View Full Version : K & N FILTERS the myths and truths dating back to 1976
I my self have always been a bit of a skeptic and believed the term rock or gravel filter to br more accurate.
Since watching this video I am a convert.
This video is by the legend DAVID VIZARD which goes into detail about K&N FILTERS.
If you have the time you will learn a lot in this video, all engines are the same
CC vs RPM = HORSEPOWER

CBF watching 2 hrs worth & I've read Vizard's book anyway so give me the Readers Digest version, what does he have to say about K&N filters?
K and N filters do work but!!!!! if you have and airflow meter it kills the sensor as the oil pulls from the filter onto the airflow meter and after a short while it gets covered and goes the the shit bonza!!

Interesting stuff.
Most of it is very clever and over my dumb labourer head.
If your into this sort of thing, here's a bit more
from someone who's not sponsored by K&N.

"That said, both the cotton gauze type (K&N) and foam filters (Amsoil & Jackson Racing)
showed the same levels of filtration. Both performed poorly compared to the fiberous or
paper filters (Napa, Baldwin, and Mazda)"
I have no idea who's right, who's wrong,
but I do like to hear both sides.

From my research (armchair) into ZX14 air filters the K&N Air Filter does not filter as well as some other brands.
One of the key things I have read is that people with K&N Air Filters require less cleaning (longer periods between cleans) than people running BMC Filters, BMC being the main competitor within the ZX14 market.
Obviously it would appear that a filter doing a good job will require more cleaning than a filter doing an okay job.
On another note Brock Davidson (Brocks Performance) has said that the stock filters flow enough air, yet they still run BMC at the strip, but then again they're running BMC on a bike that is track dedicated and very highly maintained.
Just my opinion backed up by my armchair research.

dont care wat that says expeirence counts
every AND I MEEN every late model car or 4WD that has come in with an K and N air filter and has a AIRFLOW SENSOR either has to be cleaned to get correct readings and or replaced due to oil contamination on sensor, been in the trade since i was 15 and same goes for dual mass flywheels every workshop is changing over to single mass for the sake of money but it produces gearbox chatter but go to their website and they say the same as K AND N it does not happen!!! BULLSHIT!!!!

I'm not arguing with you ALBI I was just pointing out the fact that K&N spins a lot of BS.
For example http://www.knfilters.com/faq.htm#24 & https://www.google.com/search?q=KNFilters+%22There+is+much+misleading+inf ormation+on+the+web%22
Its all good mate ,neither am i .
When i get into something that i have an opinion about i go at it.
I call a spade a spade buddy .its all bonza my end mate,

Had a look & I'm far from convinced, the 'active filtration' he talks about doesn't seem possible if the filter medium is oiled like it's supposed to be.
What I'd be interested to know is if in a ram air type pressurised airbox situation like all our bikes have where you're not getting full suction-only airflow most of the time, would the effect of the active filtration be lessened or compromised if it's designed for car type airboxes with a constant vacuum/suction on the inside of the filter.
My biggest issue with them is as I mentioned in the other thread, a lot of K&N's panel type filters actually reduce not only the amount of filter area available but also the cross sectional area of the opening between either side of the filter... that's what restrictors do!

When I looked into changing filters on the Vfr, I found that while the K&N flowed more air, they made it smaller so it would technically flow the same as OEM so it wouldn't need remapping.
I bought a pipercross (run out special) cheap at mcas. Flows better and is full size so it actually does get more air.
