean trying to track down a non-reported frame which is not easy.
Ad to this the expense in tests and inspections I was looking at $1000 in fees alone.

Sooo me 'lil chums I have decided to go back in time and use an FJ frame ('84-92 model).

The subframe will be replaced with an ally one and the 'lateral frame concept' rails around the headstock removed as in the pic below. A mate in the UK had a frame built that hung the engine on the standard rubber mounts but had no lower rails and he had no probs so they will go in the bin too....they weigh a ton from memory.

I emailed this guy and he has had no problems at all. I will tidy it up as per the German loon on p077 of the latest issue of the bible (top left pic)

What I would like to do is heat/cut/bed tube A round to the headstock (C) and then remove tube B.
Obviously this would be a jig job and a decent welder (not me), but do you in the know think it would be possible ?
There are other rails to consider but this is just an idea.....

I dunno Russ, it seems like a lot of work, cost & downtime just to save a few KGs, could you modify the standard steel frame by cutting the lower rails off & welding a couple of tubes along beside the motor like a Harris/Spondon/Martek or this Kat?

I don't have to tell you that steel is a piece of piss to cut/bend/weld/etc, you could do the whole job in the garage & you'd end up with a trick setup & probly lose a kilo or 2 to boot, obviously not as much as a full ally frame but you're talking about a big, heavy oldskool aircooled engine so it's never gunna be a lightweight.
I cut 2.2 kg of steel off my GS 1000 frame recently, just misc. brackets, pillion peg hangers, etc, Are there any extraneous bits you could lose on the XJR frame to trim the weight a bit more?
I gotta say, I like the fact that your bike is an FJ/XJR hybrid, I've always thought that if you stick a motor in a chassis that it wasn't born with, then you've gone with the time honoured tradition of Hot Rodding which is the 4 wheeled equivalent of a STREETFIGHTER, if you use your donk in an FJ frame, even if it's heavily modified, it'll still just be a modified FJ.
Just putting it out there mate, that'll be 2 cents thanx.
P.S. if that pic above is an FJ frame, that's an ugly fucker.

I get what your saying Tk, but the fj/xjr motor is as good as the same (internals slightly different).
Soooo if I put an XJR1300 lump in an FJ frame would you still worship me ?:D
To trim the XJR frame I would have to lose the rear subframe but as it is part of the chassis and holds the shock mounts I would have to go mono shock as well. And then cut the down tubes off and weld on 'spondon' type rails....all getting a bit involved.
The idea was to just run the xjr as is (or as it is gonna be soon) and get the wife off my back 'can't you leave that bike alone...its never on the road'
In the meantime at my leisure I create another beastie in my spanky new workshop (after I build her 'fighter.)
The fj frame minus lower rails (and lots of tidying up) looks much better and with a decent back end, USD's etc...Trust me...I'm a Pom :D

I wouldn't be too keen to heat & bend them ally tubes though, you'll be seriously compromising their structural integrity.

You see how little frame would be left after I cut of the front loop and tidied it up...
And ignore the black bit at the back (left) its the centre stand.

The other trick I could do is to remove the back from the box section bit around the front and bend it in to the headstock and weld it up. This would mean I don't need a jig as I wouldn't be cutting anything out.

but i think you might get away with cutting off the fronts and using some 5mm or so plate to fill in the open sections at the front...

Scored a good frame today...not on any register so its good to go..(bike was sold to wrecker for spares)..for a whole $50 from a NSW wrecker. :D
If all goes well it will be winging its way to me soon.:D

Got the frame at home now...big thanks to Rexie's transport services ;).
Its not actually that heavy. I was considering the early FZR thou frame at first and they weigh 15kg without subframe.
The FJ weighs in at 18kg including the centre stand so once thats gone and the surplus around the headstock is gone it should be close.[^]

Just got this of the evilbay...auction ended with no bids so I offered him $1000 cash....Off to pick it up tomoro.
Not insurance registered...so no issues there..starts and runs good. Brand new tyres, new silencers...By the time I have sold off all the surplus stuff, the motor,carbs loom etc should cost me....Ooo, at least a couple of hundred bucks...:D

The frame is a french import and has been V-checked. Totally clear,nothing recorded so I will use the other frame as a prototype (hack it to bits with grinder [}:)])

Using the motor and electrics/loom and the ebay bike frame as it is a qld reg frame showing no write off history.
The $50 buck frame is nsw and going to be the dummy run.
