Cleaned up the grooves in the clutch, set the stack at 50.5mm, soaked the plates, reassembled and went out and abused the BUSA. Fun had by all :), got the Bus down to 10.2@143mph sit more in it once the clutch is sorted then its time to play with other go fast bits

Installing a clutch cushion.
While the clutch soaks
Question time, I am installing a clutch cushion in the bus and got some new springs and spacers with it so,
Clutch spring free length service limit is 23.7mm
Spring from the bus is 24.5mm dia 2.5mm
Spring from US is 27.9mm dia 2.3mm
... Both the Brocks and th new spacers are the same height,
So what spring do I run???????????????????
The longer spring is easier to compress but it will be compressed more once assembled in place so maybe heavier.
Redmohawk
14-04-2013, 01:39 PM
A shorter thicker spring with give considerably stronger "push" than a longer thiner spring for a similar distance. Think of a coil spring as a straight bit of wire the longer or thinner the easyer it is to deflect.
The travel distance isnt a big issue as both sets of springs are linear in rate . You can use a fish scale (weight) to dodgie up a spring weight scale with some cord a bolt washer and a block of wood in a vice with a hole in it. Put cord though hole in wood slip spring over cord then washer finally bolt tie off to bolt .
Then on other end of cord attach fish scale and pull to compress spring , a mate with a rule to measure compression distance is handy. Do same with other spring then you have weight difference at same compression for both springs .

Had a look the longer springs are from a later model bus decided to use the standard springs from the 99

So I have fitted the cushion, reset the stack height and heading out Wednesday for a test run. Then off to Summerland drags at Casino Sunday for some fun

The first run was enough to get in the final round but the tyre fitted after the 2nd run was no good so ended up doing 1/8 mile burn outs was still fun :). If it could get traction would have run 6.7 maybe a little less

Anything sub 7 is respectable. Well done.
The best I've seen here at Gunnedah was a ZX14, extended swing arm and air shifter, 6.4.
The best I could get out of the GSXR1000K5 was a 6.7 and I'm yet to get the busa under 7.2.

I am happy enough with the first 2 runs the first was soft away and limiter in 2nd and the second run was mainly on the back wheel surprised the fella on the BMW as I went past on 1 :). Was looking to run 6.7 on the weekend, may have sorted the chatter problem but it may have just been masked with the wheel spin as well will know more with new rubber going to run EC again soon to see what happens

29-04-2013, 08:57 PM
what did you end up doing to the clutch ?
Yella
29-04-2013, 09:07 PM
Last thing I did was swap out the back wheel and fit new crush drive rubbers I hadn't looked at it since I got the bike and it is the same wheel that pete had on his 99 originally so I dunno, the old fell out when I removed the wheel the the new I could hardly get the drive back in didn't chatter at all after that but as I said could have been masked by the wheel spin
Hey Ian. I ran a Test N Tune at Willowbank a couple of weeks ago on the ZXR. There was a guy racing a Busa who was having the same clutch chatter thingy you describe. One of the Old Skool racers advised him to launch at a lower rpm as the Busa has enough torque to pull out. First time he tried he droppped his time by 4/10's and did his PB.
Just a thought mate - might be worth a try.
Cheers

Spent some time in the shed looking at the clutch issue again today. When I pulled it down over half the stack was dry. I ran the bike with the clutch out and it pushes oil up past the clutch button into the basket but only a very small amount. After a good long look and a talk to the most trusted tool in the shed ( my grinder) I made some mods. I put 2 flat spots on the clutch pusher button to let more oil up into the clutch hub (hoping not to much). Then I drilled the basket, stock it has 14 3mmish holes to let oil out into the pack it now has 24 3.5mm holes. Sunday street meet tomorrow lets see what this does

AND it was like butter the first pass with a 10.2 and a softish launch. Good the second pass 10.1 with a little harder launch always knew it would be good for the first run or 2 and the clutch had a good soak but then down hill from there on as the clutch dried out. Ended up with me stalling on the line after it grabbed hard after the burn out and I tried to move away with very low RPM.

So I have a LCD100 and multi function hub coming my way now :). Will pick up a wide band 2 and a 2 dial progressive nitrous controller and I should have all the electronic bits out the way. forgot I need a timing retarder. Then I need to get bottles, brackets, solenoid, hose and Im good to go. I also want a heater and switch so I can keep the bottle at temp and maybe a pressure regulator to keep a constant pressure for the full run. So many things .
Once I have the wide band 2 I will swap out the pc3r for the pc3usb and start to tune the map so whne I get the rest of the bits its just a matter of upping the fuel and setting the % of throttle to activate and Im away,
Redmohawk
27-07-2013, 09:45 AM
You might want to look at a nitrogen push system instead of a heater and reg setup. It uses nitrogen bottle to maintail pressure on Nos contents , no need for heater and reg as nitrogen has a reg on it to maintain nos at pressure. If its a hot day just vent a little NOS off the bottle before the run and its at constant pressure for the run.
Means you get alot more pressure towards the end of the bottle (more important on bikes with small bottles) Is a relitivly easy DIY setup to. Basicly your feeding high pressure nitrogen vapor into the top of bottle to push Nos so constant pressure is maintained. Bottle heaters only work at the start of a run , as nos is depleted bottle temp plummets along with pressure. Messing with oxy/fuel mix at the top end of your run.
Yella
27-07-2013, 09:57 AM
yeh that's why I was looking at running reg on the outlet and pulling the feed pressure down to 750psi. So I can run bottle pressure at 900-1000 and the solenoid will see a stable 750 for the whole run. I can tune easy enough to the lower pressure with slightly larger NOS jet but it will keep the A/F close to perfect the complete run
Redmohawk
27-07-2013, 09:22 PM
You might find the Nos turns to gas in the reg and you end up with a NOS froff instead of just liquid (hard to meter) But good luck.
Yella
28-07-2013, 11:38 AM
Im hopping having the jet after the reg will offer enough restriction to stop it from happening. MAYBE?
Redmohawk
28-07-2013, 04:53 PM
Sorry to say I doubt it, reg works like a venturi when liquid flows through it. Even with the correct pressure on the outlet side to maintain Nos in a liquid state the venturi effect along with the pressure reduction will most likely cause bubbles of gas to form , making it harder to meter.
Vapor pressure of Nos is about 900 psi @ 20 deg c so regulating it below 900 will cause gas bubbles for sure. Pro systems even use large bore solenoids (expesive) to avoid bubbles on big 250hp and above systems, for the same reasons.
You want minimum flow restriction and no change in bore size including line and bottle valve to the solenoid, the regulator orifice as close to the solenoid as possable. After the reg pill you can run what you like to your injector as long as it can handle the pressure/temp etc. Even high pressure plastic air tubing works fine after the metering orifice.
Nos branded systems that have the orifices at the injector block tend to suffer from gas bubbles when the solenoid is longer than 6 inches from the orifices.
As you know plenty of systems are setup cheap and easy, but also plenty of systems give unreliable results. Your after a consistant dependable adjustable system, the Nitrogen system isnt overly complicated and works well. Does have the downfall of having a bottle on nitrogen on board but thats about the only issue (and is expensive if you buy off the shelf) . Keeps your pressure constant not only from run to run but the whole way down a pass. What you set it at is how it stays, irellivant of amount of gas in the system or metering size.

MMMM, I have some more reading to do
Redmohawk
28-07-2013, 07:55 PM
Also stay away from braided lines, the extra weight in the braided lines increases the amount of potential heat input to the Nitrous increasing its temp and decreasing the boil pressure. Lightest tube you can run that will handle the pressure is the go, I've used standard high pressure nylon air line for both sides in the past without failure (its rated to 2500 psi but only at 20 deg c , its lowest temp rating is -20 deg)
I'm making a Nos solenoid this week I'll post the photos up on Fb

30-07-2013, 07:03 AM
I picked up a complete clutch from Kev it looked the same as the old with the springs loose in the back so I wasn't convinced it would make a change but was going to chuck that in anyway to test. After the first test runs with the old basket I had a chance to pulled it down while it was hot found the clutch plates nice and wet ( SO I was happy) but noticed that the basket was jamming up not returning to centre when it cooled I was free again. Fitted the other basket and so far so good
Yella
07-08-2013, 09:10 PM
So went out to Gunnedah drags as always a great weekend. Made it out for 1 good pass before the clutch started to grab. The judder, chatter, hammering has stopped but the grab is still happening. Pulled it down at Stu's place on Saturday night and found the plate bone dry. Resoaked the plates changed the inner hub and put it back together and got one good pass Sunday morning ended up pouring 20-30ml of oil over the clutch after every pass and it was OK so DUNNO. back to the drawing board.
The racing, I couldn't get a quick pass all weekend best of 6.9 with most 7.1 or slower so I dialled in 7.05 and went racing and wouldn't you know it I ran a 6.6 during the 3rd round and broke out so that was the end of racing.

Just an idea,
Could you put a fitting somewhere into the clutch cover and run an external oil line from the main oil gallery to spray oil over the clucth basket while the motors running?
Your nearly there, keep it up.

Yep have been thinking of doing something along those lines similar to what I have done on the turbo bike. The only problem is I am trying to work out is why do I need to do that. Must be something I am missing

mmm.... had been thinking that as well. When you consider the amount of Busa's being flogged on drag strips around the world, and you dont here too many issues untill you start trying to flog them while making 350+bhp.
So, going back to the start then, where does the clutch normally get lubricated from, what affects that, whats been altered from stock that might affect it (whether that be clutch, oil lines, cooler or any other oil system componants). How does the motor sit compared to stock now that its lowered? Could this and the constant acceleration forces be starving pickup or forcing the bulk of the oil into places where it dosnt get thrwon back up around the basket? Sump baffles maybe
Dont know mate, could be a number of factors involved here, just got to keep trying to nut it out, or just throw and external line on and see if that helps.
I'm sure a clever man like yourself will sort it ;)
Yella
09-08-2013, 07:14 PM
First things first I will be checking oil pressure in the motor over the weekend just to be sure :)
I hear your pain. I took the Gixxer out to Willowbank for the first time last week. Couldnt get the thing off the line cleanly. Clutch just grabs and, no slip at all. Shutters and bucks around. Not even going to tell you my times, its embarrasing. Was talking to a guy who runs a K7. He said to take the clutch out and check the steels. If they are really smooth, roughen them up just by rubbing on concrete. Haven't tried it yet. Or other alternative was to put a Clutch Cushon in.
Yella. How much different are Busa clutches to a GSXR one? Mine does the same thing and I'll be doing this mod tonight - http://www.gixxer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140539 - As well as using this clutch plate you can drill extra holes in the back of the basket for more lubrication.
Once i've done this and tested it out i'll let you know how i went.
Cheers, Jed

That mod is suppose to solve your issue have heard good things about it sadly wont fit the Busa
Done last night. Pretty easy and cheap fix. Took it out for a run on the street for a quick test. No more grabbing / shuddering clutch. Made a huge difference. Still have to try it on the strip, but so far seems to have fixed the problem.
Cheap too. I was going to buy a Brocks clutch cushion, nearly $200. This cost me $23.

whats the go with the Kwaka disk ? Is it just a disk with some pits to increase oil retention or are they rivets holding something on the other side ?

Haven't seen one in the flesh but from what I can work out is 2 steels riveted together with a judder spring in the middle. seem to do wonders for the 1000 but just don't fit the busa :(

That's exactly what it is. I rode the bike to work this morning - 60k's to work on country roads - did a few test launches on the way. Unbelievable difference.
This is it. Should have taken a side on pic.
