I've read that the forks can be extended by modifying the internals...I only need and extra inch or so....anyone done it or have experience of it (not looking for 'google' answers...I can do that myself)

i dont know if this is the sort of thing your after Russ ,about 3 years ago a mate had an x track gsxr1100 89 model it had a heavier springs fitted and also had a billet piece of alloy machined up it was 2 inches in lenght fitted to the top of the spring ,i only noticed this as not standard when i was doing his fork seals,as i hadnt seen this in a slingy set of forks before

All that would be Pete is a pre-load spacer..... Adds pre-load to the spring, ie needs a bigger hit (for want of a better term) before they start to compress.

There is a local guy who runs a RMX front end on his harley with heavier springs.......

Good work Dave that is some cracking info and it looks to me to be compatible with most USD front ends.

Glad to help :-)
The important thing is to measure up and make sure that the forks can not top out when they are at full extension.
A mate of mine made up a set of 50mm fork extensions that screw into the top for the 05 zx6 forks I am using on my gpz900 project which is another way of lengthening forks to suit old skool bikes when fitting usd fork.
I would have used zed1015's way if I but I already have the extensions. The internal mods are are really tidy and not visible.

great info dave...
This is russ's baby but I'll be doing all the machining work but all at his final say , and happy to do so- then i get to play learn how it works and then to see if I make it work......thinking if I have probs with 70 to 80 mm drop on my zephyr
there are a few ways off geting around the problem but this looks like a very good way to get at least 25 mm and look stock parts or you cant tell they have been make longer.
cheers big ears stright to the pool room.....
