Hello Fighter Fans

I collected the Kawasaki of my nightmares a few months ago. Here's a quick pictorial of it's life since then.

This is what I had to start with:
http://imageshack.us/a/img834/7378/kawsf01.jpg

First day was spent making it look like this:
http://imageshack.us/a/img191/9829/kawsf03.jpg

Bought a $2 spray bottle from Kmart to make a coolant resi.
http://imageshack.us/a/img809/5944/kawsf07.jpg

Stripped the tank with the ambition of doing some fully sick paintwork.
http://imageshack.us/a/img213/4117/kawsf05.jpg

My awesome electric paint gun called in sick so I settled for some rattle can action.
http://imageshack.us/a/img689/4010/bluekwak01.jpg

I "fabricated" fork clamps and headlight brackets out of hardware store grade aluminium using only a hacksaw, a drill, and a file.
http://imageshack.us/a/img27/267/bluekwak05.jpg

Mounted a digital dash using a cut up bicycle headlight clamp and clipped in onto the bars between the risers.
http://imageshack.us/a/img12/634/bluekwak06.jpg

The view of impending freedom.
http://imageshack.us/a/img687/7328/bluekwak04.jpg

Drilled the airbox and ran the t piece from the carb vent hose in there. Turned a massive mid-range black hole into a slight mid-range flat spot.

So that mostly catches everyone up. I did also re fit the front mud guard and bundled up some excess wiring loom and tucked it behind the headlight.

Yesterday I took the seats to an upholsterer to get recovered. I'm picking them up tomorrow.

Today I took the tank and bodywork down to Revhead Pete's place for some new pearlescent blue skin. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Pete is awesome and I've got a massive case of shed envy.

In other news there's a brand new Viper can floating its way to my door from the UK. Scored it for the very reasonable price of $156 shipped! :D
Since buying it I've also found a wrecker with a full Yoshi system so once I see some pics I'll send my sister up in Brisbane to get it for me.

Also plan on polishing the frame since the previous owner touched up some of the original paint in a different shade of silver. Sore arms are quite likely to be in my near future...

Lastly I got myself a K&N filter cleaning kit because while I had the airbox off I found a very clogged red thing which is probably supposed to let clean air through.

you need to run the pipe in the airbox to the top side of the filter for best results mate i ended up drilling a hole in my filter and made it a tight fit so no dirt could get through

Thanks for the tip, Rod. I thought routing the vent hose into the airbox was only to equalise pressure between the airbox and the float bowls? I suppose a bit of filtration can't hurt.

Sore arms are quite likely to be in my near future.

Are they ever! I haven't even started on the frame yet, but I did have a PT session at the gym today - first one ever - and all I can say is "ow".

Noice, Another ol ZX Kwaka in Coffs, I may have a spare set of ZX7 forks if you are interested?

Just curious Rod when you mention running the carb vent tube to the top side of the Airbox, Did you mean it basically has to be in front of the filter (As cookymon has it currently shown in his pic) which would pressurise the bowls/fuel & force more fuel through the jets at high speed in theory?

In my thread (Below) you mentioned the same thing although I had the tube venting in between the filter & carbs which was wrong but it still ran fine for the time being, I have now run the vent tube to the front of the air box basically the same as cookymon & in front of the filter, Not sure where you mean to put the vent tube in front of the filter or? Say if we were not to put a hole in the filter? I think most guides recommend in front of the filter? Please explain

no mate that little pipe he has needs to be about 2 inches longer and it needs to go straight through the filter so its on the same side as the velocity stacks thats where you will get the best result

Thats not very nice Rod, I had the vent going to a grommet on the top right side of the airbox on mine originally (In between the filter & the carbs) & you said to run it up to the front of the air box & I thought you meant in front of the filter which some of the vent mod guides show in pics?
Much easier to run it into the holes in the air box that are already there I figured & it will still end up in the same spot without a hole in the filter whether it goes in front of the filter or behind

You saw me. I'm a scrawny runt. But soon I'll be a scrawny runt who can punch his way out of a paper bag.

Side panels - so shiny. Hopefully no big bastard bower bird tries to nick off with the bike, though he would pick up a bird for sure if he did.

Oldskool if you put the pussy under tension it'll only stretch. Pussy tightening would be more effective.

OH so the way I had it originally should be the go, In between the carb & filter?

A PT/pussy tickling session at the gym sounds much better

I'll try attaching a bit of hose to the end of the tee piece. There's still a bit of a flat spot, but then a wee baby 600 isn't going to have bulk grunt right through the rev range anyway. What the bike needs, and might get, is a rejet once I decide on an exhaust. Got a note from the post office for a parcel so hopefully it's my Viper can!

No worries I have read guides showing to run the vent tube different ways so I am still not sure? At least if the tube runs in between the filter & the carbs it is getting clean air, If you happen to run on some dusty roads with the vent tube before the filter it would go directly into the bowls, Not very nice for the rings etc, We dont all get to ride at 200k's around a track so running the vent tube at the front to get the forced in air wont really make any difference

Did you get the viper muffler Cooky?

I just found these forks while looking round on ebay, Thought they would be nice for your bike especially for the cheap price, Not sure about fitment though but it may be an easy conversion?>

^^^ I noticed that too. A fork swap would be great but this build is on a tight budget. Once I pay Pete for paint I'll be less than $3.5k in, and that includes everything: bike, rego, parts, consumables and paint. I'm not done, but I've spent almost as much money as I think the bike is worth.

yep sorry for the confusion mate

This is the other guide (below) I came across that explains it & basically sums up what I said
"Note: No matter how you connect it, connect the line where the clean air is, between the air filter and the carbs."

http://www.jonesisland.com/7r/motor/

There should be somewhere on most airbox's to run the hose in between the filter & carbys, My ZXR has a spot on the right side of the Airbox where the pollution crap was removed & I ran it into there

Did you get your tank etc back yet Cooky? Some pics of it all together & shiny blue would be nice to see

Yeah I got the tank, tail and fender back from Pete's on Tuesday but since then shit's hit the fan at work and I haven't had any garage time yet. If this rain pisses off tomorrow I'll get some pics in sunlight, which would also happen to be the first time for me to see the paint in full light too.

The weather was off & on today so im guessing you did not get some pics yet?

Did a little bit of work, but no pics.

Bought myself an orbital sander and got some 120, 400, 600, and 1200 grit sandpaper. The 120 is just for removing paint from the frame. Spent an hour doing that today and have at least two more hours to go on paint removal before I can move up to the 400 grit. I'll have another crack tomorrow and I promise a couple of pics regardless of the weather...

Where abouts on the coast are you, Ninja?

NINJAINOZ
02-02-2013, 10:18 PM
mmmm 120 is a little rough, Try not to put scratches into the aluminium that make way more work to get out as you are polishing, I usually start with 240 or MAYBE 180 to remove paint that way you are smoothing the surface as you go, 120 can leave some nasty scratches that will sometimes be near impossible to remove

Im very close to you Cooky, Probably near run into each other on a daily basis?

Yella
03-02-2013, 08:44 AM
Yep be very careful with the paint removeal to heavy early on can leave you with scratches or bucket loads of work best off to paint strip the area you want to do. If you are doing the rough cast area light 120 maybe ok but it is not fun took me a while to get it to a point It looked OK not that I was happy just that I could stop

Got everything back from Pete last week, painted up nice and shiny. Also got my shiny Viper can which I'll mount after I've finished fucking around with removing paint from the frame...

Apologies for poor picture quality. I'm still using the webcam on my tablet until I lay down some cash on a digital SLR.

Thanks Gix. By the time Coffs' next bike night rolls around I won't have the grottiest bike in attendance. There were well-used and unwashed adventure bikes that were cleaner than this Kwaka...

NINJAINOZ

Looking nice Cooky, As Gix mentioned a lot cleaner than the first pics, I have had to clean away a lot of grease & grime from my bike that the previous owner/s did not bother to do properly
That viper muffler is.........long! Is your bike still rego'd? (I can see a label but they dont issue them anymore do they?) You could shorten that muffler if it is rego'd still, Will look nicer though either way
What sort of dollars did the muffler cost?

What other plans do you have for it?

CookyMon
05-02-2013, 07:44 PM
Rego til September. Aside from the paint, long rego is this bike's best feature...

The can was $156 shipped from Brooks Barn in the UK. I'll ride for a bit before I think about shortening it. There's not much torque as it is.

Other plans... Umm well I just want to ride it once I finish cleaning it up. I've got another project in the garage which is what I have all the cool plans for, even if slab side GSXRs are bordering on being overdone... I'm thinking SSSA, German style tail, R1 front end swap with blue spot calipers, engine swap etc. But that's gotta wait til the credit card balance looks a little more healthy...
