A new bloke with some questions.

G'day again guys,
Just posted a hello on the forum.
Basically started looking at some ideas for a build.
I'd love some advice on where to start!
Friendly advice please.
I'd love to start a build from scratch really, but trying to figure out how to do that from a cheaper basis.
Been looking at a couple of different bikes weighing up quality and price, zx6r, zx9r or r6.
My thoughts go between buying a wrecked bike with an intact subframe and engine and build up from there.
But no idea of what I should be paying, and where to start reading for guidance.
I have been keeping a look out for cheap sales as well.

nah there's some alright kids around here.

Best thing to do is decide what sort of bike you want first and then plan/buy from there. With my last buy i wanted a 1000cc V-twin, and 2 aprilia wrecks happened to come up nearby. Had a read and they were said to be pretty reliable, which is something i need so i got em.

From the sounds of things you're after a 600cc inline 4?

I'm kinda at that medium where I would like a 1000cc, but dont particularily need one.
Looking for something that is relatively easy to work with, easy to find parts for.
So kinda a pro's and con's arguement.
What kind of cost do I expect for a straight frame and engine?
Roughly between the bikes stated above depending on availability etc.
Unless anyone wants to steer me in a different direction??

Well for a start, v twins are heaps cooler :-P

I personally wouldn't buy an engine and frame. You're much better off getting a complete bike if you can.

As XA mentioned it would be easier to start with a bike that is running nice & reliable & already rego'd would be a bonus but if you are on a tight budget & looking for something cheap atleast try & get a bike that is complete, The newer the better really, Or low K's is good too
I started off my first build with a bike that was 99.9% complete but needed a bit of work, I would have prefered something newer & something that had less K's & was looked after better but considering I did not have thousands to spend straight up (+ the bike was in my area) I am happy with it now after a bit of time cleaning it up>

the next prob with buying a motor in a frame is that it could be a stat-write off them you up shit creek.a lot of guys by em for bits then rip off unsuspecting buyers

Ninja - I did notice this bike on ebay, based in Vic so freight would kill haha.

Just starting the search really.

Hard not to be to impulsive.

Slowly been looking around.
Hoping to snatch up a cheapie and progress from there, already have a gs500 which I ride as I dont want big initial layout.
plan to be
Buy a cheapie bike,
Fix it up,
Love new fixed up bike,
Sell gs500..

Has anyone had personal experience with fixing up a repairable write off, buying an intact frame and engine and repairing, etc.
Looking like the cost is more than buying an old bike.
Would love to buy an older bike with the km's stacked on and switch out an engine etc.
