How do they work and are they affective at all, if fitted to non Vtwin bikes? Could i make one myself? is it a poor mans controlled RAM intake?

I'm assumin you mean the chrome crap things on Hardly Diddly's etc.
I was lookin at one on a jap cruiser the other day.All they seem to do is direct the air to the filter.
Bear in mind the filter is just stuck out the side of the engine so its getting huge turbulence. In this case anything that smooths out the flow would help.
The charger is just a posh air box with (i think)throttle controlled flaps.

If its the bug catcher lookin POS the butterfly in them (the old ones anyway) closed off the faster you rode. Look good but restrictive, I'm not sure if the newwer ones are cable operated now.

Nope, still vacume operated and not worth the money in my opinion. It's a goofy show piece. Some guys say they help, but look at what they are talking about. When you ride a 500lbs 50hp sled that breathes through a hole the size of a drinking straw. I'm sure a bug catcher helps tons.

For around $400, I can think of better performance upgrades, that really do make a difference.
