Gotta fit some risers and bars to my R1 (04) and wondered if the top triple clamp of an FZ1 would fit?
Anyone know if the FZ1 and R1 share the same offset and fork diameters etc? :D

Another bar question - do most people just drill some holes in their top triple for aftermarket motocross style bar clamps? Or are their better options without spending a fortune?

most people just drill them but it does weaken them a fair bit but the choice is yours mate

you can drill em and get someone to weld some plating in underneath if there is room - thats what I have done with mine and haven't hada problem

Where are you getting the top clamp from? It's a piece of piss to get it off and wouldn't take long so why not just take it off and line it up against the FZ one? You'll know then for sure. Unless anyone else has one here that they can compare for you?

Thnaks for the replies, guys. The original is cracked right through the headstem hole so I might do what Gix11 said and go to my local and line it up with an FZ1 and see.

I asked my local about the similarities between R1 and FZ1 and their eyes widened and they looked like bunnies frozen in a spot light. You know, that "are you a dickhead?!" look you get from ignoramouses who are afraid to mod or change anything unless some world-beater hero has done it before and raves about it and it's branded.

The stupid thing is that when I asked if FZ1 throttle and clutch cables would fit an R1 (longer cables on the FZ) they said, "yeh no problem. Same engine".

"Oh no you don't wanna change the triple clamps cause the geometries are bound to be different 'cause the FZ turns slower". I'm betting they've never heard of "rake".... [xx(]

Thanks again for the replies, fellas. :)

Dont be a wimp just drill some holes in it .. Just make sure that you can get a big washer on the under side .. Id be careful welding the top clamp , get someone whos a good/great welder to do it ... if it moves you'll be in trouble , but dont be scared heaps of guys here have welded their's ... Drilling is the easy way out.

The ABM's look sheet-hot but the price is a hurdle.
The wreckers are my best friends at the moment.

Careful, man - I never said or hinted that I was 'wimping' out of drilling. It was my 2nd option/post. :D

I've got to get a new triple regardless and if an FZ1 does the job, that's what I'll get before the drilling option.

Gday Bear if you go to page 12 of the your ride section you can see how I drilled a gsxr Tclamp,I am not suggesting this is the correct way but it has worked for me so far.

Hey Bear, had no trouble with drilling my bars mate, I did however make a top brace and two shaped ones for the underside to fit the casting, although you said yours was cracked so no go there.
Good luck.

Nice job and not a bad way of getting some colour into the bike ie. one could anodize the plate.

+1 for not welding the risers on.
I have a set of triples on my K1 that the previous owner welded up and the whole thing is warped out of shape so i have to do a complete new one.

But instead of using a big fat washer underneath, I got a boily mate to make a steel plate that fits in the underside of the triple clamp. This gives me the option to drill and tap, weld or do whatever I want to it. Should work okay, i'll post up when its done.
